  1. Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread. So it seems after I was able to change the AOS, Alternator, vacuum lines, canister, air valves, idle control valve, plugs, coils, tubes, and 02 sensors, when I put everything back together, it seems at the intake plenum boot one of the main vacuum lines on the left side going to the check valve was pinched in between the boot and the intake plenum. This basically caused the vacuum to be completely blocked or choked, and i'm sure was causing a bad air leak as well. It's amazing how important these little tubes are that plug into the intake boots. Any obstruction to these will cause the car to run like total JUNK. I mean I had white smoke coming out, car was sounding like chug, chug, and idle was HORRIBLE. OMG.. after I recentered that little tube and put the throttle body back together, the car came back alive again, and now is purring like a kitten!!! Thanks EVERYONE!!! -Randy
  2. Thanks JFP, I have reason to believe the fuel filter has not been changed ever. I bought the car used a few years ago and never replaced it. Should I start with that based on the fuel pressure being in the 40s? Also forgot to mention I had replaced the oil filler tube also, so I know that doesn't have cracks. Thanks.
  3. Hi 996 Friends, So recently I embarked on fixing some things with my 996. I replaced the AOS (now no smoking and oil filler cap pulls off with no vacuum), replaced vacuum lines, canister, and some switch over air valves, replaced coils and plugs, and replaced alternator. Car ran pretty good for the weekend. Then out of nowhere, I get the codes above, when I get home I turn the car off, and after a few hours turn it on and car starts to sputter, and idle REALLY rough. I know I don't have a vacuum leak, or at least I don't think so, because AOS is new and car ran good for the weekend. When I connected the fuel tester to check fuel pressure, both standing and running fuel pressures were reading 45-48psig. When I pressed the gas with the car idle fuel pressure didn't move much at all. Now, I think this is low? Does anyone know what should be the standing fuel pressure reading and with the car on? For this test I took the airbox out and had the MAF disconnected. What could be some possible causes that are likely culprits, fuel pump? could it be a faulty fuel pressure regulator? Thanks for your insight, -Randy BTW, Car is a '99 with 80K miles. I assume it has the original fuel pump, filter, and anything else fuel related.
  4. Thanks JFP for your insight. Yeah, it took me a little while to understand it. I guess I totally had forgotten about the AOS. Although I'm a DIY fanatic, I called my indie mechanic to get an estimate on what the total damage is going to be. This job may be a little more than I want to handle, especially since I want a warranty on this in case for some reason this goes wrong the first time. . All the symptoms are making perfect sense to pointing tot he AOS. -Randy
  5. So I believe I know what the problem is. I'm getting random idle fluctuations at stops, constant hissing sound from rear bulkhead, oil cap with car on has a rather strong vacuum when I try to remove it, and there is some light white smoke coming out of exhaust when I start car for 5 to 10 mins. I think the AOS is the culprit. No CEL. Thoughts? Thanks.

  7. Hi 996 friends, I have a '99 Cabrio with 79K miles. 4 yrs now. Just recently, I noticed at idle, or at any relative throttle, there is now a rear hissing constant "shhhhhh" noise that I can hear above the normal engine rumble when I'm inside the car. It sounds like it's coming right from the other side of the rear bulkhead. The noise gets progressively louder as the throttle increases. When car shuts off, noise is gone too. The car's performance is unchanged, it is fully responsive in the full throttle range and at idle as it should. The only difference is this new noise that has the same characteristic of like air constantly leaking. The noise is constant and steady, no interrupted lulls or breaks. When I try to hear the sound with the bonnet open and engine running, I can't really pinpoint where it's coming from. I want to say from the middle to right side of the engine. The engine noise from the outside clouds the "shhhh" , so it is most noticeable from the interior of the car with windows rolled up. Also to note, there are no fluid leaks on the car or any other signs that could indicate a problem. The only thing I did this weekend was have the convertible top changed, and when I drove it home from that it was fine. Then on my next trip, I started to notice it. Perhaps coincidence. Anyways, thanks a bunch for any insight as to what the cause of this may be. It surly has me scratching my head!! --Randy

  10. Hi 996 friends. I'm relatively new to the 996 Tiptronic world. I like to drive mine in full auto, without the use of switches. I've searched for threads on this, but found little info. If you know any good driving techniques to really command the transmission please let me know. I'm used to driving manuals, so this is new to me. For example, I've heard of kickdown. It seems if I do a quick one or two pedal presses in succession, this kicks the tyranny into high revs and car takes off. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Seems like I have to master the pedal press technique for quick launches from dead stop. Does just pressing the pedal down once to the floor send the message to the transmission to high tail it, or should I be pressing the pedal a certain way /distance to ensure a hard, fast, acceleration? Just trying to master the tiptronic and sending it the right combination of "commands " through my pedal. Thanks for any insight and driving tips. Randy

  14. Hi 996 friends, Excuse the question, but I am confused as to specs saying fluid capacity is 10 liters or so but only 4 during fluid change. What does this mean? does it mean when it gets drained 10 liters come out or only 4? Thanks for the clarification! I have a 996, 1999 cabriolet, 2wd. Randy
