wow - quick repsonse , many thanks ! Sorry, it was a 1985 911 Carrera. My research on the VIN shows it was imported from the states (i am in Australia), but it appears to be not the original motor - but I am a novice ! I understand from my research that the last four numbers of the VIN should match the last four of the engine number. The VIN is WP0AB0917FS121230 so it looks like the motor is from a very similar model, but not the original one. Would that be correct?

thanks again

No that shows it is a 1985 car with a 1985 engine.

Only Porsche repair records (or certificate of authenticity) for this car could tell if it is the original engine serial number.

thanks Loren - appreciated. I just looked at the last four digits of the VIN and engine number and saw they were different so assumed that meant that it was not the original motor. Everywhere I read, it seems to stress how 'valuable' it is to have maching numbers

I have a 1965 Porsche 911 that was imported into the US. I bought it in 1987 and meant to restore it but didn't get it finished. I need to know about the engine. It was switched out before I bought the car.

Serial # 6310236

My title states that the VIN is 302902. Title Number: 8730725503

Under "specific comments" it says: 6125 65 B

Thanks,

Rod

"302000>" serial number would indicate a 901/01 coupe series car likely built in 1965..

The old engine codes jump around a lot -- so your engine case would appear to be a "631" engine from 1971 911S.

Also you could easily build a 911 normal or T into an S engine with just a few changes - so further investigation would be needed to see what the engine size and HP really is.

Your original engine would have been a serial number "900001>"

Please help. This is my first post.

Can anyone tell me which site I can go to to decode my vin number. The site on the above previously posted answer looks like it breaks down all of the options. Does anyone know which site that came from.

Welcome! :welcome:

I am not aware of another site that can do this for you, but we do decode VIN numbers here for contributing member's, so it's a great time to become one!

I have a similar question about an engine number. I cannot locate the engine number on my 1995 993. I see in the manual that it is supposed to be stamped on the right side of the crankcase next to the fan housing but I see nothing.

A little worried as I want to make sure the engine is original and actually has a number. If possible, does anyone have a photo or a video to help me locate it??

Thanks, Shawn
