  1. Hey all, I have an intermittent issue with a convertible top on a 2003 Boxster. After the car has sat for over a week the convertible top won't go up or down via the switch on the dash. Thanks to the great advice on these forums I was able to eliminate a lot of potential problems (parking break dash light, micro switches, blown fuses). Then I came to some suggestions involving the relay panel and, sure enough, if I pull a relay and put it back in, the convertible top switch on the dash works again. What I can't figure out is why this works. It seems like I'm pulling the wrong relay? I 'borrowed' this pic from another thread because the relay panel looks the same as mine. Everything I've been reading says that the convertible top relay is the long rectangular white box. However, when I pull the smaller white box to the right of it and put it back in, the one with the blue sides (see pic below), the top works again. In case anyone can't see it from the above, here's another pic... The relay I pull to get the top to work again is the one to the right of the yellow outline: Does anyone know why the top works by pulling the wrong box, to the right of what should be the convertible top relay? What is this relay, and if I replace it would it alleviate the issue?
  2. Well, it definitely was an unusual problem causing the noise! I'm happy to report that Renntech helped me FIX this issue! Thanks 1schoir! After reading your post I did a lot of research looking for information on blower, fan, blower motor.I felt it was the blower motor since it got louder and softer as I turned the velocity of air up and down. I eventually came upon a bunch of posts dealing with foam getting stuck in the blower motor, here are a few choice selections: http://www.renntech....lap-flap-noise/ http://www.renntech....nside-the-dash/ I even found a pic of the blower motor: http://www.pelicanpa...tion_red_on.GIF I thought I had the same issue as the other posters and there was foam stuck on the squirrel cage, so I took apart the pieces under the front hood on the passenger side. First I revealed the cabin air filter, then I removed it, and I saw the squirrel cage. I took some pics along the way. For anyone else like me who comes along and is having this issue, here's what the pictures represent and how to check this: 1. Top/right in front of the passenger dash is where you find the pollen filter. It's easy, open the hood, take off the plastic pieces / grill protecting the top using a wrench 2. You will see the area where the cabin filter is, it's easy to remove (already removed in this pic) just gently slide the cabin air filter out from the slot 3. Deep inside of this hole you can see the squirrel cage that matches the pelican parts pic I linked above. It's down through the hole past a large plastic flap 4. You can turn the cage to inspect the blades. You can see in pic 4 a dark mass on the blades, THAT is what was causing all of the noise! Instead of finding a piece of foam in there as I suspected, I actually found a piece of electrical tape that was stuck pretty tight to 5 of the blower cage blades. I have no idea how that got in there past the pollen filter but it did! As soon as I pulled the tape out I was good to go! If you find something in there and plan to pull it out, as others have said in different posts, make sure the car is off and the fan is not running before you stick you hand down there! So Richard you were dead on with the cause as well. Any ideas on how a piece of electrical tape could have found a way into this area?
  3. Yesterday morning my 2003 Porsche Boxster started to make a loud and hard to describe noise (is it rumbling or buzzing or lawn mower?). The noise happens with the engine on or off whenever the fan is blowing air through the ac vents. I've tested and it makes the same noise whether the AC is on or off, so it must be the blower? It also makes the noise whether I have it blowing hot or cold air. Interestingly enough the AC continues to work and gets cold, but I'm a little concerned that it's going to break down soon. The sound is coming from behind the glove box on the passenger side. Thoughts on what this could be? I have an oil change scheduled and want to know what I'm dealing with before I get it inspected. TIA!
  4. Hi faserjames, thanks for the input! As an update my situation, I decided to have the work done from the same place that gave the original quote. I got quotes from others in the area but the local place that I use for repairs is very good at what they do and have done good work for me in the past. Overall the price was similar no matter where I would have taken it. This was my RMS leak: Clutch Disk: When all was said and done I decided that, if they were going to pull out the guts anyways, I might as well get everything done while in there. I ended up replacing the RMS, upgraded the IMS, replaced the AOS, replaced the flywheel and clutch. It's amazing how easy the clutch pedal is now. :) Total for all of this was around $3,300.
  5. Hey all, I just took my 2003 Boxster with 80K miles in for a routine oil change and got the dreaded call. The shop says they've detected a leak but won't know for sure (IMS or RMS) until they pull down the transmission. The first thing that troubles me is I have a spotless garage and absolutely no signs of oil anywhere - is it normal to have a leak of this nature without oil in my garage anywhere? Anyways, the quoted price to pull the transmission and detect the leak is $1,200. To pull the transmission, replace the IMS with the retrofit, and replace the clutch is around $3,000 with parts. No mention was made of the RMS which surprises me, shouldn't I also replace that at the same time? Also, what do you think of these prices? I definitely want to get this work done if it means I can avoid a catastrophic failure but wonder if there's not another place in town that can do it for less...
  6. Thank you for all of the feedback. I just installed the SilverStar Ultra last night - they look pretty good, definitely a step up from the lights in there previously. They are whiter and brighter for sure. This was my first experience changing out a bulb on a Boxster. After reading some of the guides online I thought it was going to be a huge project, but it turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. :)
  7. Has anyone out there tried these two competing bulbs? Link to Osram Silverstar Link to Sylvania SilverStar Ultra They are both H7 55W for my stock headlight assembly on a 2003 Boxster. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced the difference between the two bulbs, which set looks better & provides better night vision. PS: Any chance that either of these bulbs would do THIS?
  8. This could explain why I've just started hearing the noise. I live in Arizona, it doesn't usually get cold out. :)
  9. Thanks everyone! What should I expect to pay for a secondary air pump replacement at the shop? I hadn't noticed just how bad the backs were until you said something about it. :(
  10. Recently my 2003 Porsche Boxster has started to make a high pitched whine on startup that goes away in about 40 seconds. I've taken a video of the problem: The noise sounds to be originating from the engine area and goes away on it's own. I have heard the same noise when going about 30 MPH, but not very often. What do you think this could be? AOS, belt, FAN, transmission, etc? I am planning to take it into the shop soon but want some feedback so I can go in there somewhat educated.
  11. My 2003 Boxster has a tan convertible top with black streaks/stains on the right and left rear sides. I think they're associated with the way the top folds into the body somehow. Not sure, I bought the car used and they were there when I got it. I went into AutoZone and bought a bottle of BlueMagic Convertible Top cleaner, but it didn't work like I'd hoped. The stains are still there and I'm ready to try something else. I really want to clean this up! See the attached picture. Does anyone know of a cleaning product and/or cleaning method I can use to make this look like new?
  12. Thanks for the assistance. I actually found the part I needed and it was a simple $2.00 piece called "Fuel Door Hinge Cap". http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/...2004)%2C%20Each
  13. If you're still looking for this part, I just posted it on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...em=290316008216
  14. The original owner of my used 2003 Porsche Boxster broke the little bar inside of the gas cap area that locks this area when the car is locked. Essentially, the gas area is free to be opened at any time. The dealer who sold the car to me mentioned that a lot of Porsche owners do this because they don't want the hassle of the locking gas area. I really DO want it. Would this be something that's easy to fix? The locking mechanism itself is fine, it's the little metal bar that it catches on to that's been broken off.
  15. I just purchased a beautiful forest green 2003 Porsche Boxster. I noticed at the top left side of the dash there's a small, circular area that is covered by a plastic grill. The grill has slits in the middle of it. Does anyone know what this is for? A guy told me that this might be there for cars that have an upgraded audio kit but I'm not sure.
