Squeaking Brakes While Not Being Applied...

Recommended Posts

I noticed while driving with the windows down a squeaking sound coming from the car next to me. It sounded like the old POS that it looked like. Then, he was gone and the sound was still there. It was my car!

Basically, it's an intermittent squeak varying with my speed. When I put some pressure on the brakes it goes away and then returns when my foot comes off the brakes.

What's the fix for this? It's just annoying. I'm assuming my brakes are slightly rubbing? Any help? Thanks!

PCCB

Well, there are 3 kinds of PCCB brakes and some squeal more than others.

Here is how Porsche rates them for "drivability".

Sport Driving/"Standard Pad" (street and sporty use):

Properties: Good all-round properties, even for sporty driving. Good fading stability, e.g.

when travelling along mountain passes. Suitable for racing circuits; however at very high operating temperatures there is greater wear on the pads compared with the racing pads.

Identification: All pad side areas are yellow, white stripe on the pad side area of the retaining pin bores.

996 351 948 01 Front Axle Brake Pad set (= 4 pads)

996 352 948 90 Rear Axle Brake Padll set (= 4 pads)

Brake Pad For Comfortable Driving (only for street use):

Properties: These brake pads should only be retrofitted on customer request. Less chance of brake noise. Only suitable for normal street use. All pad side areas are black.

996 351 947 01 Front Axle Brake Pad/1 set (= 4 pads)

996 352 947 01 Rear Axle Brake Pad/1 set (= 4 pads)

Brake Pad For Racing Use (only for racing or racing circuits):

Properties: These pads can only be retrofitted (at the racing circuit). Not for street use. Reduced wear on the pad at high operating temperatures. All pad side areas are light green.

996 351 940 92 Front Axle Brake Pad 1 ea (Sold each, not as set)

996 352 930 90 Rear Axle Brake Pad 1 ea (Sold each, not as set)

I think Scott from H-town has regular brakes though...mine also have a similar squeal when in reverse...not audible unless windows are down and radio off...(I have brembos though not stock so dont know if same reasoning applies...no clue)

Hi there - as I have a 2001 Turbo the stock pads part numbers are:

996 351 949 12 & 996 352 949 02, is there an upgrade from stock other than the ceramic's?  Thank you!

No those are still the pads used today on new (non-ceramic) TTs. No other factory options except ceramic.

Also, the Ceramic part numbers above have changed with a newer TSB (in the TSB section).

Loren:  10 years later, and I read about "sport" pads (genuine, buy from the dealer) in other forums but, I've never seen the part numbers mentioned and its not clear whether they are talking about the PCCBs or not.  So, is there now a sport pad for the non-PCCB brake setup and, if so, part numbers please.  (PET is not very helpful)

Thanks,

Mike
