  1. Hello-- So I got a PST2 clone(Laptop and Bosch KTS card with 20-pin Honda to OBD2 cord) this week— hooked it up to my 1999 986 and tried to change the map in the DME, but I did not see a screen to confirm my VIN, I put the IPAS code in twice and kept getting a message “test step aborted. (47)” My battery works for normal operation but is only at 12.6 volts— I also put it on a charger and tried 2A, 10A, and 40A. Also, the software seems to work in other regards; it picks up all the systems and I can do things like turn fans on, so I assume it's communicating properly. The software works in simulation mode (with the card out). From my understanding and from what I've seen in simulation mode, the software should auto populate your vin and force you to confirm it is correct before changing the map. As for the DME code, I got it once from one dealership over the phone, and now I have the printout from another with all of my IPAS codes— the DME code is the same. Any help would be appreciated.
  2. I have an 03 Boxster with 95k on the clock. When you first start driving the car, everything is tight and quiet. After about 25 - 30 miles, the front start to knock lightly and rumble. Most noticeable between 0 and 30mph in queuing traffic. You can feel the knocks on the steering wheel and brake pedal. The further you go the worse it gets. The sound is like a bolt being jarred in a plastic bottle. Up to now it has had new bake disks and pads. Track rod ends and wishbones replaced and something That looks like coffin struts changed. Wheels and tyres have been checked. When the knocking started, the brake warning light came on. The front sensors have been changed so the warning lights don't come on when the knocking starts. I am not mechanically minded but In my mind its a brake problem as the issue only shows up after driving for about 30 miles and things are starting to warm up. The garage cannot identify the issue and have run out of ideas. Can anyone suggest or identify the problem as I have been replacing bits without success
  3. Hi there! 1st off, thank you for reading this! 2nd, is there a way to add a little more HP? Thx all!
  4. 1999 986 2.5 Boxster. (5 spd) Not many problems with the car but cruise control doesn’t work and the spoiler only extends halfway or so. Current actual problem with the car is that I can feel vibration or shaking in the steering wheel (and in the car to a much lesser extent) after shifting into fourth gear. After shifting into fourth gear, the shaking seems to persist even as I slow down, or after shifting into fifth. It will persist even if I shift into neutral but will stop after I come to a stop. It’s strange to me that this is the case when gears 1-3 don’t have this problem. I am guessing that it’s an issue with bearings or alignment in the front wheels since i’m feeling the vibrations in the wheel but hopefully someone here has a better idea.
  5. I am interested in buying a Boxster with PDK. I used to have a 2004 911 Carrera S which I loved, but the road noise eventually got to me. I miss the exhilaration of driving a Porsche again, and am considering a Boxster for 2 reasons: It is more affordable than a 911, and I have read that it is the quietest of the three _Boxster, Cayman and 911. I see a 2011 Boxster S with PDK, Sport chrono, for about 27k with 84k miles on it. I live in Chicago, the car is in Winston Salem NC. Is there a lister or a reputable shop in Winston NC that can help me out by checking out the car? Is that even advisable?
  6. Tried googeleing it but couldn’t find what I was after. Was curious if anyone knows what type of flat 6 the 986 boxster has? Is it a a true boxer engine? Or a horizontally opposed flat V? True boxer meaning it has individual crank pins for each piston and is a true 180degree angle. Thanks in advance
  7. I'm new to the Porsche family.... Just over a month and the proud owner of a 1999 Boxster. It's a project car but still on the road and my point to point ride. Must say, LOVE to drive this car....This one has been lowered some, well alot... and does it hug the road..... Just doesn't miss much being that low.... My question is, I am having an issue with the rear lights on this car... I know I had a problem with the left rear brake light. I tried tracing back the wire but found no problem... I then switched the lamp holder from the right side to the left and all the lights worked... So I thought I had an equipment issue. I bought a (Porsche) replacement bulb holder. Came in last night. Changed out today...Guess what???? Turn indicators work, Backup lights work, Brake light works on the Right Side ONLY, (still) Now no rear tail lights what so ever......I have checked ALL the fuses, only had to replace one and it had nothing to do with the lights. NOTHING has changed....Where did my tail lights go?????? Can't figure this out.......Please help.......Just FYI, ALL the LIGHTS were working as of last Wed. when I did the bulb holder swap and checking the lights. Power is to both wire harnesses. Everything else works except the left brake light and the drive lights. Go figure.......
  8. Hello- I'm new to this website. Here is a question: I have a 1998 Boxster 2.5 Tiptronic. I just had a new key programmed at dealership ( the old key fob newer worked). With new key fob, all doors (including gas) lock and unlock appropriately. However, when pressing the button to open the rear trunk lid, the lid doesn't move and the rear lock actuator/solenoid is silent. I disconnected the actuator from the car (separating the plastic connector) and using a 9v battery, made the actuator ( and lock) open and close. So I believe the problem is not the actuator. I also connected a volt meter to the two wires that connect from the car to the actuator, then pressed the fob button, and no voltage was recorded. However, the red light on the fob and the red light on the dash near the windshield did light up So i believe the problem lies in the electrical system somewhere between the actuator and the fob. Any ideas on how to test the wiring running from the trunk lock actuator to the CLU? immobilizer? or wherever it goes? Or should I be spending my time evaluating the CLU? immobilizer? ?? Thanks for any advise! /Bend986
  9. I have a 1997 Boxster with 30,000 miles. The battery is charged and the car starts and runs fine. However, I cannot open the hood or trunk with the levers next to the drivers seat when the door is open! When I press the interlock switch on the dash nothing happens. The light stays on. Any ideas??
