'03 Litronics Retrofit

Itzkirb and I have been looking at this and it looks like they are plug n play. Only difference that we can see is that there are two extra wires on the standard headlight units that are not connected on the Bi-Xenons. According to Gert there is not a factory upgrade kit so you would need a left and right Bi-Xenon headlight.

The part numbers for the Carrera Bi-Xenons are:

996 631 059 20 Left Headlight assembly

996 631 060 20 Right Headlight assembly

I'm picking the car up tomorrow in Chicago (finally bought it) and I've been told by both dealers that the Litronics are not retrofittable as there are wires missing and one needs to redo wiring harnesses which takes like 10 hours they said...

I sure wish that someone had a Litronic that I could try on the car to see if it's PnP!

Has anyone here actually done it?

Robyn and I might try and swap one out this weekend to see if it works.  She has Bi-Xenon and mine does not. 

Loren, do you know which wires (color) we need to use and not use?  I don't want to blow anything up =)

According to the schematic the two wires go no where (not connected) in the Bi-Xenon connector.

In the pre 2002 litronic retrofit kit there was a control unit for the beam rotation and a wiring harness in the kit.

Looking at the parts list for a 2003 996 with 601 option I see a control unit 996 618 151 15. And a wiring harness 996 612 317 61. I think you need the control unit for the beam rotation. I seem to remember that when I started to remove Colm's Bi-Xenon headlight it has the additional wiring harness to it just like the original litronics.

Raman wants to do his fiber optic changer this Saturday. If someone will come by with and without Bi-Xenon and Loren will bring the 996 wiring diagrams then it will be easy to figure out how to do the retrofit.

Guys, I hope that someone will take you up on the offer. I am unfortunately (in more ways than 1) on the other coast...

I checked with my dealer this morning and he said $4200 of parts only... Seems crazy!

Do you know if that MOST retrofit is possible...I have a 2002 tt Changer that I can get for pennies if this is a possible modification

I'll try to meet you guys this weekend ....I live in SF and work in Hayward, so hopefully I wont miss out on all the fun! :cheers:

If you have a 2003 with HiFi or Bose or PCM then you have MOST and the only changer which will work is the Porsche CDC-4 fiber optic changer. What I do not know is if a 2003 with none of these options will work with the older changer. There is a place to plug a changer into on the back of a 2003 radio head but I have no idea if it will work.

A changer from a 2002 will be a Becker 2660/Porsche CDC-3. Subject to what I said above, it will not work in a 2003. Jeff

Guys,

I talked to Gert who said that the retrofit could be done but was NOT easy. Porsche purposely crossed wired inside the lights and to fix that your need a special tool or cutting wires which is not recommended on lights... You also use the auto-level feature. I will most likely do it in the spring... I anyone does it before, please post

I am working with Gert to figure out the correct wiring (or pins to move). You will need a pin removal tool to do this.

When we tried this last weekend the Bi-Xenons plugged in fine and the low beams lit right up... unfortunately the high beams did not come on (lights stayed on low beams) nor did the fog lights come on. You will not be able to retrofit the auto-level since you would have to run a new wiring harness and sensors to each wheel.

When Loren pulled out the wiring diagram on Saturday after removing the headlights on 2 cars, I knew it was time to go back to working on Aileen's Boxster. Other than the fact the headlights are different, the connector to the xenon headlight had many more wires to it than the standard headlight. Some pictures I took.

Hey sorry to chime in but I am going to upgrade my front end to the 02 and up litronics. do I need to get that control module and can you give me the wiring color codes for both my 99 harness and the 02 and up one so I can wire it right without having to pull out my meter and work? Thanks. Any other help would be great also, i.e. if I need that control unit or whatever, and or bi xenon extras. Please email me. thanks. Sean
