  1. Hi all quick update, so far so good! Could someone move this to 996? I posted in this area in error. Thank you! Jazz
  2. Hi all, As I lurk all the time, I thought I'd post what I have going on for the benefit of anyone that can use it. Lately I've been having the dreaded intermittent cranks but won't start situation. It seems to occur mostly when the engine is warm. If left for an hour it starts up. It happens twice in a day, or not for 3 weeks, totally random. The car runs fine when its running. It's only stalled once while running. I was idling in the parking lot. Just as I noticed rpms swinging between about 780 and 730ishm dead. Started an hour later. I tried a fully charged, brand new battery one time during the no start condition and it did not help New fuel relay, no help. A DME Relay is on the way. I won't install it for a while to verify if it was the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Today I changed out the Crankshaft Position Sensor. The old one was covered in gunk and the magnetic tip was black. The new one, nice and shiny magnet there. So far so good, I'll update in a week or two. The CPS is indeed a pretty easy job, anyone can do. Just don't drop the screw in there anywhere! I stuck some chewing gum in it, smushed it onto the allen socket and gently got it started. Removing it, was the same. Slow and gentle. I used an allen socket and 1 long and one 6 inch extension put together. Reaches in no problem. I've attached a couple of pictures to help locate it. Looking from the drivers side through the wheel well you can see it as shown by the red arrow picture. Thats just the hole after its been removed. I forgot to get a shot of it in there The Yellow arrow picture shows its appearance if you were to slide under the car from behind, head first and just to the inside of the drivers side wheel well. I've outlined the wire and labeled the CPS B (from the red picture) and the plug end "A". The plug has a little lever tab on top that you can't see, Feel for it and push it down to disengage the plug. You can totally get at it if you contort properly, no big deal. That black plug to the left of it is something else and it made life easier to pull it out of its clip. Pretty sure it just pulled straight out. Anyway, for what its worth. Fingers crossed its the CPS or the DME Relay next. If not, I'm headed towards fuel pump I suppose.... -= Jazz
  3. A strange bonus is that the clutch feels much much nicer though it was not replaced? Any thoughts on why this is?
  4. Hi...the only solution I considered and used was the LN bearing. I suppose you could replace it with Porsche part if you were a gambling type...lol. I didn't research everything that might be available as the LN was clearly the most popular solution so I just went with that.
  5. Okee. HELLGA'S back with a new ceramic dual bearing..whoot! Clutch was good... $1700 was the best I could do around here. Most wanted 3000 ish. What a load off :)
  6. Rob...it won't let me reply to you for some reason. Anyway, upgrade scheduled.
  7. Thanks for the quick response! I suppose its going to be a two weeker in the shop then...grrrrr! I may die without my Hellga for two weeks..... A quick note... I just called another shop and posed this bearing question. The answer was "Its a single row". Doesn't seem the answer should have been so certain? -Jazz
  8. Hi all, I've been researching this bearing business and am considering replacing as a preventative. Car is a 2000 C4 with 65,000 miles on it. Runs good, no problems at all. I was given a nice quote of 1700.00 at my local Indie who has done a few of these, so it is tempting! My question is, with a VIN and an engine number, it appears that you still can't be sure of which bearing is in the car. So how do I order the parts??? Do you think they would send both and accept a return? What I'm trying to avoid is the car in the shop while the wrong bearing comes...gets sent back...new bearing comes...install...etc. Haven't dug up the engine number yet, but here's the VIN if its at all helpful: WPOAA2992YS622596 Thanks for any insight! -= Jazz
  9. Hi all, I have a 2000 C4 with 64000 on it. I know that's not super high miles but I just wanted to add to the positives for this great little car. It is a joy and I am happy to be able to get in on a 911 at an affordable price. I had to do a reverse light switch and ignition switch. IMS (1700.00 at indie who's done a few) and RMS coming up as a preventative measure. No noises or leaks...solid.
  10. So I went and got a 2004 ignition switch ( 4B0 905 849 ), put it in the 2000 which called for 4A0 905 849 B according to everything....VROOOM! All good! Maybe someone before me changed something under there?? And NAPA had it in stock...23.00 USD -= Ivan
  11. Oiieee, on hold until I figure my ignition switch out! LOL -=Jazz
  12. Hi all, So my recently purchased 2000 Carrera 4 had this in the glove box... So now, of course, the ignition started acting up, (warning lights would not come on with key in first position (except airbag light), no starter engagement... try try try..there it goes! ) I dug underneath to replace it. What I found was this.... As you can see, they are quite different, even though the poles are identical. The black one in the first picture has the part number you guys refer to by Meyle products 4A0 905 849 B... what gives? I tried installing it, but it seems that the key positions don't match right so when the black one is installed, the key will not turn. It feels like its at a stop. I can turn the switch with a screwdriver, but it just seems its indexed wrong when installed. Replaced with original white one, key turns fine. I'm imagining the two are not interchangeable? Any thoughts? -= Ivan PS.. Not a bad job at all once you find the right contortion! For me it was my back on the seat sort of, and my head far to the left underneath...left arm over my head with screwdriver! About an hour first try...after that on and off in minutes to try different things...Enjoy!
  13. Fingers crossed..I'm hoping it's just gooped up or jammed and will respond to some tlc
  14. Ok..I'll give that a go in a couple of days and report back. Thanks! The way I figure..it's already broken..haha. Might as well have at it!
  15. It's in the in position...so little screwdrivers in the side?
  16. Hi all, I've seen the postings on removing the hazard switch. They all begin with "Turn on Hazards". My switch is stuck in the in position, which is why I"m trying to remove it to locate the issue. It is in the in position and feels very firm, there's zero movement. Ideas?? -= Jazz
