  1. Last year my PCM would cut out, then restart itself about a minute after I started the car. After that it was OK. As the summer months rolled by the cut out/restarts became more numerous. I had the dealer look at it a few times and they removed the NAV TV unit I had to connect my ipod. That seems to have worked for a while, and now it starting to cut out/restart again. The Tech at the dealer says I should probably replace my PCM head unit with a stock one ($4,000 CDN) or buy an aftermarket unit that would give me much more usability, Bluetooth, better Nave, etc., but I would lose my steering wheel functionality. Has anyone else had this issue? If you replaced your PCM with an aftermarket unit, which one did you get? Any and all responses greatly appreciated.
  2. Based on the good responses from this board, I just ordered the Porsche short shifter. It will be installed on June 14th. I'll let you all know what I think of it once I've had a chance to use it for a while. Thanks, Alex
  3. Although I love the butter-smooth shifts in my 6-speed, the shifts are a bit long. I installed a B&M short shifter in my previous car, a Boxster S, and liked it a lot, but found it quite notchy. The shifts from 1 to 2, say, were not one fluid motion, but were 2 distinct movements, click...click. Does anyone out there have the OEM short-shifter installed? If so, what are your thoughts about it? Is it worth the $700+ cost for the shifter and installation? Obviously the transmission in my '08 turbo cab is different than in my Boxster S. Does the Turbo transmission inherently shift smoother than other Porsche transmissions, implying that a short shifter would reduce the shift length but still be one smooth motion from gear to gear (a good thing), or is the notchiness going to reapper if I install the OEM short shifter ( a not so good thing)?
  4. I'd like to know if this exhaust system works as advertised, i.e. sounds better than OEM with no drone, and improves throttle response. I'm most concerned with drone at cruising speeds. The increased throttle response would be nice, but I'm mostly interested in getting rid of the "vacuum cleaner on steriods" sound of the OEM exhaust. However, I won't change the exhaust unless, like the OEM exhaust, the aftermarket exhaust has no drone. My car is an '08 cab. Thanks for any and all responses. Alex
  5. I am big fan of top-down driving. If it's not raining or snowing my top is down. Keeping warm? Thats what the heater and heated seats are for. I even keep my sun roof open in my winter sedan if it's not snowing. I guess 30+ years of running has made me a big fan of fresh air. Good for you if you have your top down this week. Alex
  6. Hi Simon, Don't be concerned with the top soaking moisture. The great engineers at Porsche have ensured the fabric they use can withstand rain, sleet, and snow. If your top does get a little wet it will dry out in the heated parking spots you frequent. Enjoy your Turbo cab this winter. I'm afraid with the snowfall that we've had recently, I've already put my baby into hibernation. I was hoping to drive it until Dec 1, but them's the breaks. TTFN Alex PS. I am in Calgary frequently, visiting relatives or driving through to the mountains. If you ever see a cobalt blue cab with tan interior, give me a wave, or better still, stop me for a chat. I'll watch out for you. The trouble is, there are a lot more black turbos than blue ones, so I won't know if it's you or not. Perhaps we should create a secret hand signal or something? ;)
  7. I'm also from the Great White North (Edmonton). I plan on driving my '08 Turbo cab until the snow is so high that I turn into a snow plow. Given that I access my garage through a back lane, that will be sooner than those with front drive garages. Besides the RaggTopp, the only thing I would suggest is that you not take your car to a regular car wash, but to wash it at a wand-wash spot yourself. That way you can dry your top quite well before venturing into the below zero weather.
  8. I heartily agree with Phillipj's comment. I'm so pleased to hear that Porsche is stepping up and covering these niggling little problems (to them) under warranty. It makes me feel just a bit better in my decision to not purchase aftermarket warranty coverage.
  9. Thanks Phillip. Although I have a good relationship with my dealer, I'm sure they would not consider what you suggest about CPO because I didn't purchase my car from them. I bought it from an Aston Martin dealer in a foreign country, the USA. ;) What I was hoping to determine is if there are any inherent issues with these cars. For example, the M97 engines, especially the 2000 - 2005 ones are prone to IMS caused catastrophic engine failures. The RMS issues are also well known with that engine as well. I specifically purchased the Turbo because of its GT1 based engine, which I understand is pretty much bullet proof. I don't plan on modifying this car, with perhaps the exception of an aftermarket exhaust to make it sound more like a "real" Porsche. Any idea how long the stock turbos and intercooler/s tend to last? If they last 100+k miles that sounds reasonable, but if I'm looking at major turbo/intercooler cost at 50K or so that would help me decide whether a $6,500 aftermarket warranty might be worthwhile. I usually put 5 - 6,000 miles per year on my Porsches in the 6 months or so of driving weather in the Great White North. With luck and good maintenance, I plan on keeping this car for 8 - 10 years. Being 65 years old, this may be my last Porsche. :( Thanks again for your views.
  10. My Porsche warranty will expire on the 21st of Oct on my '08 Turbo cab. Over the years I've had a couple of Boxsters. Once out of warranty in the Boxsters I've never purchased aftermarket warranty, with good results. Being fairly new to the Turbo (I purchased it in April this year) I'm unfamiliar with the "usual" problem areas and the resulting costs. Any timebombs that I should be aware of? Any pros or cons regarding aftermarket warranty. Last time I checked I think I can get up to 5 years extended aftermarket warranty for $6,000+. Should I self-insure or is this a good purchase? Alberta Alex PS. My car will be going into hibernation for 5-6 months at the end of Oct.
  11. How is the drone or resonance at highway speeds? Alex
  12. Thanks Paul. I'll keep looking for luggage. Alex
  13. Howdy, I've had a Boxster and a Boxster S for the past 11 years. I just purchased a gorgeous '08 cobalt blue 997.1 TT cab with sand beige interior. Five other couples in P-cars, along with my wife and I, are going on a week-long trip to Mt Rushmore - Yellowstone Park in early June. I know how to pack a Boxster, two trunks and all, but I'm having a heck of a time finding any luggage that will fit in the area between the folded back seat and the windstop. Also, due to the AWD, the front trunk is substantially smaller than what I'm used to, so my usual two duffles will not fit. Only one will fit. Any and all suggestions regarding front and rear luggage would be appreciated. Alberta Alex PS. Posted pix to follow, once I wash the beast and dust off the camera.
