I need to replace the chain tensioner and the engine needs to be at overlapping TDC.

The manual shows how to do this with a special tool, but I don't have that.

My question is, how can I tell which TDC I'm on, the ignition or overlapping?

Is this an interference engine or would the valves be open on the overlapping TDC? If so, I could try some air pressure to see if the valves are open?

As per the workshop manual reference:

Take all the spark plugs out except for #3.

Insert the ignition rod module back in cylinder 1 hole.

Rotate crankshaft pulley until igniter rod module pops out of its hole.

Continue to rotate crankshaft until the fixing bore hole on the crankshaft belt pulley is aligned with the bore in the the timing case cover. You now have ignition TDC.

Rotate an additional 360 degrees to get overlapping TDC.

You can easily make a tool yourself. If you feel the back of the camshafts you will feel 2 grooves. Just cut a iron that blocks both camshafts of one bank e voila. You need to put the timing cover first then you set the timing. Don't forget to torque the chain tensioner and don"t bend the pins on the back of the camshaft.
