  1. I am busy installing a NAV TV iPod adapter to my 07 3.4S Boxster 987 PCM 2.1 system and I need to find a switched power source for the bluetooth adapter that I have coupled to it. I thought the power out from the wiring bridge connector (used at the back of the PCM 2.1 unit) that came with the NAV TV system would provide a switched power connection however I realise now that the power on/off signal comes from the MOST fibre connection while power to the loom stays on. Does anyone know where the best place is to take a switched power tap from? Many thanks
  2. I have attached a document that Hartech have put together on the bore scoring problem and the research they have done into it. I can honestly say that their work is outstanding having toured their workshops and seen how they repaired my engine. Hartech Engine Guide (interim).pdf
  3. No, a 3.4. The 3.2s have a lower capacity, produce less heat and therefore don't exceed the tolerances like the 3.4s do. The 3.2 has Lokasil liners and the 911 GT3s, turbos and racing engines use Nikasil which has a much higher tolerance to heat. Unfortunately when Porsche made the 3.4 engine they changed several aspects of the cooling and together with the increased heat from the extra 200cc managed to exceed tolerances under specific conditions. When this happens you end up with scored bores, excessive oil consumption and loss of power. I know a number of people who had their low milage 3.4 boxster and cayman engines replaced under warrantee. Have a look at Hartech web site https://www.hartech.org/ - there's lots of information about the problem there and how to resolve it. One newer option is to use Miller 10W50 Nano Drive oil (obtainable from OPIE Oils). The nano particles act like small ball bearings in the oil and increase the point at which friction breakdown occurs under stress. I now run my 987 on this oil even through the new Nikasil liners will have addressed the problem. If you google 'Porsche bore scoring' you will find a lot of info on the problem.
  4. The 987 is a nicer looking car IMO - I had a 2003 3.2S before and although the later 03/04 986's had the clear headlights, glove box, etc I always preferred the style and interior of the 987. This said, if you can only afford a 986 then find one that has been driven and serviced regularly. Annual oil changes instead of the mandatory 2 yearly are much better for the car. I fitted an IMS guardian to mine which is also something you could consider to give you early warning of an IMS failure
  5. I would go for a 3.4 987-1 for the reasons quoted above however be aware that some of them suffer from heat seizure - a situation that can occur suddenly under specific conditions ie a fast take off after idling or when the engine is cold (they don't full understand the combination of events that causes it). What this results in is damage to bank 2 and an engine rebuild. Ideally therefore you should try to find one that has already had an engine rebuild - assuming of course that the rebuild has been done correctly. I am familiar with the options available having just had my engine rebuilt after the previous owner cut corners and used steel liners. I opted for all 6 cylinder to be bored out and re-sleeved with Nikasil liners - a pricey option but it makes the engine bullet proof. Let me know if you need more info.
  6. I have just read several posts on this site about retrofitting a cruise control system to a Boxster 987 with great interest. My 07 Boxster S has all the extras except cruise control which I would really like to add. Until now I had thought this would be a huge job involving additional parts to the engine etc. I see however that in fact it only needs the hand controls added which is really quite amazing. Unfortunately the posts are from around 2007 so I am not sure whether these parts are still available. Has anyone done this mod recently and if so what were you experiences in terms of acquiring the necessary components? Many thanks
  7. I can't find anything on the site on how to remove a glove box on a Boxster 987 - only a 997 (not sure if they are the same?). I need to run my ipod cable from from the trunk into the glove box and want to take the glove box out to route the wires. Can anyone give me advice on how to do this? Many thanks
  8. I am trying to locate a manual (preferably PDF) for the PCM 2.1 system in my 2007 987.1 Boxster. I have found an older version of the manual for the PCM 2.0 system (80 pages) as well as several topics that point to the RennTech document section however the manual doesn't appear to be there anymore. I have even looked on ebay to no avail. Can anyone help me with a copy or a suggestion on where I can obtain / buy a copy?
  9. I have an 07 987 Boxster with PCM 2.1 system and Tooki BlueTooth adapter installed? Does anyone know if you can add an iPod connector to this?
  10. I have a Tooki BT adapter connected to mine - Bose system with PCM 2.1. Seems to work OK.
