  1. Thanks for the advice! I have received a quote for an engine rebuild with the IMS fix by a shop for about $6500. Sound fair?
  2. Hi All - Some sad news today. After having my Boxster in for routine maintenance, the shop called to say there were magnetic aluminum flakes in the oil and oil filter. No problems previously but after some research, I have come to believe this is caused by the infamous IMS malfunction. At the present point in time, no check engine light, no smoke, no rattles or various noises... Porsche told the dealer that because of vehicle age (2001), no previous Porsche records (I had all maintenance done by a small neighborhood foreign car shop), since I don't own more than one Porsche, and didn't have original manufacturer warranty, I would be on my own. Porsche dealer has recommended a new engine. I inquired about IMS but they said it would take $3k to disassemble engine and then even begin diagnosing. Porsche recommended a rebuilt or crashed motor for the "cost-wary". I called my local shop to inquire. I spoke to them about the upgraded IMS kits using ceramic instead of the aluminum. They said they would look into it but would first need to conduct some research. So, in a way to look for some advice and in a way to just lament over my once naive love towards Porsche - does anyone have prior experience with the same? I'm not at all equipped to undergo a IMS swap in my garage and would need a professional to do this. Ideas? Recommendations?
  3. Hi 1schoir! I went to Mitchell's Auto Upholstery, 22073 N. Pepper Rd. Unit E, Barrington, IL 60010. He did an excellent job! I had the top replaced with the GAHH glass and my headliner needed some fixing since the front was warped and causing it to hang low. Total ended up to $1984 with install, parts & tax. Labor was about $800. I would suggest calling him up and talking with him for a quote.. for the top he quoted about $1975 But may be less expensive due to the headliner on mine which ended up costing an extra 60 bucks to fix. His number is (847) 382-8746. He had a two-day turnaround... dropped off on Tuesday and picked up on Wednesday evening. I would highly recommend it. Thanks for the tips on the Litronics! I'll look into that more.. but gotta save up before the next endeavor!!
  4. Welcome to Barrington Illinois friend! Lol, I would NEVER take my Box to that Porsche dealership, even if my life depended on it... they overcharge on EVERYTHING just because of the neighborhood they're in. If you absolutely "have" to take it to a Porsche Dealer, Take it to Napelton Porsche of Westmont off Ogden. Much more "realistic" pricing. Wow, thanks for the advice! I just picked up my baby from the shop and it looks beautiful. The upholstery shop managed to reuse my previously warped headliner by replacing the rod in the front and using rivets. You really can't tell the headliner didn't come with the GAHH top. I love the rear glass and my worries about the top are gone. Total cost: $1,984. Next up... headlights. Oh yeah.
  5. Hi All, Just a general question: My '01 Boxster has a nasty squeak when I engage the clutch pedal. I'm sure it's the pedal but I'm not sure how to begin to approach this problem. Has anyone else encountered this and what parts in particular shall I look into? Or rather, tell my mechanic. Anyone know how much a full pedal assembly would cost for parts and installation? Thanks!
  6. So I found an upholstery shop to replace the top with a nice GAHH top w/ glass window and the headliner will be pinned back into place. I'm waiting on my appointment for the second week of May.
  7. Thank you all for your suggestions! I will make some calls, Google some places and see what I can come up with! Thanks :)
  8. Looking to replace top on my '01 Porsche Boxster. The rear window is cracked and was told by the Porsche dealership in Barrington, IL the whole top needs to be replaced. I was given a rough estimate of $2,700 just for parts. Now, I'm considering my options and trying to figure out the best plan of attack for replacing the window/entire top. My current headliner has been warped in the front and hangs low, this too will need replaced. Now my question: If I go for the GAHH or Robbins top, will I also be able to get a headliner for it? And will it fit? What would be a reasonable price to pay for an installation? And if there are any IL people here, where should I go? Thanks!
  9. I lost the faceplate on mine too... I ended up using some super glue (Gorilla brand) and glued it on while extended. After a couple minutes holding it on and waiting for glue to dry, I pushed the holder back in and it has worked since. Mind you, I do not use the cupholders so it is purely cosmetic. This solution has worked best for me.
  10. After looking at this thread: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...616&hl=avic it now appears the console once held a 2-DIN receiver which was later changed back to a replacement CDR-220 and rigged to work with cupholders.
  11. Yes, I had ordered the top shelf for this purpose. Unfortunately, as I slid it in there was still a gap between the bottom of the shelf and the top of the radio. It also appeared to me, that it wouldn't really snap into place. It fits in fine, and snapped right into place just below the radio and above the climate control. Is there something I'm missing? I have read, that if one wishes to relocate the climate controls to the top-most opening then trim peice: 996 552 677 00 01C is needed along with: Brackets: 996 573 501 00 The storage shelf # I currently have is: 996-552-253-01-01c Is a different shelf necessary to go on top? Thanks! --- Problem? --- After reviewing your posted picture, it looks as though the eyelits for the screws no longer exist on my console. Side brackets were used to secure the cupholders in place. Do I need to get a new completely new console as you have pictured?
  12. Thanks for all your help! I have found my answers under: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...cupholderectomy I managed to take out the cupholders but found I couldn't fit anything else into the empty space as the hole is too big. Cupholders had to go back in for now. I believe I'm missing a spacer. I may just go with moving the a/c to the top. We'll see... back to the drawing board.
  13. Hey Gus! Thanks for your reply.. unfortunately the link doesn't work. Could you repost?? Thanks!
  14. Does anyone know how to: 1) Remove the cupholders? 2) Remove the cassette holder? 3) Swap the trim from the cassette holder into a cd holder I would also like to make the following changes... My current dash console setup is as follows: Cupholders Radio Cassette Holder Climate Controls I have ordered an empty shelf and the cd holder and would like to install these. Ideally, I would like the following setup: Radio CD shelf Shelf Climate Control Is this possible? I have read that it may be more difficult than anticipated and I will have to resort to the following: Shelf Radio CD Holder Climate Controls. Any recommendations? Thanks! :D
