DME Control Unit

My son has a 2000 Boxster S with 135,000 miles on the clock. Recently the check engine light came on and he received the following "diagnosis" from the dealer:

SCANNED SYSTEM FOR FAULT CODES. PERFORMED ON BOARD DIAGNOSIS TEST PROCEEDURE FOR OXYGEN SENSORS HEAT FAILURE. CHECKED WIRING AND SENSORS-OK. CHECKED RELAYS-OK. CHECKED DME CONTROL UNIT-FAULTY. ESTIMATE TO REPLACE CONTROL UNIT IS $1355 NOT INCLUDING DIAGNOSIS FEE. ADVISED CLIENT THAT PART MUST BE ORDERED AND PRE-PAID.

Does this seem reasonable and does anyone have any comments on the diagnosis?

Without the fault codes (and there had to be some since the light was on) we are just guessing. As for the fault codes and then post them here.

BTW... when my car was still under warranty a dealer was ready to replace my DME - then they found the DME cable was very loose. Tightened it and no problems since then. This may not be your case but it's worth a look.
