Hello all - I am new to the forum and to Porsche ownership. Found my car at the local Porsche dealership during a lunch break from work and fell in love with a test drive. Car has been absolutely a joy to own the past 6 months, but, on this past Saturday after a drive into town, it restarted and after about 15 - 20 seconds died. It will continue to do that as many times as you want to start it. After searching around, I found the best information on this forum so I decided to join. From reading other posts, sounds like my primary fuel pump (drivers side?) is at fault most likely. I believe I have the experience to do this job myself, I have done a number of fuel pumps before (but the thought of tearing my Porsche apart scares me a litte). My main question is this - In your expert opinion, is this the right course of direction in replacing the pump and second, can you use VW Touareg fuel pumps? In researching, the look the same but come at a cheaper cost locally than the Porsche equilivant. Does anyone out there know if I can use the VW part for the 2004 V8 Touareg? Any assistance would be very helpful.

Before you start throwing parts at your issue you need to prove the fuel pump is bad. Do you have access to a scanner? preferably a duramtrec to see what codes you may have. You will also need a fuel pressure gauge to see if your up to spec. You need to prove if its fuel or ignition system/electrical related issue before you just throw a $450.00 fuel pump at it.

Thanks Binger. I have already scanned and get low fuel pressure errors. Validated with pressure dropping at the fuel rail as it dies. Hard to do on your own since the car does not run long when you start it. From what I can tell, the drivers side fuel pump is bad. I have not tried to do the 'remove #14 fuse' trick that was on the forum under another string. When you first start it, it runs just fine then sputters and dies at about 20 seconds or so when cold, then a little sooner when warm. My biggest question is if I can use the VW fuel pump in the car, are they the same? From what they look like they are the same but can't find any documenation anywhere.

HI Brian,

I only use OEM parts on driveability related issues! I dont know how many miles you have on your Cayenne I would always replace pumps in pairs. If one pump is bad the second is not far behind. Its your call if you want to do the research and cross reference that part and then roll the dice. HTH

I've got about 111,000 miles on the car right now, so it seems about the time fuel pumps tend to go. So, to sum it up, both pumps and the filter appears to be separate too even though it is part of the housing. Recommend OEM. I am still going to try to see if the VW parts are the same. The fuel diagram for the VW Touareg, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne are identical, so it stands to reason that the pumps would be the same, but will have to do more research. OEM is Bosch I think?

Thanks for the input!

Brian

Thanks for the referral. I have send them a request for cost on the OEM Porsche parts. I am still a little nervous about doing the job by myself even though I have done Fuel Pumps before. Does anyone know of a video step-by-step of how this is done out there anywhere?
