burning rubber smell

Recommended Posts

Whenever I park my 2006 Boxster S after a drive, I notice a slight burning rubber type of smell emanating from the rear wheelwells. Has anyone else noticed this or have any ideas what may be causing it?

Thank you,

Tman

Do you get this after every drive or just after a spirited drive?

One explanation I heard, and it makes sense to me, is don't forget the hot exhaust is right behind the rear wheels. When you drive, you kick-up all kinds of crap that will hit the hot exhaust and possibly make a stink. After a spirited drive, where do you think those tiny-tiny pieces of tire wear go? On your hot exhaust...right! Maybe this is where the buring rubber smell comes from.

Thanks for the tip...never considered 'road dust' could be the culprit. I guess I need to get underneath the car and get an idea where things are located :P

T man: Further to the burnt rubber smell, I believe it to be the smell of nice warm clutch plates. When you turn off the engine after a good run down the road, the hot engine and transmission vent up through the rear wheel wells. There is only one place for the hot smells to come up when the engine is turned off. I've come to believe this is a normal Boxster smell, and it is far nicer than any 911. Regards, Metron

Your vibration is likely an exhaust heat shield. Have a look and see if any are bent and too close to something else.

I experienced the same smell (after a "hot" ride as I´d call it) - in the german PFF forum a user eported that the rubber fit of its stabalizer have been hurt by the heat. He discovered this as he also experience a "plong" sound while driving...

Just a hint.
