  1. Greetings - I have traced a coolant leak to the rear of the alternator - wondering if anyone else has seen this and whether its repairable or I just have to commit to replacing it (once I can find a replacement - they seem to be rather hard to find at the moment).... Cheers.
  2. At first I thought the water pump was leaking, but with careful examination, discovered the plastic "Water Guide Housing" (P/N 987-106-508-04) used to route coolant from the front of the engine to the front radiators, sprung a rather large leak at the mold seam on the bottom of the part near where it makes a 90 degree bend and joins the "Henn" fitting on the large rubber hose. I removed the 9 screws attaching the housing to the engine, and have a new replacement part, but can't figure out how to get it out, because it snakes around the front engine mount, which looks very difficult to remove. It looks like it would remove straight down if the mount wasn't in the way, and maybe it could be removed and replaced from the top side, but that's very tight with pulleys. There must be a way to get this part out without removing the engine? This is not a commonly replaced part- the parts guy at the dealer said he has only sold one of these in several years, and I see no mention of replacing it in the 5000 page factory workshop manual or anywhere on the internet. Does anyone have experience with replacing this part with the engine in the car? I would appreciate any insight, and would even pay for a solution. I would like to get the car back on the road. Summer is very short here in Minnesota. Gary
  3. My 2004 Carrera coupe has developed a leak. It started after I flushed my cooling system. Rather sure it is around the AOS/associated lines. I've read various opinions about the difficulty of removing the AOS. But what I am interested in doing is just replacing those lines. Any experience or opinions on doing this? Specifically, is it even possible? Especially if this can be done without removing the intake manifold? Also I am only finding the upper oil separator coolant hose. What about the second one?
  4. Hi there, new to the forum and new to Boxster 986 (2months). I recently discovered that my Boxster is leaking coolant, it all started when I parked it for like 5 hours in a slanted spot with the weight going towards the driver side, came back to go back home and noticed a big mark of coolant under the car. Once I got home I checked the water pump and thermostat area and that’s all dry and no bad signs on the pump at all (there were changed by previews owner about 3 years ago) also not a bad reservoir tank, it’s all dry under the carpet and removed the lid to see the release valve and everything is dry in there too. With further inspection under the car it seems like it’s coming from top of the engine and way back away from water pump. I went on top the engine and saw a little puddle of coolant (pink) sitting on top of the engine (car was running at running temp) vacuumed it to see any new leaks and couldn’t see anything leaking anymore. My question is are there any hoses or anymore coolant system parts under the throttle body that I should be aware of? That was May 12, I’ve been keeping an eye under the car, and coolant level and can’t see anything leaking under the car anymore. I’m assuming the small leak on top the engine gets burnt off and doesn’t make it down. Car is running perfectly, not overheating or flashing temp light. I’m very skilled and comfortable working in the car but since I’m new to it I would like to know what I’m getting into. Sorry for the long post
  5. I am looking for some help with regards to a coolant leak. I got a red blinking temperature gauge warning. The 996 overheated. The coolant leak is on the top of the engine near where the transmission and the block bolt together. The leak appears to dominate towards the passenger side of the 996. When I start the 996, coolant streams out from the area as I mentioned. Reference graphic for a better picture. Has anyone experienced this same leak or is familiar with what would cause this leak? Durametric does not give any faults or warnings. Any Ideas? Thanks, Ken
  6. While changing my oil yesterday, I noticed what looks likes coolant "weeping" (no drip yet) from this engine block plate located on the passenger side toward the front of the car. I have not yet noticed any loss in my coolant tank level. However, I'm thinking it is only a matter of time. So, if I am correct, this part is referenced in the parts catalogue as simply a "lid" but there is a gasket here which I should replace with the Porsche part number 996-101-336-50, and I will need to flush/replace the entire coolant system in the process. My coolant had been replaced by a previous owner with greenish-yellow stuff which seems to have worked very well. I didn't notice at the time but it looks like my "hose holder" is also either open or broken and may also need replacing. MY QUESTION: Is this a typical situation (normal wear) on a 2002-C2, with 67,400 miles? Or, should I be looking for any other causes or symptoms of a bigger problem? Thanks.
