I recently changed my transmission with a used one I bought online. 

 

After picking up from the shop which was about 2 hours away the truck drove fine while on highway but once i got off the highway and came to a stop the truck wouldn't accelerate. I hit the gas and for about 3-5 seconds it didn't go anywhere and then all of a sudden it kicked in to gear. When i drive it with the tip-tronic it seems to be fine until I come to a a complete stop. 

 

I read on a different forum that someone was having the same issue and got some software updated but unfortunately doesn't say what the update was and it's a post from 2013. 

 

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I really like this car i purchased a couple months ago.

going with the assumption it's not the low fluid and it's a trans adaptation, what would need to be done for something like that? I don't want to think of the worse scenario just yet

Invest in a durametric scan tool. Can easily be reset through that.  Useful  for a number of things if you're the diy type. Or find an Indy with a piwis or the dealership. But an hour at the dealer pretty much equivalent to the cost of a durametric... Good luck. Let us know how it pans out. -Matt

 

Side note: if the trans does in fact need an  update , a durametric cannot apply firmware...

I would take it back to get the fluid level checked asap.

 

edit: Was anything relating to the fluid checked upon installation? Fluid/filter change, level check, even just a fluid color check?

It was a used transmission and the transmission oil filter and gasket was the only thing changed. The level of the oil was checked while monitoring the temperature

The first thing that pops into my head when a trans "slips" (no movement) then "bangs" into gear is old/dirty fluid and/or low fluid. Changing fluid only removes a percentage of the old, which is why I asked about if the old fluid was checked for color to see if maybe it was burnt.

 

When that's not the case, then maybe a valve body issue, or electrical, or maybe vacuum. I echo getting a Durametric, it's very useful.

 

I'm curious if this problem can be diagnosed with some exercises and observations . . .

While the car is standing with the brakes engaged - in Park, Neutral, and Drive, at what rpm does the engine idle? 

Does this issue manifest when rpm -while stopped - is above or below 1000rpm?

While brake is engaged can you feel the car wanting to move if you press the throttle a little?

Was the car ever able to creep at idle with the original trans?

If you rev the engine a little while in Neutral, then immediately upon returning to idle shift into Drive, does problem remain? or does Drive engage?

While driving, when coming to a stop can it be down-shifted Manually into 1st and then operate normally?

While in Drive, stopped, shift into Manual and 1st gear, does it thump?

When i first bought the used transmission i immediately removed the cover and the oil was not dirty at all, it was actually still pretty red. The oil was dumped out and i installed a new filter and gasket. Took the truck to the mechanic and he did say the oil in the old transmission was really dirty. 

 

I actually took the Cayenne to a Porsche dealer here in Downtown LA to see if they can manage to figure out what the issue is. 

 

In the morning when i would start the car it would have no problem when i step on the gas, once I was driving it when i would come to a complete stop at the light i would then try to step on gas and it wouldn't go anywhere. Once you hold the gas at about 1.5-2 RPM it would start to go. There was times i tried to leave it drive to see if it would just move after several seconds but it didn't. It does the same thing when I use the Tip-Tronic. Once the car starts moving there is no problem with the car accelerating and stay in gears. 

 

I do remember on one occasion i was on some incline and the car started rolling back.

I ran into a somewhat similar situation where the car was not moving at all after changing transmission oil and filter due to filter rubber ring not placed correctly.  The ring may break if you put it on the filter nose before installing it instead of placing it inside the hole where the filter nose goes in.

Actually, this brings up another question. When you were on the incline, I assume you came to a stop first?? If so, did the vehicle roll back immediately or did the HOLD (called Standstill, also known as hill-hold) function hold the vehicle briefly then let go allowing the roll back?

 

This is a shot in the dark on this one, but is the parking brake totally and completely disengaged? If so, I would think the HOLD feature would work.

 

When the vehicle rolls back, do any CAUTION or WARNING lights illuminate on the dash? They should if this system is operational and it senses malfunction. Maybe test on a very slight incline to verify.

 

It would help to know your vehicle's year, and trans.
