  5. My timing chain was worn (stretched) and the upper U shaped chain guide had a piece of the plastic break off and fall into the oil pan. The engine and most of the drive-train was dropped down on to the shop floor to have the timing chain, oil chain all the chain guides, sprockets, bolts and hardware replaced. I purchased the timing chain kit from FCP- Euro and had the work performed by TSH auto in Toronto. It cost close to $5500 CDN which included all the parts and labour plus oil/filter change, alignment and all fluids. 176000 km and the full service history from a Porsche dealer shows that the previous owners all followed the recommended service intervals for oil changes which is 20000 km or 1 year. If you have a lower mileage car I would at least cut the mileage in half and get the oil changed at least every 10000 km if you plan on keeping your car for a long time and want to avoid a 5k + repair bill. I think it is ill advised for Porsche to be recommending a 20000 km oil change interval. The timing chain on this V8 is extremely long and has to move a lot of parts and appears to be the weak link (Achilles heel) of this engine. These are not cheap cars so why risk it for a $160 oil//filter change, or DIY for less that $100.00. The check engine light is off and the P0016 code is gone, the throttle response is much quicker now.

  7. I found the wiring to this unit on another area of the forum (See attached). The person I bought this car from had the radio replaced with a standard JVC. Rather than wire it through the existing amp, they ran new wires from the JVC amp to the frunck and then cut the output wires from the amp and wired the JVC radio directly to the dash and door speakers. The subwoofer speakers were not working at all. The sub amp was still wired in and I verified it had power. I verified the output wires from the amp are still connect to the subwoofer speakers and work. I tried feeding an audio source into the sub woofer amp, but nothing came out of the sub speakers. I put the subwoofer amp on the bench, powered it up, fed it some audio and attached a speaker to the output. Nothing. Thinking I had a bad amp, I bought another one on eBay. Same thing. Darn! There is a bunch of other wires running between the sub amp and the main amp that are just labelled "Term 38" and "Term 31". Anyone know what these are for? A simple amp should not be this complicated !

  11. Not likely engine damage. A flashing CEL indicates potential engine damage and/or cat damage.
  12. 2004 C4S,Cab. My tech repaired a vacuum leak recently. All was good, but now have 491 and 492 codes. The 40 Amp fuse is intact. I still have some more troubleshooting to do. Can I damage the engine by driving with these codes?
  13. I went to another mechanic! the car is good now, he did mention that I should go for 10w40 oil. we changed the atf fluid and filter and now I don't have anymore errors. I got out of the garage with 3 problems... (2 that I didn't have before and 1 that was starting to show up) 1) they topped up the washing fluid...and for some reason, the reservoir ended up emptying itself on the ground... I now have an empty washer fluid on my dashboard...(im not sure how that's possible and im not sure I want to ask my self the question either...) 2) when they lifted the car, I saw a lot of fresh oil under the engine... (that I didn't have as per the pics above...) but the good news is that its from the air oil separator so its not too bad. 3) the car is a bit wobbly from the back since I want to do my alignment and got the rims straighted (rounded...) and my tyre pressure whent from 2 in the back to 3... the alignment mechanic told me to change the sub par nexen tires with n rated tires. my mechanic tech told me to do an alignment after test driving it.(after the alignment was done ) because the wobbling wasn't normal... I went back to the alignment garage and they checked and its within tolerance... he re recommended to change the tires to real ones... im hoping that the Dunlop sport maxx rt2 that I ordered will fix the problem... otherwise I need to find another alignment garage... Im getting them fitted tomorrow so ill go for a test drive straight after. ill keep you posted... So all in all, im still very happy with my purchase and looking forward to next Friday when ill get the current small issues fixed, then ill be able to hand the key's to my wife and show her how great my purchase is... (for some reason, she's not convinced...)
  14. I had a similar problem on my 99 996. I sent both heads to Hoffman Automotive Machine (706)769-3783 – Where's Your Head? NEWSITE.HAMHEADS.COM M96 cracked cylinder head repair and was extremely satisfied with the results. I now have over two thousand miles on the rebuild and all is well.
  15. Check an d open the connector between the A pillar and the door for poor contacts, breaks and corrosion, including the relevant wiring in question up to the motor/control box.
  16. This is a good example of understanding what a code is telling you. P0341 is for an implausible signal from the cam position sensor, and is most commonly a short or wiring problem rather than a bad position sensor. The diagnostic steps for this code are all wiring harness circuit tests looking at voltages and circuit resistances. Rarely is it caused by the sensor itself.

  18. When the car came up to temp the DME relay would over heat and fail and the fuel pump would stop running . Installed new DME relay and it runs like a top now.
  19. My window won’t go up just down. I took off the door panel and then tried to raise it. It went up again so I thought the problem was solved so I put all the screws back. So later that day I noticed my window was half way down so I tried to raise it again and it wouldn’t raise. I opened up the door panel didn’t do anything else and it’ll raise again. I have no idea what could be the problem any guesses?
