  1. I'm interested. I don't have any grand projects. But I still haven't taken off my front bumper to clean my radiator because every time I start trying to pull those clips out in the wheel well, I think I'm going to break them. I'm just chicken, I guess. So I'd still like some assistance doing that from someone who knows how to remove them without breaking them. I know that's a pretty small project for a WOCD. So I'm hoping there are others interested out there. We had such a big crowd last time. Anne
  2. Tom, I did my 4-stalk in an evening after work. So there should be enough time (as long as you've got all the parts). I'd be happy to help. Anne
  3. Loren, I saw your other recent post about the new renntech discount from MARS, which couldn't have showed up at a better time for me. My Boxster baby is in desperate need of their services. However, if they come to the next WOCD, I don't want to hog all their time. So, I'd definitely be interested if they're going to be there. If my car is going to take too long & others are interested in their services, I'd definitely just schedule my car with them outside the WOCD. I can always find something to do or some way to help at the WOCD. Anne
  4. Rich & I are planning on being there... but my car might not be able to make it (I think something might be horribly wrong with it). But I'll be there to help out with anything that I can. Looking forward to seeing everyone, and meeting all the new folks. Thanks to David & Mary for hosting! Anne
  5. I'll certainly be there if I can make it. I don't have any projects right now, but you never know what will happen by then. Even if I don't have something, I'd love to be there to help out & check out what every one else is doing. Anne
  6. It's been a while since we organized a work-on-cars day for the Sacramento area. Is anyone up for another one? I heard the possibility of doing a 4-stalk conversion for OBC and cruise for a 2003 Boxster S. I looked up the cruise portion of that, and it looks significantly easier than on the non-egas Boxsters. The wiring for the cruise even looks like it's a bit easier than it was for pre-2003 Boxsters. That would be a fun project. So if you've got a project or maintenance item, or would like to attend to watch, learn and help out, please respond to this thread. We can try to coordinate a convenient date for everyone. Anne
  7. Todd, Loren says he's willing to do help me with this, but with details so we don't accidentally mess up my DME. Can you tell me what steps we would follow, with the PST, to do the remapping, coding change, and remapping (back to 986)? Is there anything special we need to be aware of while doing this? Thanks for all of your input! I'm really excited that there might be a way to fix this without another car involved. Anne
  8. LowFlyR, My fuel gauge is no good. It's great for the top 1/4 tank. Below that, and it reads very high. I haven't figured out yet how or when I'm going to fix it (along with my cabriolet light issue). I know the straight-forward approach is to find someone with a 2002 or newer 996 (non-turbo) that is willing to let me take apart their dash to plug in my cluster so it can be reprogrammed. That's harder than it sounds. ;) I'm not sure if I could flash my DME to use software for a C2, reprogram the cluster & then flash it back to being a 986 DME. I looked up the DME part numbers and they're the same. I'm still researching whether this is feasible, and what the disastrous possibilities are if it doesn't work. At this point, I know how far I can get on a tank of gas, so I just refill before that point. I haven't managed to run out of gas yet, but it is annoying. Anne
  9. Loren, If you end up looking at this, I would love to come by just to watch & learn (if nobody minds). If that would be okay, just let me know when & where. I'll stop by if I can make it. Anne
  10. So, Todd, what I think you're saying is that the most straight-forward fix for this to allow me to fix my top light problem, and be able to easily code the cluster in the future, is to install a 996 engine and all the other required parts (per your previous Boxster engine-swap posts) into my car. Hey Loren, do you think this would be a good project for the next work-on-cars day?? ;) Seriously, the top light isn't that pressing an issue for me. If there was someone with a MY02 or newer 996 in the area that would let me borrow their car to program the cluster, that would be okay. Unless I have issues with the fuel gauge, I'm not desperate to get it recoded right now. Too bad Chuck's car is a Turbo. I might have tried to talk him into letting me use his car to code the cluster if I helped him install a short shifter. :D Anne
