Folding Side View Mirror Malfunction

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a 2004 Porsche Cayenne S and the Drivers Side folding mirror function stopped working...

The passenger is working fine albeit there is a delay when I set it back to the normal extended position.

The Driver side mirror in question feels a bit loose and not solid in extended position like to passenger working side.

I had my Cayenne recently serviced and I suspect that it was possibly broken during that time...

Does anyone have any idea or DIY for fixing the auto folding mirrors?

I spoke to the dealership but its basically my word vs their word at this time.

Any help and/assistance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Andrew

I have exactly the same problem... I did a lot of research last year and the only solution I could find was to buy a new mirror base 955 731 221 00 (be careful with that code there are a couple of dozen different varieties and I don't know the Porsche parts system well enough to know which one is correct)

This base was close on $250 if I remember correctly so I decided to wait until one came up at a breakers!

I saw the Pelican DIY on the mirror.. They touched on the folding motor but did not go into much detail on the folding portion, just mirror adjustment

Does anyone have an exploded view so I can see how this is all put toghether?

The interesting part of this is the mirror housing itself is no longer "solid" / "stable"  It now has some play and looseness to the whole housing..  Will a broken motor make the housing loose and not stable?

It was also suggested to clean and/or replace the mirror adjustment knob/controller unit but not sure if that will resolve.

i have the same "looseness" as well.... almost like you can move the whole mirror housing in directions it's not supposed to bre able to go.

Cleaning the switch will not fix that.

I believe (in my case) what happened is that the mirrors were not folded in for a decade, allowing loads of sand to build up inside the mechanism, when I tried to fold them, something (plastic teeth maybe) snapped, allowing the thing to fail.

As I noted previously, I'm going to just replace the whole unit and see what happens.

Old thread, but not a lot of info on the web about this.  My 981 right folding mirror quit. $437 for a 'mirror base w/ power fold'. Part # 99173121910.  I got lucky and found a used one on Ebay for $170.  However, It was such a pain to replace that I'm starting to wish I went new... because I don't want to repeat the process again! 😉   Took me almost 2 hours to do. I could probably to the next one in 30min. A lot of prying on flimsy plastic tabs to get the mirror cover off of the metal mirror base.
