A couple trips to service.

Posted by 911dark, Aug 30, 2006 - 10:02 AM

Had to rush the car into service this morning for a failed ignition switch. I'm too busy at work to DIY so looks like a $500 service.

I also had to have the water pump replaced due to leaking water a couple months ago. That was in the $1200 range.

All in all I still can't complain as I have no idea how well the car had been cared for previously. Mileage is up to 73K now and I enjoy the car every time I drive it.

Wow, you got ripped for sure. I've had both of those problems. the ignition switch is usually just the plastic back piece, 30 40 bucks and an hours labor. My water pump was about half your 1200. I use an indy though and not a dealer

you are right ,he did get ripped off, the switch is a very common problem with all 996 & boxters.it has the same part number for volkswagon ,audi & porsche deppending where you purchase the part ,you could pay from ($35.00 v.w) up to $145.00 from a porsche dealer.it's very easy to replace, only a ten minute job.as far as the water pump you can find one on e-bay for around $125.00 o.e.m ,and you could install it your self .that's what i did .

I thought my ignition switch failed (which i replaced) after i killed two original Porsche batteries but it turned out to be my CDR220 which kept on drawing 100 milliamps when parked. I removed my stereo and sent it to Borsch to get repaired, they wanted $600 AU to repair, so i got one on Ebay $150 US, the face plate was a bit rough but i just used my original instead. So always trouble shoot first man.
