Alpine 920 Change Splash Screen to Porsche Logo

Recommended Posts

I've recently upgraded my PCM 2.1 for an Alpine W920R (UK version.....I seem to think its an S920HD in the states) in my 2005 Cayenne S.  Whilst I was at it I also fitted a backing camera which is built into one of the number plate lights.  I ended up buying the camera through eBay from Australia as all the others that claimed to be for a Cayenne gave the wrong dimensions.  The picture quality is fantastic and not bad at night.  The down side is its slightly off centre, but not a huge issue as I mainly wanted it to show the tow bar when I hook up to my caravan.  I bought an adaptor to link into the Fibre Optic system which seems to work ok.  I'm going slightly off topic here, but the one thing I do find annoying with it is the speed it starts up.  When I first put the key in the ignition it starts up quick enough, when I turn the key to bring up all the warning lights, but not start the car its fine.....but when I start the car it switch's off and takes forever (up to a minute) to start up again.  It seems to be the power surge of starting the car or the unit is very sensitive to voltage drop/change.  If anyone could help me on this it would much appreciated.

Right.....back to the actual topic.  I wanted to change the splash screen or welcome screen, whatever you want to call it to show the Porsche Logo like the PCM did.  I surfed round the net and nobody had an answer for how to change it with a 920 unit.  It turns out its the same method as the bigger touch screen units, but instead of pressing the volume down button you simply turn the volume knob down.

So as not to lay claim to this method or be responsible for locking up your unit if it goes wrong please if you try this its at your own risk and nothing to do with me!  Also, to avoid copyright on the Porsche Logo and other posts on the topic you'll need to surf the net and search "Change Alpine Splash Screen".  You will find posts on this topic which may/should include the image file you need.  Once you have saved it to your pc do the following;

1)  Save the image as apn_pa_opening.bmp (it wants to be a 24 bit bitmap 800x480) onto a blank USB memory stick which is formatted to FAT32.

2)  Turn your unit on and plug in the USB stick.

3)  Switch to Radio and full screen (not split screen) and hold the band soft button down for 2-5 secs.

4)  Release the band button and press the Navi/Audio Split screen soft button.  (Just press it once and release)

5)  Press the phone hard button on the left.  (Again press and release)

6)  Turn the volume knob down (anti clock wise) a little bit and it should come up the message "Please Wait".  After 10 secs or so it should reboot the unit with the Porsche Logo.

I have a 2055 CS and want to install a back up camera.  Like you said, a bunch of the ones on sale on ebay doesn't exactly fit the license plate light cutout.  Can you tell me which one you purchased?  Thanks for the info.

I am going to take a look at the Alpine W920R.  Want to change the PCM also... thanks.

Hi,

I've put a link below of the one I bought.  Worked out to cost about £45 which is a lot compared to some of the backing cameras you can buy, but like I said the picture quality is really good and it replaces the number plate light perfectly.  It has a built in LED light which is brighter than the standard one so now I'm replacing the number plate light on the other side with an LED one to match, but again the sizes are all smaller than the one that's in there.  I can't understand why they are advertised as Cayenne when the size is wrong.  The other good thing with this camera is it comes with just the right cable length and it has a power cable built into it so you can power up the backup camera direct from the reverse live cable in the head unit.  Otherwise you'd have to run a wire from the backing light which looks to be a real fiddle.

The W920 is a nice unit and doesn't look out of place in the car.....was a tight fit getting it in though,  I cut off all the extra cables I didn't need (mainly speaker cables as I was using the Fibre Optic) and then by pulling the glove box out tucked the Fibre Optic Adaptor and the Steering Can Bus Adaptor to one side....and it was still a neat fit!!  Again if you search the forums and Youtube there's plenty of info out there and tips to help you.