  11. Bill, I've just completed the swap. The donor car was a MY02 996 C4S. My car is a MY01 986. I did it in 2 stages for scheduling reasons. After having the odometer on the donor cluster corrected to match my mileage, I modified the instrument surround, and installed it in the car. Several days later, I installed the oil pressure sending unit with the extra wire. On the fuel gauge issue, I had tested my cluster when I first received it. I had 7/8th of a tank on the Boxster gauge, and the same when I plugged in the Carerra cluster. However, when I actually did the swap, there was 1/4 tank on the Boxster cluster, and the Carerra cluster showed 1/2 tank. Filling the tank seems to have resolved the discrepancy. The gauge has been reading as expected since then. The only issue I have left to unravel is the cabriolet light. I did the oil pressure sending part at our recent work-on-cars day, and Loren connected my car to the computer to try to get the cab light working. He set the model type to the code for the 996 C2 Cab in the vehicle data section. That didn't make the cab light operational, and the software still showed the instrument cluster item with a "?" next to it, and didn't allow any cluster programming. He got the same result with both the PIWIS and the PST2. So we set the model code back to the Boxster code. Since you mentioned having issue with getting the cab light working, do you have any suggestions on what I might have missed. It's possible that there's something defective about the cluster. I doubt that though, since the the gauges are all reading correctly, and the communication between the cluster and the A/C unit is working properly. Thanks! Anne
  12. I think its a go for this Saturday (11/17). We have a couple cars, and it sounds like Loren's in. So we just need to figure out where & what time. My house is a possibility. Our garage is a bit of a nightmare (as I said at the last work-on-cars day, a car is a very convenient & compact storage mechanism for car parts; unfortunately, we have a car with all the parts outside of the car). But we do have lots of tools, and we can find what we need most of the time. ;) I don't want to just invite ourselves over to Loren's house. So Loren, if you want us all to come over again, that's an option too. :) I'll have my camera, wherever we are. So if we want to take photos of anything, we can. Anne
  13. Kirk, I was thinking that you'd have to hurry to get anything to install that quickly. Convincing your wife that you need new goodies, and then purchasing and receiving those goodies can be a time consuming process. On the stress bars, I think we have enough projects for my car this time already. It'll be interesting to see if I get through them all. I got my new gauge cluster back from the speedometer repair shop today, and it now has the correct odometer reading on it. So I spent the evening bravely using the Dremel to reshape the instrument surround for the new voltmeter & oil pressure gauges (no turning back now). That took a few hours, but I got it done, and hooked up the new cluster in the car. I still have all the oil pressure stuff to go. But I didn't think the Dremel part would be a good work-on-cars day thing. It just takes time and patience (and leaves fine black dust in everything; I have to go wash all of it out of my hair now). At least it's rewarding. The new cluster is basically functional, and very cool. Anne
  14. We've got out-of-town guests this weekend, but we're clear for next weekend (Nov 17th). Anne
  15. I don't think we've got enough interest to get access to the lift right now. So, we need to decide whether we're going to do this or postpone. I have all the parts necessary for installing the 996 instrument cluster in my Boxster. The 996 cluster is at the speedometer repair shop right now getting the odometer set to match the mileage on my current cluster. I should have it back mid next week. Since part of the instructions for running the wiring reference instructions for installation the B&M short shift kit, I've got that on its way as well. I might as well do them at the same time. :D So I'll be working on my car regardless. Loren, are you available/interested? Is anyone else interested in a work-on-cars day this month? It'd definitely be nice to meet you Justin. An audio installer (and fellow Porsche enthusiast) is always a great resource. But this is a long way for you and Kirk to drive. If it's worth it for you guys to do the drive, that's cool too. I just want to get feedback on whether there's enough interest to proceed. I know very little about Boxsters. I'm still learning. I know nothing about Cayennes. So I'm not much help with anyone else's project (unless you're interested in changing oil or doing the 4-stalk OBC install on the Boxster... that I've done). I'm learning from the rest of you. We can always postpone until we have more people with projects on their wish lists. I'm always happy to come along & see what other people are doing, and pitch in where I can help. Anne
