electrical problem - odometer - what have I done?

Recommended Posts

Have been wiring in my double din unit and sat nav and now the odometer isnt working (total miles or recent reset) There is no display whatsoever now? The rest of the cluster is all working fine.

I needed an antenna plug adaptor, so i'm presently running with no head unit in the car. And have also disconnected the sat nav incase there was a problem there with the speed pulse wire? (cant see why speed pulse would affect odometer tho)

Are there any wires in or around the HU harness that I could have damaged in the process or fuses I may have blown to stop the odometer display working?

The sat nav unit was under the drivers seat quite tightly, but couldnt see any wires there that may have been pinched? (UK car so no big box under the drivers side)

no warning lights visible and have pressed most switched in the cabin and everything else seems to be working ok?

any assistance from people in the know such as toolpants :notworthy: would be very much appreciated obviously

thanks Perry

Perry,

Have the display areas gone completely blank? It may just be that the illumination lamp or LED has failed. You'll need to remove the instument cluster to check this. I can't remember the year that Porsche went to all LED for the illumination.

Your year has bulbs. Each LCD display has an illumination bulb. When that bulb goes out you cannot see the display. All I can think of is that the bulb just happened to go out when you were working on the radio. You might give the cluster a wack before you pull it to see if it is really the bulb.

Well I removed the cluster from the car and checked the bulb, all seemed fine? So to double check if the bulb was ok I swapped it over with the bulb behind the digital speedo screen, and voila! alls well on all three screens now.

must have been a loose bulb/connection, so now I have TV/CD/Tuner/DVD and sat nav up and running without the hassle of a faulty odometer.

Thats not saying I can see the screen with the top down of course! :D

Thanks again for your help guys, very much appreciated!

[how are the lights behind the tach, fuel, temp gauges? I've replaced bulbs, twice (the possibilities of having two sets of bad bulbs are too high to calculate). Still no lights. Someone told me once the cluster is removed from the car the dealer had to reset something to get those sets of lights to function again. Is this true?

Thanks to all.