  10. I am missing the shift knob insert to my Boxster S 6 speed and cannot find a replacement anywhere without having to buy a whole new shifter... Does anyone have one they would like to donate or sale? Or does anyone have any ideas on how to get one. Its just the insert that fits on top of the shifter Reverse through 6th... Or does anyone have any ideas on how to make one? I am at a loss and it looks raty without the insert..... Thanks in Advance!
  11. Boxster 2003 window on passenger side will not drop to open the door with either inside or outside handle. I replaced the micro switch from the outside handle to no effect. Windows drop with unlocking top. Driver door works normally. Inside window switch works with no noises from regulator.
  12. Hi all,I know that there has been a lot of talk regarding fitting rear speakers to a 981 Boxster . I have a 2014 GTS with sound system plus and I am very keen to add speakers behind the seats to fill in the sound. Is there a way of either enabling the fader on the PCM and then wiring the rear speakers to the amplifier under the seat ? Alternatively, connecting the rear speakers with a resistor of 16 ohms in parallel with the front speakers?
  13. I had a bearing/seal failure in my 2003 Boxster w/Tiptronic, and need to replace the torque converter and the oil pump. I have removed the transmission from the car and taken off the pan, filter, torque converter, and the control valves. I have also removed all the bolts from front of the oil pump housing. In online videos, they show two plastic tubes that need to be removed, before the pump will pull out. These were on ZF5HP19 transmissions for BMW and other cars. However, the Tiptronic for our cars, Boxsters, is a ZF5HP19FL. A slightly different monster. When I try to pull on the oil pump, to remove it, it doesn't budge. I don't want to go forcing it, without knowing the proper steps to remove it. Does anyone know the proper steps to remove the oil pump?
  14. Hey everyone! I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this but here’s my problem! So I have two problems both I would love to fix 1. When driving at low speeds (specifically 13 MPH) my engine; or what sounds like my engine, makes an awful grinding/ whining noise. The noise goes away after I switch from first to second. 2. When driving sometimes it makes a similar noise but is seems to happen when the car is cold and specifically during acceleration. Thanks for the help! -Denali
  15. Hello there, this is my first post here and I’m writing because of problem with my boxster. Today in the morning I’ve started my 2002 boxster and noticed strange sounds from the engine/ rear side of the car It’s a metallic, grinding sound like a loose piece of metal or something like that Sound disappears when you press gas and comes back once you loose the pedal, I don’t know if it changes while engine is warm Also, check engine light shown up yesterday, when I connected my BT OBD2 there was no error code. I came with that to workshop also, and they said it’s a catalyst efficiency error. I’ve had that error code a while ago, I’ve replaced mass air flow meter and check engine light disappeared. I think it might be a problem with maf again because I bought not the cheaper, not the original one, but why are there these strange sounds? I’m worried about this. Could it be catalyst this time? Or again should I replace maf? This time I’ll buy original one. here are two Videos I made Also I’m sorry if you can’t understand something, my english is not perfect. Thank you for all replies, I hope we will solve that problem together
  16. I just bought a 2002 Boxster with the Carbon Interior convertible. The radio went dead and I need to retrieve the code. Can you folks help me? Here are the specs. Becker 1 Type 4462 Serial # 25013601 24/99 Car Vin # WP0CA29842U6253320
  17. I have a 2002 Boxster that enjoys dumping the entire contents of the engine coolant on a regular basis. The entire coolant tank seems to be dumped from the emergency overflow whenever this happens. No warning lights appear on the dash either before or after this occurs. The dump happens only when I turn the engine off after driving. After turning the engine off I hear rapid running liquid coming out of the back of the car, and can see the coolant fluid flooding over the pavement. It completely empties the tank and takes about 30 seconds. There does not appear to be a leak in the system. The first time it happened I called roadside assistance they pressure tested the tank without issue. I subsequently took it to a garage which also pressure tested the tank and did not find an issue. The level does not gradually decline: it is either fine or it dumps the whole thing on power-down. A few months ago the car started dumping the coolant very frequently (almost every time I drove). I took it back to the garage which decided to replace the coolant overflow reservoir which apparently had a crack. This seemed to improve the situation, but in the last few weeks the problem has returned and the coolant is dumped after most trips when I turn-off the engine. The engine temperature shown on the dash is normal, no warning-lights come on, and the fans work normally. At least one of the times this has happened in the past I did not notice it immediately and ended up driving around for some time before realising there was no coolant. I have owned the car for about 2 years, and the issue first occurred about a year ago. Has anyone come across this before? I don't really want to take the car back to the garage for them to do yet another random "fix", charge me a fortune and not actually address the problem.
