  1. Thanks for the responses... I just got a Quick-Jack lift which raises the car around 22". Not enough to drop the engine, but certainly enough to do most work. Does anyone know if there are any DIY's on how to replace the O rings on the oil return tubes? Sounds like the easiest of the repairs, so I think I'll start there.
  2. Thanks Richard - this is exactly what I was looking for. If I need any additional info I'll reach out to you fot they DIY sheet.
  3. I've searched and can't seem to find anything on this topic either. I also can't find ANTHING at all, on the odometer in the Service Manual. The service manual only talks about the speedometer sensor. The speedometer and cruise work fine, but the odometer/tripometer are dead... Both just stopped working at my last fill-up when I reset the tripometer (to track fuel mileage) - trip stayed at 0000 and the odometer has not moved 1/10th of a mile since. Great way to keep my mileage down - but not the way I really want to do it. :D Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks! :clapping:
  4. I've searched and can't find any topics... My 85 911 does not shed a drop of oil during the warm months (either on the floor or burning). But during the fall/winter (below 50 deg F) I must put a pan underneath the engine to catch all the oil I lose. She will easily lose 1 qt p/month during the below 50 months. I don't have a lift, so I'm limited in what I can do and when I can do it, so if anyone has any ideas for what I need to check (or do), I can at least schedule some "quality" time with my mechanic. Thanks.
  5. okay - so it took me a year to get to it... I took the lock mechanism apart and was able to operate the micro-switch directly out of the door lock using my finger. Push the tiny hair-like switch one way and it activates the transmission element (which moves the push rod that locks and unlocks the door) to unlock the door. Push it the other way and it makes a faint "click" sound, but does not activate the transmission element. I took apart all the connections and cleaned them - no luck. Any ideas where I go from here? It could be anything, transmission element, door locking control unit, broken wire, ???? Any ideas?
  6. I've had the car for 4 months now and trying to resolve the few remaining issues - any help is appreciated. The main/consistent problems are: 1) The clock doesn't work. The fuse is good and the light works, but I can't figure out how to debug it. Is there a way to test the clock? How about the relay which is behind the fuel gauge? Clock has not worked since I got the car. 2) The power passenger sideview mirror doesn't work. When I move the switch to the passenger position and them operate the switch that's suppose to move the mirror, you can hear clicking but no motor whirr and no mirror movement. When switched to the driver’s side, you hear both the clicking and the motor whirr as the mirror moves. Passenger mirror has not worked since I got the car. 3) I can't lock the car (both doors) with the key from the driver’s door (c337cc/Howard already suggested that the problem lies with the micro switch in the driver’s door handle, but I haven't had a chance to look into that yet). It was working when I got the car, it has since stopped since the door stop incident (see below). The intermittent problems (which when one occurs, they all occur)are: 4) The central locking switch (located in the center console under the A/C fan and temp control knobs) will not lock or unlock the doors. 5) The intermittent wipers don't work. 6) The wipers don't cycle back to the home position - they stop wherever they are when you turn the switch off. None of these 3 problems appeared to exist when I got the car, but they start showing up (intermittently), when the door stop incident happened (see below). All 3 things are working right this minute, so it's definitely intermittent - and I can't seem to figure out what triggers the problem. The incident with the door stop was as follows. The original stop had worn out (as they all do) which allowed the door to open too wide. This resulted in some wires being crushed when the door opened all the way (which happened a couple of times). :( When it happened, I heard a clicking sound (like the doors being unlocked) and then I couldn't lock the doors with the key from the driver’s side. I then (purposely) opened the door too wide again (I know - pretty dumb) and it fixed the problem - I could lock both doors from the driver side again. This happened a couple of more times over the next couple of days/weeks. I figured this wasn't good so I replaced the stop. Since replacing the stop, the doors won't lock at all from the driver’s side and I can no longer open it up too wide to cycle the locks again (something I wouldn't want to do anyway since that's probably not a good thing to do.) :lightbulb: I'm guessing that there may now be a broken wire (or wires) for both the keylock and sideview mirror switch in the driver’s door. Does anyone know how I can get to them or how to check this? Also, could there be any relationship between these problems and the intermittent problems? Finally - how can I figure out what’s wrong with the clock? :renntech: :thankyou:
  7. Thanks Howard. I will (carefully) give it a shot. :thankyou:
  8. Mikey: When you say that it "works from passenger side...", do you mean that the driver's side door locks okay when you put the key into the passenger side door...or that the passenger side door locks when you use the key in that door? Regards, Maurice. Hi Maurice, thanks for the response. I can lock both doors with the key from the passenger side. If I try it from the drivers side, I get nothing if I turn to the key to the right (to lock) but I can hear a clicking noise when I turn it to the left (to unlock), hence I can unlock the car rfom the drivers door as well (after locking it from the passenger side).
  9. You might have better luck posting in the "911, 912 (1965-1989) Series" forum. Isn't that where this is? It looks like it to me - but maybe I'm missing something? Did I post incorectly and a Mod moved it for me? The breadcrumb says: RennTech.org Forums> Older Model Porsches> 911, 912 (1965-1989) Series> 911, 912> Key Won't Lock From Drivers Dorr I moved this post to the proper forum. Thank you & sorry...

  11. 1985 911 Cab w/manual roof - no key fob - manual key only. 50% of the time you can't lock the car from the drivers side. You hear the click of open/close, but won't lock. Works from passenger side though. Any thoughts?
  12. My first Porsche. My past toys include 1970 Corvette 350/350, 1973 12cyl. Jag E-Type, and 2001 SLK 32AMG. Looking forward to this next chapter.

  13. About 2 years ago, I decided to part with my SLK32 AMG and go Porsche - I guess I decided I actually wanted to "drive" a car, instead of being a passenger behind the wheel. I went to the bookstore and bought "Porsche 911 Buyers Guide" by Randy Leffingwell ISBN 0-7603-0947-7. I poured through it (several times) and over time solidified on the 1985 "F" series. In my opinion, the book was worth 10x the $25 I paid for it. It took me a while to find the right car, but I finally did and in fact, I just picked up my 1985 911 Carrera Cabrio today. What a beautiful car!!! I knew up-front everything that could be seriously wrong with the car and made sure that all the major items were covered. I also did a lot of web research and searching - which is how I found this site as well. If there is any one (solid) piece of advise I could offer, it is - "Don't be in a rush." There are lots of cars out there. Some of them are so beautiful you won't be able to stand it. But please be careful. Make sure you get the car you want, but also make sure it's the right car for you. Don't sacrifice mechanical quality for superior looks. A great interior and paint job won't look or feel great if there are fuel leaks, breather box/engine problems, tracking/handling problems from rust, water or collision. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the process. As a wise man once told me, "the chase is (almost) more fun than the catch".
