What are the hard problems with an '87 928 S4 (thinking of getting

Hi. Already have a 2000 996. 'been working on cars myself for a while. What are the big known issues with a 928 S4 (say model year 1987)? For example, how easy is it to change things like the timing belt?

Any advice is appreciated.

These cars are getting old, and the parts are getting more scarce as the days go by. 928's have a huge cult following but i shudder everytime I have to work on one..

Timing belts are highly labour intensive, but if I remember correctly you dont really need any porsche specific special tools to do it.

Ive come across lots of electrical issues near the fuse panel and a variety of oil leaks in the past

There are some very good parts suppliers than can get just about anything you need for a 928. They are wonderful cars. I'll never sell mine. But, you really need to be one (like you sound like you are given your post) who is willing to do much of your own work on the car. Unless, that is, you live in an area that happens to have a mechanic that specializes in 928s. As mentioned above, there is a large group of 928 owners and the number of DIY write-ups are growing. For example, there are excellent write-ups with pics for the timing belt and associated while you are at it jobs on the net.

I think the Rennlist.com 928 forum is on of the most active forums around as a former owner (and who knows maybe a future owner) I like to follow it. I only wish that such forums existed for the 18 years that I drove 928's.
