  1. I committed the fatal sin with my Boxster and did not clean out the drains since this time last year and was punished by the drains clogging up and flooding the interior of the car. The result was a very wet body control unit, all the rear lights illuminated and once I got into the car it decided to start moving the roof on its own and broke the plastic ball ends off two of the roof (soft top) arms on the roof transmissions.... So, as I have a durametric, I decided to buy a new body control unit, and coded it up as best as I can and replaced both the arms with the plastic ball ends. Everything seems to be fine and working great, except for one, minor and confusing feature.. The clam shell at the back of the roof comes down properly when you put the roof down, but does not come down completely when you put the roof up! I have tried adjusting everything which can be adjusted, I have spent days going through the forums searching for a similar problem, and I have even taken the roof transmissions off and inspected them and figured out how they work. The transmissions run until they hit the two microswitches inside the transmissions, which also seem to be working properly Nothing seems bent, other than the ends of the rods going to the clamshell, which seem to be bent from the factory. On my old boxster (986) I once had a problem getting the roof to work properly and noticed on that on that car when the roof was all the way forward, a microswitch above the door pillar would be made and then the roof seemed to run for a couple more seconds to finish closing things and put everything under tension, on this 987 the motors stop the instant they hit the microswitches in the transmissions,,, Is this right? The other odd thing, the durametric seems to be able to code the rear control unit, and I can change coding and see the effects, but if I try to read or clear fault codes in the rear unit it just sits there forever trying to connect... Is this normal, or an indication of a seperate or connected fault? Occasionally the Gateway and other systems are reporting being unable to communicate with the rear control unit also... Which is odd.. How can I be coding it via its communication system, but not able to talk to it for fault codes? Anyway, I would have put up two problems here seperately (Clamshell not closing and communication errors) but thought it might be best to give you guys the full picture! ... HELP!!!
  2. Hi guys, Newbie to the forum here. I have a 2002 996 C2 Cab new to me and been enjoying it since I got it 2 years ago. Mostly trouble free until two weeks ago when the cab top started to acting up and then quit all together. I had to do the emergency manual procedure, after checking all the obvious stuff (i.e. fuses, relays, micro-switches all tested and works). I started taking the mechanism apart, checked, cleaned and lubed everything, put it back together, run the calibration (Durametric), things start to work again wonderfully (or so I thought). The clam-shell lid started to hesitating and eventually got stuck halfway. I had to do the manual emergency operation again. Durametric gave a timeout error, the problem seems to be the clam-shell lid. Removed the motor and turned the mechanism manually it moves smoothly. Removed the lid motor by connecting it directly to the AC battery it's humming but the gear seems to turn hesitantly. So I took the motor apart and I found out that the plastic gear got chewed on one area (see attached pictures) where the worm gear rotating. I tried to rebuild the gear teeth by using JB Weld (and all kinds of epoxies brands and types), it's always working for a while and then same thing at the same area got chewed again. I guess it's not strong enough to hold the metal turning screw. My question now is, do I need to bite the bullet and get a new motor or do you guys have any recommendation if I can get this gear fix or custom made obviously within reasonable price (scratch that I just check with a CNC machine company it will cost roughly $300-$400). The price of a new motor is around 600 dollars at Sunset Porsche, a used one at eBay maybe around 300 - 400 dollars with the whole mechanism (which I don't need). Any suggestion is appreciate it. -Andre
  3. All of a sudden my top is not sitting flush with the body when the roof is open The light goes out indicating that the car thinks the top is all the way down. The clamshell goes down evenly, not askew. The front is aligned correctly, but the back of the clamshell just sits proud of the bodywork by maybe 1/2". Enough that it's visibly not fully closed when seen in my rear view mirror. I cycled the top up (works fine) and down (same problem). Had someone try to help it down that last little bit, to no avail. No unusual noise when operating the top Any thoughts on what's wrong and how to correct it. No recent work has been done on the top, but it is a milder version of what I saw when I had the immobilizer replaced (2 years ago for water intrusion) and the Porsche dealer failed to fit the top back on properly.   4. Hi All, I'm new to the forum here. I have a 1998 Boxster which had been lovely to me until recently when I began experiencing issues with the top. Same story, different time... one of the cables broke, didn't realize it, something got bent. Don't know what. So.. I've disconnected the front arms from the convertible top, and also taken the push rods off of the clamshell so that I can operate it manually. Even with the clamshell operating manually, the clamshell sits ~1-2" too high on the right hand side, and must be forced down! Please don't say the transmissions are not in sync, as this is without even hooking up the transmissions! I have already replaced the guide arms on both sides as well as the clamshell slides. Is it really possible that the clamshell itself bent? I have already tried loosening all of the bolts that hold the clamshell to the guidearms, and even with shifting that the situation does not improve. The eccentrics on the sliding rails only slightly help it. Can anyone please help? The vehicle has been down for two months as I try and get to the bottom of this.
  5. I have a US spec 1999 C2 cabriolet. A few weeks back when trying to close the top the clamshell would not open. It was stuck on the left hand side. After several failed attempts I sought the help of this forum. The clamshell is held firmly in place by three latches. A clip holding the latch on the left side had fallen off and hence the latch was stuck. I was able to loosen the latch and open the clamshell using the emergency crank behind the rear seats. Miraculously I found the little clip and got the latch fastened as well. So far, so good, but the clamshell is not closing or opening. I have taken out the drive motor and it is turning fine. Oddly the shaft off the motor is totally smooth and it fits into what appears to be a gear with teeth that drives the clamshell opening mechanism. I cannot understand how the motor can get any grip. Is there a clutch mechanism of some sort? Does anyone have any experience with this problem??
