Well, it's going to be a bit tricky. You will need to remove the visor to an area where you can work on it - just pull to slide it off the mounting rod.

Then remove the light cover (pic 1). The with two butter knives carefully pry the holding tray out (pic 2 - but hinges are on the other side of the tray). Now you will be able to see the plastic hinges (even on the leather visors). if you are lucky one of the spring clips is off or broken. If not the one of the plastic hinge pins may be broken (that was my case). If so, your choices are to buy a new (or used visor) or do what I did and use a dremel tool to carefully drill out the old plastic pin and replace it with a steel pin (made from a large paperclip and epoxied into place). Just use the epoxy sparingly as you need this move easily.

Mine ended up as good as new and you don't see the pin so who would know - and it's likely stronger than the original ;)

I opened it up and the spring clips receptacles are the culprit. They're both cracked, so I have epoxied them along with the clips. I am crossing my fingers that i built up enough epoxy that it will reinforce them enough so they can bear the stress again, but I am not all that confident. We'll see.

BTW it was a PITO to get the main part out!

thanks again. Sean

well I should have bent them before I glued them back in they are still not quite right. I guess I could pull them out again bend them and then epoxy them back again. I am sort of over it. Is there a place where I could pick up a passenger one for cheap? thanks. Sean

I was able to tinker with a couple of designs to fix it, and here is what I found:

1. Used a wall picture hanger and bent it u-shape, replaced the original factory spring. It worked, but still not satisfied. I needed a piece of spring steel.

2. Found a piece of spring steel right in my pocket! The steel holder for my $0.99 pen! I removed the clip from the pen, bent it u-shape, and placed it where the original was. post-4600-1112471636_thumb.jpg

3. When reassembling the mirror back cover, let the spring be pushed forward by the sun visor itselfpost-4600-1112471755_thumb.jpg

4. Then replace the mirror back, making sure the small indentation on the mirror allows the spring clip to pass through.post-4600-1112471816_thumb.jpg

It worked perfectly and holds the mirror cover at 90 degrees. I have open and closed it a few hundred (yes, counted them) times, and it is perfect. See the pictures below. I have more pictures but used my alloted space. E-mail me if you have any questions and can send more pics. Good luck

Izzy

Hi Loren,

On my sun visor mirror the lid hinge broke and I was

wondering since you can only buy the whole

assembly, if I purchased a sun visor mirror with no

light will the non-lighted lid fit to replace the broken lid?

$88. for lighted vs $25 for non-lighted assembly

at Sun Coast.

I haven't tried to repair it with epoxy yet but just wondering

in case I need a back-up plan.

I have a 2000 996 Carrera 4.

Thank you,

Mary

Yes as long as you get the coupe version (if that is what your car is).
