996 Stalling after start-up

Recommended Posts

Hello, I recently purchased a '99 996 with 86000 miles (car is in immpeccable condition). I don't drive the car much this time of year, but decided to on this nice but crisp (22 Degree) morning. I also drove it last week with no problems, and then washed it in the garage.

Anyway, this morning, as I went to start the car, it fired right up, but immediately stalled. This happened numerous times, until I gave up. I came home @ lunchtime to try it, but had the same result. I found though, that once started, if I engaged the throttle enough to keep it running, and held it, it would run until i let off. I decided to try to back out. Once I did, it stalled as soon as I put the clutch in. So I put it in 1st and started it again. Once I started, I decided to go, and went around the block without stopping or using the clutch. After this everything seemed fine. I drove it back to work, let it sit for 3 hours, and no problems. It's running fine, and the idle seems fine (around 800) and not erratic.

Just really curious what this could be. Fuel filter? Carbon build up? Could water have settled somewhere after the wash? More importantly, if this problem is likely to continue or worsen. Many thanks for any info or advice you may have! Thank you in advance!!!

Sounds like a moisture issue.........once it dried out with engine heat - all seemed OK..........maybe some strategically sprayed WD40 or similar will fix this issue for future wash events.

Thanks for the quick response, I hope your right! I would've been quicker to the same thinking, except that I did, a day after the wash, take it around the block to dry off the brake discs, etc. It ran fine then, but perhaps some water settled in after that??? Suprised it didn't freeze...I can't wait for spring!

This happened on mine after the engine was rebuilt following a broken valve spring.

Essentially the car would stall when cold unless you kept giving it a little throttle, pretty much as you describe.

The garage suggested it would clear itself after a few cycles i.e. Start cold, drive turn off, start cold, drive etc etc. Sure enough after a few days it was fine again.
