Can't remove key after shifting into park.

Recommended Posts

I'm working on a 2009 Cayenne V-6. When shifting to park, message on dash displays "Move selector lever to position P" and key can't be removed. After cycling ignition, key can then be removed. I've seen posts about this concern but no clear solutions. Any have any information about this?

On this forum, no. On the Touareg forum someone suggested the battery was at fault. I know the battery was not healthy because it would go low quickly. After charging it would start the car so I did not suggest replacing it at the time. The customer picked up the car before I got the information about the battery being the probable cause and they have not returned to address the issue, but that is what I'm going to suggest to them.

I know its two years ago but I have the same issue with the key. Its stuck in the ignition and it says to put the lever in P. Its already in P. I know how to release the key. I also replaced the ignition switch but the problem stays. @Rodolfo Müllerhow did you solved this problem? I have a 987.1 Cayman 2008 2.7

himbinboe, have you checked your battery voltage? If you review the 3rd post above you will find that the battery was a likely fault. Low voltage can cause weird problems. On  my car a slightly undervolt battery caused my Tiptronic to go into limp mode while driving.

I seem to recall reading that there's a small button on the left side of the ignition switch (9 o'clock).

When that is depressed with a paperclip, for example, the key can be extracted.

I'm not familiar with the Cayenne, but it may be worthwhile looking to see if you have this button.

Yeah the battery is holding its charge and for I know there hasn't been any work done on the transmission. Not lately I mean. I replaced the part with number 997.618.159.03 with exact the same one but I bought this on Ebay. It is a used part. So there is a possibility that this part has the same issue. Now I have contacted Porsche for a new part. This one has part number 997.618.159.07. I think i'm going order it new. I hope that is going to work.

Check you battery health and also the shift selector. I had the same issue and after replacing my battery discovered it was the shift selector going bad.

The circuit board underneath had cracked and the magnets attached were being misaligned causing a miscommunication with the dash, key and Kessy module
