And.......not drain oil from Turbos?

So is there a requirement to drain the turbos of oil??

Any DIY I've seen (and any reference to shop manual I've read) has included that.

I believe that if it has a drain plug and there is access, one should use it. It is a source of burned engine oil that I would think should be changed out. Also you can monitor the health of the bearings during the draining of the turbos. I recently purchased a set of Magnet tipped turbocharger drain plugs on ebay...

Does anyone have a diagram showing where the turbo drain plugs are located? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

I overlooked the draining of oil from the oil filter housing by suction....how much oil is really left in the filter housing??? Couldn't be much judging by the syringe depicted in the DIY drawing....I do, however, drain the turbos, but buy the crush ring for reinstallation of the plug.

I usually do this after I warm the engine up a bit...not hot, just a bit so you don't have to wait so long for the turbos to cool down.

Did it as per requirement on this DIY and also the other recommendation from you folks and it make my life a lot easier. I did the four points. Turbos (2), crankcase, tank. But I have to admit I did a mess. I was not ready for the high presssure flow coming out of the tank after removing the plug... Little mess in my driveway... Thanks for your help.

How do you fill the turbos "case" back with the new oil? Or is the oil distributed there once you fill it up from the "main" oil fill resevoir up top?

Thanks,

GV

I wouldn't worry about it - it will get there in a few seconds.

Found the answer to my question. Apparently, "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion", page 114, is wrong when it says:

Clean and reinstall the turbocharger oil container drain plugs with new sealing rings and torque to 70Nm (52lb-ft).

It should be 22 lb-ft as anikzad mentioned.

My local dealer said there was 2 filters when changing oil, one located at the oil cooler. They wanted another $20 to change it. Does this make sense?

993 series cars have two oil filters -- 996 series cars have one.

Perhaps he misunderstood...

Changed my oil today and while draining the turbo cases I found one of the washers to be missing. Put the car back together without the one washer and filled the engine with oil. Later found the washer in the oil pan. Doh! I ordered enough of these washers 900-123-140-30-M17 to last me a few years.

My question is can I just empty the turbo cases and install the two new washers without going through the whole oil change? Or should I just wait 5k miles and refresh them at that time?

Hello.. I have a 2005 996TT and had changed the oil and added what seemed to be an extra quart due to not draining the turbos. Upon start up it was smoking. I then drained the amount out so that the level was correct by the gauge. I have not driven it for any period of time since the drain of the excess oil and it is still smoking. Is there any other area that can be drained out or just let it burn off?

Doesn't make sense to me. The procedure as discussed (Drain Crankcase/Oil Reservoir/Turbochargers/oil filter housing, Replace drain plugs with new sealing rings, replace filter with both O-rings (Little and Big), refill with approved oil) is all that is described in the Factory service manual. Not sure where your dealer derives the requirement...I can PDF you the pages from the manual if you want to question your dealer...

Where do you buy the little o ring inside the filter housing?? The new filter doesn't come with the small o ring.

Thanks
