  1. Try this.... http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9559
  2. 2003 C2 cab, 50,500 miles. RMS replaced at 45k and about to go in for tappets under warranty. Otherwise, only real problem is stone chips!
  3. Thanks Orient. The people I bought the kit from didn't know the correct PN, nor did their supplier, so this should help!
  4. Replacing the Sim card tray in a PCM2 So, if you've got a sim card tray in a PCM 2 unit which either stays in or stays out, you'll need a new sim card tray. You can order a new one by contacting Becker direct and asking for your local becker parts reseller. In the UK, its around £20 plus VAT. In terms of fitting, you'll need a set of torx head drivers, numbers 8 and 6. You'll also need a 5mm hex head allen key. You don't need to disconnect the battery, but its probably adviseable. Remember on UK (and probably all European cars Author t1m Category Carrera (996) - Common Fixes and Repairs Submitted 06/02/2006 01:11 PM
  5. So, if you've got a sim card tray in a PCM 2 unit which either stays in or stays out, you'll need a new sim card tray. Remember on UK (and probably all European cars) leave the key in the ignition turned on before you disconnect your battery, else your neighbours will be as unhappy as mine with the secondary siren going off! 1 - Remove the horseshoe facia. There are other posts on this, but it is a push fit. I got mine off by pullinig gently the inside of the facia from each side of the air vents. 2 - With the allen key, rotate the 4 screws (2 either side) of the PCM unit, which will push in some arms which stop the unit coming out. 3 - Pull out the unit and disconnect the connections on the back. 4- Unscrew the two torx head screws on the of the unit. The top half then pulls off from teh front first. Be gentle with this, as it holds the CD player and there is a wired connection between the top and the bottom parts. You'll need ot pull off the connector. 5 - Unscrew the two screws on either side of the case holding the bottom to the front casting. The front then pulls off with some teasing but again, be careful as you'll need to disconnect wire connectors. 6 - Once the front is a stand along piece, unscrew the torx head bolts all around the outside and you now need to get the front off of the casting. This is a little tricky, but the best way is to insert (gently!) a chisel inbetween the plastic casing and the casting around the push on slots to push the plastic up enough to pass over the casting, then use a flat blade screw driver inserted and twisted into the slot in the side to push off the front. You'll need to do this side by side. 7 - Lift off the casing and thread the wires out (you'll need to thread them back through the casing when you refit it) 8 - Lift off the LCD screen and the metal side springs and disconnect the wire connector. By now, you can see the sim card holder. 9 - Pull off the volume know (its a push fit) and lift up the circuit board, and the rubber button moldings. 10 - Unplug the sim card holder (if you havn't already) and unscrew the 4 screws (number 6 torx) holding the sim card tray in. 11 - Put the new tray in and reverse all the above. Don't forget to take a note of where all connections were, and reconnect all wires on the way back.
  6. Here's a drawing of the two parts (attached). I've got the one on the bottom. From the pictures posted on renntech and the like (and thanks - yours too!) the actual part looks like the one at the top.
  7. I've got the wrong vacuum holder in my PSE kit but it hasn't got a part number in the TSB. Any one know the right part number for the holder? Its the bracket which fits over the positive terminal in the engine bay and has an angle on it taking it at 45 degrees up from a mounting point to over the terminal, then horizontally over the top where the relay is mounted on it. Thanks, Tim
  8. I'll post pics tonight. Contact : Advanced Electronics & Logistics Ltd., High Street, Princess End, Tipton, West Midlands DY4 9HG Tel.: 121-5226652, Fax: 121-5201352 E-mail: ayub.kola@@qualtronyc.co.uk. They might take a bit of time to come back, but they're pretty good. I was going to order another to keep a spare. I had a similar good will offer form Porsche to pick up 75% of the cost of a new PCM unit. Considering I'd just bought the car, I thought this was suspiciously generous of them! Perhaps they've had a lot of complaints... oh, and 4 hours labour to refit a new PCM2 unit means it was a pretty dumb mechanic. It really is a 10 min swap out job, then 30 mins on the PST2 unit to reprogramme.
  9. Just thought I'd post the solution to this for all those who have the problem. Contact becker through their web site and ask for your local becker part reseller. In the UK, its a company called AEL. Order a new "sim card holder for the Porsche / Becker PCM2". Its around £20 plus VAT delivered. The PCM unit can be dismantled fairly easily with around 10 screws getting to the front of the unit. I'll post pics for taking the unit apart when I've got them onto the PC. The sim card holder just swaps out with the new one, and voila! - working sim card holder again. The reason the tray breaks is that there is a small piece of plastic which fits in a guide and moves a lever everytime you push the tray in and out. This snaps off, leaving the tray staying in or out. A new PCM 2 unit from Porsche is around 900 plus fitting, so this is a cheap repair! Tim
  10. I'm about to start the installation of a PSE. Step 1 - disconnect the battery. However, when I do, the siren goes off.... Tried the alarm fuse - the siren goes off. I can't randomly try anything else or else the neighbours will lynch me. Any ideas? Tim
  11. Thanks Loren, So is the last number (01) just the year of manufacture, and no difference in performance / noise? I've only saved a small amount over buying direct from Porsche, so want to have the latest model. Cheers, Tim
  12. Hi, I've just recieved a PSE kit from a part co in the UK for a 2003 996 model cab. The exhausts are numbered 996.111.984/985.01, but I see the latest model ends .03. They look like the 03 model (per the pics on Carnewal) so looks like the right one for a 3.6 l car, but is there any difference between the models? Cheers, Tim
  13. I've got a 2003 cab and the roof can be raised and lowered up to 30 mph (its a european model). Porsche made a change from 2003 onwards to have this operation - 02 cars havn't got it. Not sure if this is different for US models, but it may be the dealer has put an old roof controller in.
  14. Hi all, Does anyone know whether if I do a straight swap from one PCM2 unit (broken) to another PCM 2 unit whether I will need to take it to Porsche OPC to get a PST unit to reprogramme the car? Cheers, Tim
  15. Hi Anyone got any instructions on how to remove the rear bumper on a 996 03 model? Cheers, Tim
