  1. Oil seepage around the valve covers doesn't say much. That could be a lot of different things. It could be as easy as leaky spark plug tubes which is fairly common and not too difficult to fix. You'll have to get more detail.
  2. Well, I had the ignition switch replaced about a year ago. Maybe I'll get lucky and that's all it will be. Thanks.
  3. Consult the manual. There's a way to jump directly to the fusebox to power up the electric hatch release. Also, there is supposed to be a manual cable release in the wheel well behind the passenger side headlight. Your mileage may vary.
  4. I have a 2001 C4 cabriolet. I went to adjust the clock yesterday. Per the manual: Pressed and held the clock set knob When the hours started blinking I used the knob to adjust the hours Pressed the set knob to move to the minutes and twisted the knob to adjust Pressed the set knob one more time to return to normal operation. Looked like it worked fine until I turned the motor off and pulled out the key. Now the hour in the time display started blinking as if it were back in the "time set" mode. And all the digital displays on the dash stayed on. They didn't shut off like they normally do. With the ignition off you can't adjust the time or use the set knob to take it out of "set mode". I turned the car back on and tried a number of different combinations of setting the clock. For example, the manual said that if you left the clock in "set mode" it would automatically revert back to "run mode" if you didn't do anything for a couple minutes. Just like the manual says, it reset back into run mode after a few minutes. But when I turned the key off... right back to the blinking hour display and set mode. Having all the digital displays remaining active on the dash can't be good if I were to leave the car for a couple days without the battery charger connected. Anyone ever see this before? Got any suggestions? Bill
  5. Thanks guys. I passed on the car. I did a little research and you're right. The economics of this car don't make sense. However, I will say that getting a clean 928S4 with mileage below 100K seems to cost between $15K and $20K. Assuming that we are, in fact, talking about a clean low mileage car, do you agree that this is the sort of price range to expect? Thanks again, Bill
  6. I already own an '89 944S2 and an '01 911 C4 cabriolet. I'm a PCA member and am at least a little familiar with Porsches. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the 928. Don't know why. For the past couple days I've been driving an '85 928S. It's for sale. Not a bad car. It's got 140K miles (at least until the speedo broke but the info from the last oil change suggests that it broke very recently). Cosmetically it's in good shape - just good, not great. It's worn but there are no major cosmetic flaws that jump out at you. The engine runs a bit rich but seems to work well otherwise. All the systems appear to work except for maybe the windshield washer pump. Here's by beef. My 944 is of the same vintage as this 928 but the two cars couldn't be more different. Compared to my 944 the steering on the 928 is very heavy, the brakes don't seem as powerful, the clutch is heavy as hell, the shift pattern is quirky, everything about the car feels heavy and the car just doesn't seem anywhere near as tight as the 944 is. Is this normal for the 928 family or is this car just an overly worn example? I can pick it up for ~$7,500. I know you folks don't have much to go on but I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have about the potential of this purchase. Thanks Bill
  7. I'm itching to see what happens here. I've got a 2001 C4 Cabriolet (tiptronic, no nav system). Every once in a while I get the same symptom - insert the key, interior & dash lights behave correctly. But when I try to start it, nothing happens. No sound. The lights don't dim so I know nothing is happening that draws much current. I've seen this happen repeatedly and then go away for months. When it was happening I tried cycling the door locks/alarm, pulling the emergency brake, pressing on the brake and much more but nothing work. It just seems random. Love to hear if anyone else has had the same experience. Love to hear if anyone has fixed it. Bill