  18. Having an issue with the heater in my 2000 Boxster S. It fogs up the windows when the heater is on. If I turn the AC button on the fog stops but the air temperature is no longer hot or warm even. The moisture coming out seems to have an odd smell to it. It's either old nasty water or perhaps antifreeze. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  19. Hey guys, I have 2000 Boxster S thats been sitting for months now because it has a rod bearing issue. I found a running 2.5 for cheap becuase its a family friend. I wanted to know what would be needed to do a swap like that? Would it be harder or simple. Im thinking the DME would need to be remapped. Or is it better to sell the car as is? Im trying to empty out the garage so whichever would be faster.
  20. Hi All My first post here so please bear with me but pretty desperate for help. Have 2004 Boxster S and its, in general, running a bit rough (feels fuel rich). It also will also, on occasion, not go. Pulling up at a busy intersection and car reduces to Idle. Then put the foot down and the car stays at idle. Normally an engine restart gets things going again (although not always and sometimes requires a few goes). Bought a computer reader and found error codes P0102: Factory Fault code 115 - Mass air flow sensor - below limit P2135: Accelerator Pedal - Signal Implausible P0121: Factor Fault code 117 - Throttle value or accelerator pedal potentiometer - signal implausible P1266: Factory Fault Code 409 - Fuel shutoff function monitor - signal implausible Took the car to Porsche. They suggest a MAF sensor was the root cause and replaced it. It felt better for a few days then problem returned. They replaced another MAF sensor.. Same problem. They then said the MAF reads 0 and have checked the cables so its me DME and it needs replacing (not cheap) Have taken the car back home and looked at the likely affecting values myself from the computer. 1. MAF. The computer shows to different values for MAF Mass air flow (HFM) is always 0 regardless of if the car is working correctly or not and at any accelerator level Mass air flow seems to move within a range of 18 (idle) to 100 (full throttle) 2. Throttle (since it had error codes on this) Pedal encoder potentiometer 1 and 2 always move and the pedal value goes from 0-100% when its working but stays at 0 when its not. Since the potentiometers always move I am assuming the DME simply can't add things up so sticks the pedal value at 0. ie. The MAF sensor reading above confuses the DME and it reduces the throttle to 0. That feel consistent with the behaviour of the car (its just sticks at idle) Any one with any clues? Certainly don't want to replace the DME unless absolutely necessary.... HELP?
  21. Hi guys, Has anyone tried to remove the gas tank? The straps are off but I am unable to drop the tank. Can this be done without having to tinker with the steering column? Thanks in Advance. Year: 2002 Model: Boxster S Miles: 65000 Transmission: Tiptonic
  22. I have a 2000 Boxster. Recently the horn is very sensitive and sounds with the slightest of pressure. Today when breaking hard the horn sounded. Any ideas of the cause? Also, does anyone know which fuse supports the horn? I want to be prepared to deactivate it if it gets stuck on. Thanks.
  23. I recently had a dead battery in my 2007 Boxster with PCM (no bose). Once the car charged everything seemed fine. The Navigator and CD work perfectly. However, the radio will only pick up stations when it is in accessory mode. Here is how it goes: Car running - no reception; turn off motor; 1-4-8 reboot; radio works fine. Turn on motor - 4 seconds later the radio no longer picks up stations (static). However SOMETIMES one station will come it. I did the MAIN-TRIP diagnostics and it showed ! PCM; ! SOFTWARE; Ck Navigator. I took it into the shop today and they ran some diagnostics and said that it showed nothing wrong. The dealer said that I would have to get a replacement PCM and then quoted a price in 4K range. Has anybody seen this type of problem before, and if so is there a solution? Also if I have to replace the PCM are there less costly options than 4K. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.
  24. I have an issue with my 2010 Boxster S 6-speed that I can duplicate. It throws code 7103, "crankshaft sensor upper limit value exceeded". Normally, there are no issues and the car never throws the code during driving short or long trips. But one day I decided to rev it out to the limiter... it felt like it hit a hard limiter somewhere around 7000 rpm (wasn't in sport mode, so I thought it should be a soft limit at around 7400-7600 rpm). Then the dash said "reduced power". I drove it a but further and it threw a PSM error and then would barely even roll away from a stoplight. However, cycling the ignition cleared the PSM error. Anyway, I can duplicate the error consistently by revving it out near redline, and so long as I cycle the ignition shortly afterwards, there is never a PSM error. So I believe the PSM error is spurious, and a result of whatever is causing the crankshaft signal error. I have two ideas for what might be causing it: 1. Bad/old flywheel. But there are no other symptoms. 2. Bad crankshaft sensor. But again, there are no other symptoms. I searched and couldn't find anyone else mentioning this issue, so I thought I'd ask here before going off and buying a new sensor (9A160611201 only about $80, so not too bad). Any ideas? TIA.
  25. Is anyone familiar with the one-piece LED replacement headlights for the 986 Boxster. There are a number of them available on eBay from a variety of vendors, including xtrememotorcars and MK AUTOWORLD. They claim to be a simple, no modification, swap. I'm skeptical, but if it works, it would be an affordable and good-looking replacement solution.
