2004CTT - Air suspension warning - OBD code 1772?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2004 CTT with about 65K miles, so far been pretty bullet proof. I just started getting a warning light on my dash that things are amiss with the air suspension. The warning light goes on about 30% and it happens about 10/15 minutes into a trip. I cannot fell any difference in the car when driving. When I turn the car off/on, the warning light goes out.

I pugged in my Durametric last night and got a code 1772. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and if so is it something that I can fix myself or does it require me to take it to a pro to fix.

Thanks in advance - Steve

Fault code 1772 -- Pressure sensor signal wire

Possible cause of fault

- Short circuit to B+ in the wiring of pin 84 of the level control module

- Short circuit to ground in the wiring of pin 84 of the level control module

- Open circuit in the wiring of pin 84 of the level control module

- Level control module receives implausible signal from pressure sensor

- Pressure sensor faulty

- Level control module faulty

I would reset it and see if it comes back. If so inspect the wiring.

Hi Loren,

I have the same error code 1772 on a Cayenne over here.

I have checked the wiring, which involves testing pin 34 of Connector A of the Control Unit, and pin 84 of Connector B, and the connector to the Valve Block/Solenoid for the following; Short to Ground, and Continuity.

Incidentally, the previous code was 1400, and we could not even enter the control module to calibrate nor control the Fill/Bleed functions, so we changed the contorol module and can now code/calibrate it, but the last code we are facing now is the 1772.

Hence, I am deducing that the Pressure sensor is faulty, since the wiring is ok.

Now my question is, is the Pressure sensor in the Valve Block/Solenoid or the Compressor? From what I have gathered, it is in the Valve Block/Solenoid, which means I have to change this. However, if it is in the Compressor, then I would need to change the Compressor instead. Both are pretty pricey, so it is important to get the right one.

Any guidance?

Item 3 is the presssure sensor...

Hi Loren,

Thanks for the quick response!

I forgot to add though, that the Cayenne here with the same code is not a Turbo, but instead a Cayenne 3.6 Tip MY2007.

Is the part you showed the same for this car as well?

I don't think so - your car (2007 and newer) has PDCC. So you have two blocks

I think we're referring to Level (Height) Control instead of PDCC anti-roll system?

I had similar problem before on my 04CTT no signal from the pressure sensor(dealer could not find the part number for the pressure sensor). ordered this one and put it in. everything works now.

http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Touareg_1--V6/Suspension/View_All/ES289283/

for 10 bucks, worth tryhing.

btw when I got mine, it includes

not sure its a packing mistake.

i think basically it is just a leaky compressor problem.

You guys have jinxed me with this talk. '06 Turbo S with air suspension fault warning today. The weather is cooler than when driven last week and comes on a minute or two after start up. If I shut it down and restart it goes away and almost always doesn't come back until a restart after sitting for some time. I checked and it is the 1772 code, and since it was so cheap I started by ordering the $9.55 pump repair kit so I'll see if it is the same, or at least part of it. How can a part for a Cayenne, or Toureg for that matter be so cheap? Especially from ECS!!! If it doesn't fix it I'll try that pressure sensor. I did clear the code while I was in there so we'll see since I will probably drive it once or twice more before I do any work on it.

P.S. Once the code comes up while driving, the car seems normal except the ride height will not change when selected.

Does anyone have instructions for dismantling the air compress to install the update kit? I purchased the kit from ecs tuning but there was no manual. I know where the compressor is and how expose it but I'm stuck where it comes to dismantle it.

Please help, I have been searching the Internet but only find complete compressor replacement or lacking instructions on the job

PM me, Lordjvaun. I got the instructions from Hahnmgh63 and can forward them to you. I want to add my experience with a '04 CTT that spent some winters in the great white north: The two original bolts broke off; apparently corroded. Well one broke about 1/16 inch from the housing. The other one stripped so I drilled the bolt head off and eased it out with lots of convincing. The one that broke off didn't have enough material to clamp onto so I sawed it off and tried drilling with the smallest bit I had. It broke off (probably because I'm German and used too much force) inside the bolt. So I tried a carbide bit and it walked off and ruined the threads. So now I know why Porsche replaces the entire assembly instead of rebuilding.

