  1. Jeff, Thanks for the recommendation ... I looked for the switch on the car, but could not find it ... it does sound like a switch .... I was hoping it's not related to the PCM ... I did called Marvin and have an appointment for Wednesday (he's swampped). Does anyone know the part number for the switch?? Maybe I should order it from Sunset to save a few more $$??
  2. I've had this '03 Boxster S for about a year now. I was flagged down by another motorist yesterday who told me that my stop lights were out. I check and all three sets were bad. First thing I checked was the fuse, all good. Then I went and bought a few bulbs ... all the bulbs turned out to be fine. Now I'm wondering ... electrical problems?? Anyone out there with a suggestion where to look or a mechanic I can take it to (San Jose area)??
  3. There is an outside chance that I might be traveling to Chicago, but if I'm around then I'll be there. Are there specific work-items you have in mind? (Mind you, I'm less useful than a block of cement :) ). I've been meaning to do my fuel filter, but want to do it with someone who has done this before and can guide me. I'd like to do the Cruise & OBC hack. I might also want to do the hardwire V1 also and if we have time, I'd like to do the garage door hack as well.
  4. This site may help if you've not bought something yet. I had a blow out Friday and bought the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport because they were pretty cheap and they ranked fairly high and have good wear ratings (important to me as I drive 150 miles a day).
  5. Just a note for those who are in the SF Bay area ... I was shopping for the VW wires and came across a shocking difference in prices. I had one quote from a dealer in Walnut Creek for $10/EACH wire. Then I called around the South Bay and found the Stevens Creek VW was asking $5/ea ... another place (Capitol VW) was asking $7/ea ... Finally, I called Winn VW in Newark and they only wanted $3/ea ... Wow  ... a few dollars each is not THAT bad if you're buying one or two, but we need what nine! Spending a hundred dollars is crazy ... I told the parts guy about the other dealers pricing and all he had to say (with a laugh) was that the markup was ... 'a bit much'!!!
  6. Anyone interested in getting together to do a work on cars event? Looking at my calendar, the Saturday after Xmas (29th of this month) is open for me. Tool Pants, you mentioned that you might be able to get the garage in your office opened for that?? Can you confirm??
  7. I'm not sure if these would work on the boxsters. In looking at my mirror mount, it's oval (kind of enlongated oval) ... these mounts looks like it requires a round mount!
  8. Newbie again ... just noticed that my visor does not rotate to cover the drivers side ... well, it simply goes up and down and don't rotate otherwise like in other cars I have. Anyway, what you folks do when the sun is shining brightly over your left shoulders??? Even with a pair of sunglasses, it's very distracting. Now, I just use my hands to cover it, but that's not a good idea for the long haul. I'm curious what other Boxster owners do to combat this problem.
  9. Hi, I just bought an Escort 8500 x50 and am planning to do a hard wire mount. But was wondering, what is the best way to mount it on a Boxster?? I've seen people mount it high up and to the right of the rear view mirror and that looks ok. But other than the suction cups, are there more permanent mounts available? If so, where can I get one?
  10. Concerning the Optima batteries, the one thing to watch out for in these Optima batteries is that you DO NOT run it down completely. If you do, these batteries DO NOT recover. I've had two friends who put them in their cars, one in a Corvette and another in a 912. They let the car sat and could not start it after a couple of months and the battery would not charge. Both had the batteries replaced and it happened again after a few months. Otherwise, they're nice batteries ... a tad bit expensive though.
  11. Hello, Me again, the newbie who just acquired a '03 986S ... went to the dealer over lunch to see if I could get a second or third set of car keys. Only got one key for the car. The parts dealer at Fremont Porsche told me about $400/ea!!! :o I told him I'd think about it more!! So ... is there a way of getting some spare keys cheaper?? I see that Sunset Imports has a set of Remote Heads for ~$100 ... but still need the key itself. Then someone would have to program the heads for my car ... thoughts on the latter two parts, on where I can get them done cheap?! Appreciate all your help here. GREAT SITE!!
  12. This is GREAT news!! :clapping: I've put in a thousand miles on the car this weekend :o and I'll tell you what, I really missed the cruise control!! :) I'll get the 4-stalk on order right away. Please correct if I'm wrong. The parts I need to order are as follows: 996-613-219-10-ewc - Stalk 999-652-972-40 - 2/ea connectors 999-652-973-40 - one/ea 11 wire connector ends, you solder them on other wires .24 But my question here is the following: What is the part number for the cap for the cruise control What is the part number for the cap for the OBC What the heck are "wire connector ends" ... is there a part number out there for this? What wires do we need ... is there a recommended part number?? So, if I summarize the install instructions for 2003 Boxster S for the 4-column stalk are as follows: Cruise: Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 17 - Stalk Connector Pin 1 Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 4 - Stalk Connector Pin 3 Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 1 - Stalk Connector Pin 4 Fuse B7 - Stalk Connector Pin 2 OBC: Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 23 - Stalk Connector Pin 2 Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 22 - Stalk Connector Pin 3 Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 21 - Stalk Connector Pin 4 Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 24 - Stalk Connector Pin 5 Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 25 - Stalk Connector Pin 6 Earth (ground) - Stalk Connector Pin 1 Did I missed anything?? Wow, this is such a great site with so many helpful people. THANK YOU ALL for all your support and helpful information!!
  13. Thanks for all the replies ... the I've read some of the other posts and seem to have determined that this can be done. But one question I have is that the cruise control should require an actuator of some kind. How do I know if that's included in my car ... or is the actuator included in all of the Boxsters and all that's required is the stalk and the computer enabled??
  14. Newbie here ... just got a 2003 Boxster S (love the car by the way) and it did not come with either the OBC or the Cruise control. Both of which, especially the cruise control are highly desirable. I've searched the forums and have come to realize that a 4-stalk replacement might be available. With that I believe I can ask one of the Porsche mechanics to enable the OBC ... but the main question I have here is about the cruise control. What other hardware is required besides the 4-stalk replacement?? Lastly, can anyone recommend a place (online or otherwise) to obtain the 4-stalk unit at a good price. I live in the SF Bay Area. Would appreciate any help anyone may offer. Thanks a bunch! Chris
