  1. As long as the dvd player has analog outs, a modulator will work fine. Only thing I can see is the low end on the dvd's overdriving the amp (which is crap). Some 40Hz high-pass filters work fine. I don't suppose you'll be driving while watching these dvd's?
  2. This is not an uncommon occurence. Though rms is in the lead, it would not surprize me if intermediate shaft failures are number two on the engine replacement list. I'm certainly familiar with it having had my engine replaced. We drive mass produced cars that are as sophisticated, if not more so, than exotica. These things happen. The likelihood of it happening with a new or rebuilt engine are slim. If you like the car, I would not loose any sleep over what happened. Also don't draw any distinctions between rebuilt and new. P is not consistent with engine numbering and can use new engine numbers on rebuilds and, I believe, visa-versa. Even the dealers don't know what they get. In 18 years of driving P's, I've had two major issues (whether they be electrical or mechanical). During the same period we've had 7 BMW's or MB's. The stack of shop orders on these looks like a major metropolitan yellow pages. Its part of price we pay for wanting the feel these cars deliver. Otherwise we'd all be driving Lexus.
  3. I have a 40th with X74. It basically sits on the ground. About every 6" along the bottom edge I put a series of wide flange aluminum pop rivets. You can't see them but when I scrape they take all the load and keep the chin about 1/8" off the pavement. The pop rivets look like crap but the chin spoiler is still without a nick. You can't see the rivets unless you get on your knees.
  4. I assume you mean GSD3's. I put two sets on two different BMW's a couple of years ago. The first set had nothing but balancing problems from day 1. One tire was replaced. After a few months of screwing around I dumped them for P-Zero's. The second set was not without its balancing challenges but they were manageable. However, after about 10,000 miles one of the tires went out of round (assume it was a belt separating). I think these tires are trash. They get real good write-ups from people who have a few 100 miles on them. I was one of them. Over the long-haul, my experience suggests stay as far away from them as possible. Unless you are in a position to simply pitch them if they don't work out. Otherwise they were wonderful tires. I've had 3 E39's with a slew of performance tires on them. In terms of being able to hold a line, respond to steering input, ride comfort, predictability, wear, noise and Florida monsoons, they are great. They also shake a lot.
  5. I almost feel like a troll. Ok, my thoughts. Looking at P: The supply line is with a company that obtains stiffness with weight rather than design. Others do better - witness Audi's desire to base the A8 on the Quattroporte platform. Other than the platform, P can source switches, trim and the like from just about anyone, likely at better prices and with superior look and feel. P has a very effective outsourcing program. It gives them substantial flexibility. Some of this flexibility will be lost. Especially if they have to pour volume into VW's overbloated capacity. Where are the connections: The Cayenne - king of the hill in a dying SUV class. The Panorama - aimed at a small market niche dominated by AMG MB's and M5's with sales driven by bragging rights as opposed to a pretty face and creature comforts. Another Quattroporte? - only this time Fiat/Ferrari is not going to give VW the platform they want from them. Looking at VW: Highly political with its ties to the Bavarian state - a "quasi" social institution with guaranteed sources of funding. Negative cash flow since at least 2002. Lest we not forget the EU is forcing the Bavarian state to separate itself from direct and indirect support of VW. Strong labor unions. Ethics and financial reporting are (best case) questionable. New product line already introduced at a time when Renault and Peugeot/Citroen are strengthening and just now revamping their entire product line, the Fiat Panda captured 35% of its market segment in its first year on the market and Fiat is also revamping its entire product line. As we split our time between Europe and the U.S., it is unmistakably evident that the slope of acceptance of Japanese brands has increased dramatically during the past 4 or 5 years. At the upper end, BMW shot itself in the foot with its styling -- doubtful they will make this mistake again. The Phaeton, Bugatti, Lambo and Bentley are at best PR distractions and at worst sinkholes for money. Lexus and Infiniti (Renault) are coming. My view: Good luck P but I'm not too pleased with the fact the premium I pay for these cars was used this way. And I wonder where all the management and technical resources are that will turn around VW? Can't call Toyota this time.
