Part number for 996TT Car Level Sender

Recommended Posts

My understanding of the oil measurement was that the timer in the instrument cluster (time since last start) senses how much delay before attempting to read the oil level (the sensor is in the oil tank on TT/GT2/GT3). The car being level is up to the operator. The only level sensing units on the car that I am aware of are for the Litronics/Bi-Xenon headlights. (Except for the cabs where there is rollover sensing). If you know differently please enlighten me...

I have a TT cluster in my 986. I have tried everything to get an oil reading

The menu says 4 criteria must be met.

1. Verhicle is running

2. Vehicle is heated up

3. Vehicle is stopped

4. Vehicle is level.

I have met all 4 conditions but I think nothing is telling the cluster that the vehicle is level so it won't display the oil reading.

I have let the car idle for 10 minutes with the same result: "Vehicle must be level before measurement is taken"

From what I believe Jeff said is that the TTs have some sort of level sensor other than the one for the litronics (which I do have)

Ahh... I think I get it now. I should have remembered what you are doing.

I think the issue is the oil level sender - mismatch.

The TT has a different oil level sender than the Boxster and Carrera. The Boxster and Carrera read the oil level out of the engine sump and the TT/GT2/GT3 read it out of the oil tank.

Hmm... I wonder if their is a different impedance in the TT sensor. Jeff - if you read this perhaps you can ask Peter about this... in the meantime I'll try and do some research.

There is always the dip stick. Only Peter would be able to figure this out - if there is a fix and there just may not be due to the software in the cluster.

The turbo cluster will not let you check the oil level with the gauge unless it receives a signal or something that the car is level. I asked local turbo owner Alex if he has ever seen the 'not level' message, and he has. A few weeks ago Peter said it should have nothing to do with the level sensors on the suspension for litronics.

The oil pressure sender part number I gave you, that bolts to the cam cover, is the same for a turbo and 996. No way is that thing going to determine if the car is level.

In the instrument cluster wiring diagram I do not see a wire to a turbo cluster for 'car level.' There is a oil level transmitter in the turbo oil tank like Loren said. I wish there was a way to figure out if this part has 2 functions. Looking at all the wiring daigrams is like looking at Chinese to me. I wish there was a way to disable the car level thing with the PST2.

Someone is going to have to compare the turbo and Boxster/996 wiring diagrams to determine what sensor in a turbo determines if the car is level when doing an oil level check. My pure guess is it is the transmitter in the tank. If I had the part it my hands it would easy to see if it can also sense the angle of the car.

Thanks for the help. Where can I obtain the schematics for the two different models?

The sender could be on any part of the car not even near the engine. It may ground a terminal on the cluster if the car is level (which would be ideal)

All somewhat educated guess on how it 'could' work.
