Thanks for the response. The steam is coming from the right rear wheel well. When I replaced the coolant reservoir (OEM $400+ !!!), I replaced all of the coolant hoses as well as the transmission coolant valve. There are no obvious leaks and oil is clean. No loss of power. 02 986 S. Replaced coolant reservoir due to age and stripped threads 6 months ago. Loosing coolant at about a quart every 200 miles. No puddles noticed, car will occasionally heat up and discharge steam. Have bled the cooling system, however I am not certain that I have it completely bled. Puzzled!

Thanks...As it turns out, it is the control valve for cooling the Tiptronic transmission. Evidently, this has been an issue and there is an upgraded part. The problem is getting to it. One post suggests lowering the transmission an inch or two, the other is to remove the passenger side rear axle and some other pieces...or, you could get someone with small hands 🤡 to go through the wheelwell and attack it there. So, after removing everything I dared, I looked at it from the top of the engine compartment. A few skinned knuckles and 30 minutes later, done. Actually, all that I found necessary was to raise the right rear wheel, open the engine compartment and have a friend look through the wheel area while I worked from the top. This is not an uncommon problem. I had to replace solenoid on both front and back trunks within a month of each other on my '03 Boxster S. Not a difficult task, once you find the "secret" unlock cables. If, with either trunk open, you cannot hear an audible click and a corresponding movement of the mechanism, then the mechanism needs to be replaced. The front trunk mechanism moved occasionally, but I sufficiently for opening. The rear simply stopped working abruptly. I live in Portland, Oregon, so I just go to Sunset. When removing the old one on the front, you will need to peel off some foam stuff (don't tear it too badly, you will want to use it on the new piece. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I replaced the tank vent valve on my '02 Boxter S with similar symptoms. Had the same issue. I found a small cylinder with an electronic lead on it. I discovered (hours of research and install/reinstall of the valve) that this thing is a magnetic sensor that fits in a slot on the tank vent valve. When you look, it will be obvious. The sensor pops off when you remove the valve. Don't slap your head too hard! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
