wind noise or door adjustment

Recommended Posts

A relatively quick search on wind noise didn't pull up anything specific to the cayenne.

I am having some wind noise coming from the top corner near the B pillar from the passenger side window. I have checked all of the rubber sealing and there doesn't appear to be any issue with it being malformed, etc and when it is windy and/or cold outside it becomes very noticeable and extremely annoying on the highway.

However, when the door is closed it appears the seal hangs ever so slightly over the lip of the door frame as opposed to sitting flush or just inside as the other doors. Its as if the door just needs to close an additional 1/8 of an inch or so.

So my question is, can the door be adjusted to close tighter? Or does this indicate a different issue?

As always, thanks for any and all suggestions. Other than duct tape.

Short story: Can the doors be adjusted to close "tighter"?

thanks Loren. Ironically one of the solutions is to buy butyl or duct tape, but I think the problem is the low hanging door.

Are TSBs typically honored after warranty?

How hard would it be to add a washer to the lower hinge?

Hi. Did you ever resolve this issue? My drivers door has the same problem; it hangs a little low when it's closed and at highway speeds, the wind gets under the seal and causes a lot of noise. It seems that the hinge needs adjusting, or shimming with a washer.

Mine has been this way for over a year. I fixed the wind noise by taking some thick electrical tape and building up a new surface for the door seal to seat on. You can't see the tape when the door is closed, and don't notice it when the door is open. It gives the seal a positive surface to seat against, and stops all the wind noise. With that said, I don't want my car held together with tape, and I don't like the way the door lines up. Any advice would be appreciated.

I had been living with the same issue on my 05CS for a while, the door was a "little" low and at speed or in crosswind (from the pass to the drvr side) the gap would slightly open... I showed it to the dealer tech and they put in a shim kit on the door which leveled the door and completely fixed the issue.jump.gif

Has anyone else experienced and fixed this themselves? I want to attempt this myself, but saying dealer fixed it does not provide enough direction for my simple brain. If anyone can chime in with some procedure that gives tips, eats, so I don't mess up the door position entirely, it will be great.

Doors have shims already but driver from door is about 3mm lower and on highway sometimes I hear noise.

The adjustment is easy to do yourself.  First buy the shim kit, or buy some stainless steel washers to use as shims.  The inner diameter of the washer needs to be large enough for the door bolt to fit through.  Read the TSB posted on this site re:door alignment.

Essentially you want to do two things.  Begin by shimming the bottom hinge of the door, so that the latch end of the door raises up until level with the window sill.  That's step one.  Step two is to adjust the bottom hinge outward.  You want to push the bottom/front of door away from the parking foot brake lever (9 o'clock position for the drivers side door).  (Or 3 o'clock for the passenger side door)  Doing this will close the gap at the top corner of the window furthest from the hinge.  Essentially pulling the door tighter at the top.

It can be a bit tricky to figure out how much to move the door when the hinge bolt is loose, some trial and error may be needed.  But it will solve your problem.

The only other trick is that the direction you want to adjust the door(in step two) changes with the door open (the door must be open to loosen and tighten the bolts).

I fought this noise for a while and had relied on shimming alone to fix it.  It wasn't until I discovered that the door hinge can be moved along the x-axis that my wind noise was fixed.

I can try and post some pictures later on for clarity.

Hi Jagman1,

Thanks for your description that resolved your problem with door alignment.  When you have a moment please post some pics...

The front passenger door's bottom trailing edge is about 1/2 an inch further out than the right rear doors leading edge on my 2005 CS.  Everything seems to be aligned... as in up/down, left/right.  When I push in the bottom of the door, somehow it seems the seals are to bulky now and pushes the door bottom out.  One significant note though, I took the door apart to change the bowden cable from the interior door latch to the door lock.  Everything seems to line up during reassembly.  The door closes fine with the exception of the bottom corner of the door jutting out about 1/2 inch.   I am suspecting I did not properly reinstall a seal that goes all the way around the door, on the door.  I've checked it twice though and the seal seems to match the "good" drivers side... I am baffled at the moment.

Thanks in advance.
