Limited Slip Differential

Recommended Posts

:drive:

Last Sunday we drove the car for the first time with the LSD and what a ride!

It was the last PCA-LPR autoX of the season with 47 drivers with around 35 cars. The results have not been posted yet but we may have run 2nd and 3rd over all with a ultra light full race 914 in first place. I can tell you there were some 911's working very hard to beat the Monster Boxster. But the real credit goes to the Quaife torque biasing differential, we accelerated faster and corner much faster.

You can view Quaife's web site:

http://www.quaifeamerica.com/

Three parts were purchased from Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix: 1. Quaife Torque Biasing Differential, 2. Side Cover, 3. Bearing. Total with shipping $1,827.51.

This is the best single mod that I have done in terms of performance improvement.

Did Tim Benson help you with that?

The tech session at his shop and wine tasting was last October.  How about if you hit on Tim for a repeat this October.

Tim was in-between helpers so I pull out the transaxel and Tim installed the differential and I put it back in the car after he also replaced the rear main seal. Sure learned allot working with him.

The important point about the RMS replacement is that the engine had 3,500 miles since being installed. This a 3.4L 996 E-gas motor new from Porsche.

Will talk to Tim next week.

Larry

Jinster,

I don't know, might be a good idea to call Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix 602-244-0911. On Monday I will check with Tim Benson, Fastlane Porsche Repair and get back with his answer.

Good luck,

Larry

Jinster,

Tim doesn't know best if you call Patrick Motorsports.

Good luck,

Opening up and old thread.

As the trans / dif on the Boxster and 996 are basically the same, I figure this is a good starting point for a discussion regarding my question.

Assuming a removed differential (from my 996), how difficult of a DIY is it to install the QUAIFE LSD? What's involved (apart from buying the right parts) and are there any special (expensive) tools needed in the process?

Check out this month's issue of Excellence. They install an LSD into a 944. The particulars will obviously be different because its a different car, but the article is a good place to get an general overview of the process.

If vaguely recall reading that factory LSD was either a 996 option, or available on the GT3's version of the same transmission. The parts catalog should show it.
