Nice car but it the price right?

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas,

I recently learned there is a 955 Cayenne Turbo S for sale here in DE. It has full TechArt Magnum kit and tune. It seems the only non stock interior part is a steering wheel but I'm not sure. Also I think it has only tuned ECU, but not upgraded turbos etc. I know Techart can do more besides just a ECU tune. I noticed it's not moving and Cargurus says "it's selling slowly". Even when they dropped the price to 31K it's not moving. I see that ALL other 2006 Turbo S Cayennes w/o such kit  are sold for WAY less. It's hard for me to estimate the right price since probably it's the only Techart Cayenne being sold in the US at this moment. Even Autotrader doesn't return anything when you enter keyword Techart or Magnum. In other words there is not enough offers to estimate the right market value. So I wonder what should be the right price for this one?

I'm interested in the car though I'm waiting for some clarification from their service dept regarding typical 955 flows like bore scoring, cooling parts, driveshaft etc. I asked them if they can perform an endoscope test because the last thing I want to do is to buy this car and later learn it has bore scoring issue. Buying a new cylinder blocks, pistons etc is CRAZY expensive. I know it's probably better to sleeve it but it seems nobody wants to rebuild the Cayenne engine here in DE. I called 2 independent Porsche shops with such question and both shops refused to re-build such engine. This is not good since I was trying to imagine what should I do if (or when) I get that famous bore scoring issue. Also according to a sales person it was driven by the owner of the company (that family owns multiple dealerships) and I was able to look at some recent service history and found that owner recently asked to replace steering wheel, repaint front grille into silver, add signs (you can see that Cayenne Turbo and Magnum signs are missing or in other words car is de-badged ) and install other plastic parts. I have no idea how car looked before all that stuff was done. I did a test drive though I didn't floor it. It sounds OK and drives OK. Has multiple tiny scratches on the body and on the steering wheel buttons (though steering wheel was replaced the buttons were not replaced). Didn't notice any rust or visible leaks. Obviously it's a 2006 car and it shows signs of wear here and there but overall car looks fine to me. I didn't see it underneath though. Also they claimed it's only due for an oil change at this moment and said the car is mechanically and electrically fine. Here is the link:

So what do you think?

P.s.: I'm not affiliated with that dealer or any of their people. I just live in DE close to that dealership and I like how the car looks in Techart body kit.

TIA!

My opinion for what its worth.  I think they are about 8k -10k too high.   You could by a prefect 06 low miles turbo for 20K and do what you want to it and come out less.

The history of 5 owners would bother me.

I agree with you: low miles, good service history and few (like 1 or 2) owners is more important than any body kit and ECU tune. At least you can always get a body kit and a tune later but you definitely can't roll back the time if the car already has more miles and more owners.

It's not selling because the value is between $15k and $20k.  For reference, I purchased my 2006 Cayenne Turbo 3 years ago with 95,000 miles on it.  It has all of these same option and has the panoramic sunroof and roof transport system as well as the coolant pipe upgrade for $11k.  Mine is a 3 owner.  If you do proceed, make sure that the coolant pipes have been upgraded from the plastic to the metal.  The plastic will fail and strand you.

I submitted my offer yesterday.  They didn't reply yet. But if they don't replys I won't worry. Spoke with different people on different forums. Fortunately TechArt sells kits which can be installed on any Cayenne. I guess I could also wait till 2nd gen facelifted Cayenne (2014 and later) will drop in price, then get the right car and get the full kit from TechArt. The 3rd gen just released so the price for these early ones AND 2nd gen Cayennes will only continue to go south.

Before I bought my '04 this summer...  I made 3 offers on others, all of which were overprice in my opinion, all 3 phoned me back within 48 hours reducing their offer... ran into other issue with each (hidden damage on 2nd inspection, etc... )  but hold tight you might be surprised.

See if you can figure out what the most important thing to them is in the negotiation... getting rid of stale inventory,  price,  avoiding auction hassles and fees... and see if you can make that work to your advantage... you give they give... and hopefully what you give up is less important to you then it is to them.
