Electrical Guru's required Instrument Cluster

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone. I'm looking in getting the wiring diagram for an 04 911T convertible Gauge cluster. I did visit Porsche's PIWIS TSI web site but info is not there. Only search result that came back was from the WM (workshop manual) section an appendix which list pages 1-30 with no possible link to any of them. I'm looking in identifying which signals are tied to the three colored connectors.(Blue,Grey and Green).

I'm experiencing problem with Fuel,Temp and Pressure indication(Both Red light are on for the Temp and Gas eventough needle indicate 100 Degree F and fuel empty, I know that fuel indication can be wrong if less then 1/4 gas tank, which is the case, read several posts about this issue). Where I'm concern is the fact that the OBD tell me that I have a deffective Fuel sender and needs to be serviced at a Porsche Dealer, not that fuel level is low. I also get an "add windshield washer fluid" warning eventought it's full. OBD keeps cycling between these two error code constantly and I can't clear them by pressing OK. I can't access any other feature of OBD. I also lost illumination of all 6 switches around the radio, and to top it all off, I can no longer operate the convertible top. It is now open and I can't close it. (Good news is that it's in a garage!)

What brought me there is that I had to disconnect the cluster in order to install a BT microphone for the AVIC Z120BT radio. I did reconnect the 3 color coded connector back in place and double checked them without any luck. I do have wiring diagram for a 996 Carrera model 99/00 and according to it most of my symptoms are related to the Plug 1 (Blue) except for the convertible top control which mentions Plug 2 (White). This diagram mentions Plug color Black,White and Blue, I have Blue,Grey and Green. Can anyone tell me if I can rely on this diagram or not?. Any suggestion would also be greatly appreciated

Firstly I would do 2 things.

1. Check all the fuses, you might have blown one.

2. Disconnect the battery and leave for 10 minutes, reconnect and see if the fault has cleared. Just about all the dash instruments and alarms are controlled directly by the DME talking to the dash in computer speak and not the old fashioned analogue signal. perhaps the dME has to find the data link again.

Just a stab in the dark but it cant do any harm. Make sure you have your radio code.

Thanks, I will do that and see what happends. I should see the result when I get back home, I forgot to mention that the battery also died on me after an hour or so playing with audio adjustment after radio and after market amp where installed. I've used the battery quite a lot (this car was modded to have running lights on during daytime) so Headlight where ON for quite a while and drainned the battery). I've hooked the Trickle charger before leaving for a business trip 2 days ago. Hopefully everything will be OK when I get back!.

Thanks for your input

Hi guys, fixed the issue over the weekend!. I did verify all fuses, none of them were blown. I had to connect and disconnect the 3 colored connectors several time and finally everything came back OK. All error codes went away. Probably a loose connection.

Thanks all for your help.

That is good news! I pulled my cluster and tried to change the gauge faces. Followed instructions to a T and still messed up 2 of the gauges pulling needles... after the speedo shop BCM'ed it, I got to spend 3600 bucks on the factory aluminum-look cluster. Not something I'll ever mess with again.

Dredging up an old related thread...

I disconnected and reconnected my '02 turbo cluster several times today trying to get it to work.  At this point warning lights and central warning LED work, but no turn signal indicators or bright light indicator.  The central warning is cycling between all fluid levels with errors.  Wonder which connector is responsible for turn signal, bright indicator and gauges?

Is there some reset one has to go through when disconnecting the battery and reconnecting the cluster??

And now for something completely different:  When I removed the cluster, to my surprise the row of lights along the bottom have two cabriolet warning lights. No spoiler error lights as shown in the manual picture; item N. Could my cluster have been replaced by a prior owner? Could it be a Boxster cluster??? The vintage of the cluster matches the age of the car. But, there were no turbo Cabs in '02. I believe I have all the records for the car - need to go back and see if there was ever a cluster issue, as all work was done by a dealer. Could Porsche have run short on clusters the day my car was coming down the line, so Uwe ran over to the the Boxster parts bin for a cluster!!?? What a cluster today has been...