My advice would be to go ahead and drill off the bolt heads before twisting on them. Also, does anyone know if it is bad to remove the vehicle off the jack with the compressor out of the car? I live in one of THOSE neighborhoods where Code Enforcement is happy to ticket you if they see your car up on jacks for more than one day.

Tim in Ft Worth waiting for parts to arrive

Hello guys!

"slaskowski" please man can you tell us how it went with your problem? how did you solve it?

I'm really curious cos I have the same isshue and it drives me crazy!

Until now i've changed the valve bloque (level control module) but nothing, still the same error code... same faulty message.

"Loren" I've also verified the pins. connections, they ware good.

I've monitorized the compressor while it's working and the temperature is fluctuating quickly (when it's working it stays around 200 degrees Celsius, and after that it drops at about 30 -15 degrees). - just to inform you...

Also I've bought and changed the compressor repairing kit! - it went quite, no faults for a while, then it appeared again.

Thank you!

Best regards!

It's fairly easy if you can turn a wrench, change the oil, change the spark plugs. First you have to remove the plastic underbody cover on the right side and it is just about under the frt right seat. I would just lower the assembly and do it in place next time. I removed everything did it. I had the OEM VW kit which has went up dramatically in price but since your in the UK, check Ebay store Bagpipingandy I bought a kit from him for my girlfriends Audi A8 (virtually the same compressor as the Cayenne) and it was perfect. Fixed the compressor problems on her car too (2005 A8, uses same brand of Air Suspension and compressor).

Thanks for the reply I've ordered the kit,do I need to raise the vehicle or do anything before I go ahead it looks very easy to do.Also if it is successful will the warning light go off or will it need to be plugged in to clear the warning light.

You will need to just go to Normal height and disable the Air Suspension per the manual. If I remember right you just push the height adjustment forward for at least 5 seconds until the Instrument cluster display shows it disabled. Do it the same thing again to enable it. You may need Durametric or a Porsche specific code reader to clear the codes and depending on the codes locked it may need the suspension calibration procedure. Either way you will be saving yourself a lot of money rebuilding the compressor seals yourself.

Thanks for the very speedy reply my local garage will be doing the compressor fix,its a long story the cayenne is under warranty but the dealer is being a right t##t with me over it and he's 250 miles away with this kit and the labour charge to fit it and other diagnostic charges and a new mot test its approx £340.00 I've paid out I can see me taking him to the small claims court I no its not a lot of money but it's the principle Once again thankyou very much for the advice pity the dealer wasn't as helpful as you and hopefully this will sort it.

Regards Chris

Hi

I have also got the 1772 error on my 2004.

Bought the rebuild kit for compressor, fitted OK. But compressor was corroded a lot inside, and the drier-unit on compressor was wet inside. Compressor cylinder/parts was OK. Dismantled the whole unit, dried all parts, and assembled again.

Still 1772 error.

Another symptom is that it takes a lot of time to raise the car. Maybe 1-2 minutes from one level to a higher level. Compressor is working all the time during this process and I can hear it working. NOT silent.

iCarsoft i960 shows about 220 degrees celcius in compressor when working. Can't hear any air-leaks after car is shut off (too much engine noise when car is on).

What do you think guys? Faulty compressor?

Thanks.

Hahnmgh63 had the same problem I've had: air compressor would run-on and I would have to stop and re-start the car several times to get it to shut off. I did the widely-recommended compressor piston ring replacement (which I've also had to do on a Touareg) but that did not solve the problem this time. The compressor continued to run-on and got the the point where it would not shut off at all, no matter how many times I re-started and stopped the engine. I finally had to park it in my shop and pull the 40-amp fuse under the driver's seat to avoid killing the battery. Now what? Replace the pressure sensor? (2006 Cayenne Turbo S)

Broken relay? It's mandatory to replace relay when you replace the compressor, probably because it's a known fault. Relay is above foot-pedals, a bit difficult to find the correct one.

I had a problem and my compressor run very often, at least once a minute. No leaks. Found the problem after a lot of work investigating this: A broken pressure release valve on one air spring. This caused one corner of car to be lower than the rest and compressor run often to try to raise the corner. Not possible when valve was broken. Fixed the valve with heat and problem solved.