  7. I have a 2003 996 Carrera cab. When I got to work this morning I noticed coolant flowing from rear of engine compartment. The temp gauge never peaked, and none of the idiot lights came on. Any ideas on what this problem is would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance
  8. My 955 turbo has consumed nearly 10L of coolant in the past 40 days. No apparent exterior leak (haven't opened up engine covers yet). White smoke exhaust upon cool-cold start up, tubes are done. Cooling system seems pressurized when I open reservoir cap. Apart from head gasket potential are there any other possibilities? Through intake somehow? Through turbos? Doesn't overheat. Help please
  9. I am trying to locate a coolant leak on my '99 996. It is leaking pretty significantly near the rear of the engine (by the timing chain cover, closest to the rear seats), somewhere up here: I have ruled out the expansion tank; I disconnected a few pipes and was able to run my hand all along the back of it and it came back bone dry. Meanwhile I can see rivulets of coolant running down the rear of the engine. I put the car up on jackstands, but visibility up there is extremely limited. I unfortunately do not have access to a lift. I was wondering if there was any way to diagnose/resolve the issue without having to drop the engine. I appreciate any insight into this. Also, I noticed several coolant hoses that disappear into oblivion back there. Where do these hoses connect to on the other side, and is there a way to check these connections?
  10. I know this is a topic often reviewed here on the forum but I was looking for a little more help prior to just letting my local mechanic ream me for a few thousand dollars. Use the forum often, rarely (if ever) post, but have been far more active on equivalent sites for cars I've owned in past (Audi/BMW/etc)... Have an 04 Cay S, 87k miles, owner for past 16 months, probably drive 1200-1500mi/month. About 2 months ago, in traffic temp gauge went above 220 - i know it is very common for it to fluctuate in that 180-220 range but this was first ever time it went beyond. Was home about 1 mile later with no real issue. The next morning I got the "check coolant level" message, figured I could get to my mechanic 20 miles away and about 17 miles of the way there, got stuck in a little morning traffic and it quickly overheated, I sort of saw it coming so immediately pulled over and turned it off and waited for AAA. Shop replaced the water pump, coolant pipes (from the old plastic ones), flushed the coolant, etc. and for about 6 weeks all ran smooth, and even with being in some traffic never got past 180-190 temp wise. Over past 7 days its quickly become worse and is willing to fluctuate above 180 pretty quickly and certainly smells like coolant once parked. I have added to prior threads - 1) http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/42289-coolant-smell-always-evrything-replaced/ - in posting #7, does anyone know what the part is in the bottom right of the diagram? almost looks like a filter? that is leaking - what part is that and is it a major reason for conern? 2) http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/42643-ac-dryer-2004-cs/ - does this user's issue correlate to me at all? Thanks for your help!
  11. Need help here. My 2000 996 coupe RWD, 6MT has a weird coolant drip issue that seems to heal itself. Last week after taking the car out for a brief run, I noticed a coolant drip hitting the dirver side exhaust tip. Knowing that this is the prime indicator of a coolant tank issue, I took the car over to my techs. The car cooled down, and showed NO signs of a leak anywhere? After a visual and finally a pressure test of the system, we came to the conclusion that the cap was the problem ( old cap ending in 00 ). We got a new cap the following day, topped off the tank, re checked and went on to other things on the squawk list. Today, after bringing her back out for another fun run, I again noticed a coolant leak, somewhat more pronounced coming down from just behind the driver side rear wheel inside housing. ( spot was about a foot in diameter, meaning maybe a cup of coolant leak? ). So again, I cooled the car down, and amazingly, no more leak? The temp guage sits spliting the 8/0 always and had only moved to splitting the 0 on the way back home. I pulled the cap and the tank is flush full of nice green coolant. I'm perplexed at this point. I live in Florida, so heat is always a concern, but our temps right now are really mild and the car isn't showing any typical signs of stress from the usual culprits? Help always appreciated. Yes, I know search is my friend, but this issue is just weird.
  12. Boxster-mates, I need your insights here. On the drive back this evening - 111F in Phoenix - the AC cooling was low. I also felt a bit of squeal coming from the behind the dashboard when the compressor was running - a mechanical-ish squeal. The engine temperature was near high 190s. After I parked the car, noticed the green coolant spots - not many or large - two or so (I've attached some photos). Some history on the replacements so far, 1) 7/2009 - AC compressor was replaced 2) 7/2011 - Cracked coolant reservoir was replaced. I don't see any coolant under the tank (as in attached photo). Is my compressor again coming in for a replacement? What is the connection with the drops of coolant? Please help  Thank you, Soaking-in-Phoenix
  13. Alright, 2 weeks ago I bought an '03 996 Cabriolet from a physician friend of mine... After driving it for two weeks I noticed a large puddle of coolant on the garage floor. The coolant leak was coming from the back drivers side of the engine (pics to follow) After researching this topic thoroughly over the weekend I am confident that I can execute his repair myself... But first, let me stress to everyone that I AM NOT A MECHANIC, nor have I ever attempted any "mechanics" except for oil & filter changes. There are some really great write-ups that gave me the confidence and know-how to tackle this job. I'll be sure to give credit where it is due when this proj is complete... About the only thing I didn't find was a video documenting the process step-by-step so I figured this would be an excellent opportunity to make one and provide it to our forum community. Here it goes... Step-by-step diy video instructions soon to follow!!!!
