  1. 99P911, I don't have a scanner but looks like I'm gonna need one. I guess the laptop software versions are a lot better than the comparably priced hand held units? Autozone has a $150 Actron handheld. I'm just anxious to dive into this. Thanks!
  2. Saturday I installed a set of cat by-pass pipes on my '99 C4. Took the car out for a 15 minute drive and it ran great! Later I drove about 10 miles to a store and CEL came on but this was expected. Left store and drove 20 miles to my parents house. About 2/3 of the way there the engine started running roughly and it kept getting worse. The CEL also started flashing. I disconnected/reconnected the battery at my parents house to reset the computer and the car ran great again. Unfortunately I had to do the disconnect/reconnect battery thing three times on my way back home. When I got home I noticed the right exhaust tip (left cylinder bank) had black soot all around it. The left tip was normal. I decided I had damaged one of the O2 sensors and thought if I switched the sensors from one side to the other, the opposite bank would start burning rich and I could pinpoint the bad sensor by process of elimination. Well last night I first switched the two after-cat sensors, reconnected the battery, and took the car out for a drive. Left bank still started running really rich after a few miles, just like before. I let the engine cool, switched the other two sensors, reconnected battery, went for a drive. Same problem, left bank running really rich. I guess my next step is to re-install the OEM pipes but I really don't think that will cure the problem and I really like the sound and performance improvement of the by-pass pipes. Any suggestions will really be appreciated. Thanks!
  3. I purchased a '99 C4 earlier this year with the PCM1 system. I did not get any discs with the car and called Navtech to inquire. The rep I talked with said the 2001.1 discs will work. From browsing the forum I'm under the impression the disc reader was upgraded from 8 bit to 16 bit in '01. Is this correct? If so, will the 2001.1 discs work only with a 16 bit reader or both 8 & 16 bit? Also, does anyone know the price for a 16 bit reader from Porsche and if it is a significant improvement over the 8 bit unit? I understand it easy easy to swap out. Thanks!
  4. I had the same problem and discovered my engine compartment lid was not shut completely. There is a switch on the lid that will prevent the top lowering sequence from beginning. I didn't look for switch but it should be easy to find. Could be sticking or adjustable?
  5. Thanks Tool Pants. I verified with the Porsche dealership that the hydraulic fluid for the top motor is the ZH-M type. I found that Mercedes uses the same oil in their hydraulic suspensions and convertible top motors. A liter was $17 at the local Mercedes dealership. The part number is 000 989 91 03 10. Incidently, topping up the reservoir fixed my problem. Also, to answer the question about the pump motor location. It is behind the rear seats. Partially raise the top so the rear cover is fully extended. Release the two cables from under the back window and fold it forward so you can access the area behind the rear seats. Remove the interior trim cover to expose the pump motor, lines, etc. The pump motor has a clear reservoir on the bottom. There is a a hex head plug in the fill hole right above the reservoir, between two hydraulic line fittings.
  6. The hydraulic motor that drives the top on my '99 996 Cab is "groaning". It was making this noise when a bought the car a few months ago. I checked the reservoir and the fluid level is below MIN so I'm hoping that's the problem. I called the closest dealer (120 miles away) and they don't have any in stock but will order some at $20+ for 250 ml. Question. Do I have the use the official Porsche hydraulic oil or can I buy something locally that will do the job?
