Coolant Level

Recommended Posts

....just recently acquired my first porsche (2010 Boxster).  I have checked the coolant level and it appears to be below the min. level. (I can not view the actual bottle to confirm the actual level) However, I have just learned that you must use antifreeze authorized by Porsche. The temp gage appears to be Ok and sits in the middle.  Should I be concerned that the level has dropped?  There is no indication that there is a leak i.e. garage floor or distinct odor. I am approx. 60 miles away from the closest dealer, should I be topping the coolant up with reg. anti-freeze in the event of over heating on the hwy?

In an emergency, use distilled water to top up. Then balance up using a mix of Porsche (or Porsche compatible) coolant and distilled water. Under normal circumstances, that would be an equal mix. You must use a coolant that is compatible with that already in your system.

Check under the carpet where the coolant reservoir is located to ensure that it's dry and that the reservoir cap is firmly screwed down.

The car holds over 6 gallons of coolant. Topping up with distilled water, is just fine. Don't worry. In emergency, you could get away with a quality bottled water from the gas station or convenience store. Never tap water. And only Porsche compatible coolant, bought from Porsche, or even VW or Audi if you want to save a little $.