  6. "In making this investment, we seek to secure our plans for the future on a long-term footing." Wiedeking's defense of the VW investment as quoted in this month's christophorus. Any good businessmen out there want to comment on this strategy?
  7. PTEC, Thanks for the reply. The leak was -- at least appeared to be -- right above the bellhousing. I now understand the maintenance of oil pressure and the fact the valve train seemed ok. A few hours after it happened a retired F1 mechanic for Lotus and his son, a piston engine airplane mechanic dropped in. We had a heck of time coming up with explanations. The intermediate shaft was immediately eliminated as we believed it probably drove the oil pump. Have to hand it to Champion as well P. Called in about 7 am and the car was picked up within minutes. I called a few hours later to see if they knew the car was there and a new X51 was already on its way.
  8. I just had one go through the block with a truly ugly sound. Odd thing is the car never skipped a beat and I was convinced the sound was from another vehicle. Drove another 30 miles just fine, pressure and temp normal. Once the engine was turned off oil simply flowed out. Not a spot of oil on the undercarriage so I assume negative engine pressure kept me from losing it. New engine on the way. What does this shaft do? I thought perhaps the oil pump but I maintained pressure.
  9. "he should also consider the X74 suspension offered by Porsche. It is lower than the ROW M030 set up; however, it is harsher than the M030." Harsher than the US or ROW MO30? Though it is a firmer ride, X74 provides a substantially more controlled and less harsh drive. If I'm being stupid it will certainly hit the bump stops faster but in 95% of my driving its materially less harsh than the US MO30 that came with the car.
  10. I participated in running a Range Rover Defender desert rally car until recently. We all had a certain oiled replaceable manufacturer's name plastered on our vehicles. We had to, it was part of the required decal display. Virtually all of us ran paper elements - mostly factory stock. Bikes to a great extent made these filters popular. Mostly two strokes, lousy volumetric efficiency and rebuilt frequently. Advanced wear was a non issue. If you want noise, go for it. If you want performance think who has the better engineering group. If you plan to keep your car for awhile ...
  11. Guys, This is what was said. "When I am driving on the Autobahn in say 4th or 5th gear at a speed that places the RPMs around 2000-3000 and then step on the gas (HARD) the RPMs rise by about 300-500 before it seems to catch and begin accelerating. Outside that from a stop and go, no problem. At high speeds and high RPMs, again no problems. Please advise, and if it is the clutch about how long do I have before it goes, looking at taking the car to Italy in about 4 weeks for a vacation with my wife before I head back to Iraq." While the symptoms don't rule out clutch, the RPM's are not rising. "It" in "seems to catch", is referring to the car, not the clutch. Check when engine management cuts in. My X51: below 3,000 RPM its leisurely, above 3,050 it immediately hits and its a trip. Don't know what a standard 996 is like. There are few places in Germany to push a car and notice engine management. With what rountree is doing on the Autobahn may be the only time he feels the transition.
  12. MadCow, Great. Its the best blend of driver's car and long-distance comfort that I've owned. Enjoy it,
  13. Thanks Kim, "If you are talking about the intermitent wiper mode selected with the wiper stalk, then my car (and I assume all other without rain sensor) has a round knob, low on the left side of the center console, that adjusts the interval .... further clockwise = shorter interval between swipes." Yes, its this one. 2004 40th. Its shortest interval setting is a less frequent interval than the longest interval setting on any of our MB's or BMW's. Its pretty useless.
  14. Is it engine management cutting in? Mine (X51) cuts in at a touch over 3,000 rpm. Try putting the car in second gear and accelerate moderately. If you feel a transition, note the rpm and then go back to the autobahn.
  15. MadCow, We have a 40th and love it. The only issue I had with the car was the suspension. Its harsh and its detached. Tried messing with tire pressures which helped quite a bit but we finally ended up replacing it with X74 and the car now qualifies as a Porsche. If ride height is a concern, ROW MO30 is also nice. If you enjoy driving, I think swapping out the suspension is a must. With X74, there's actually less harshness. Tire pressures are 35F/40R.
