  1. I haven't tried starting without the serpentine belt yet but I have changed the oil to DT40, unfortunately no change, will try removing the belt and come back.
  2. Water pump's not long been done flatjoe, thanks though
  3. Hi people, please can you have a listen to the video attached. This is my 1998 c2, i spent £4.5k on an engine rebuild after the ims started to break up (caught in time luckily), then a couple of months later it starts making this noise when starting from cold. In the video it hasn't been started for 3 days and as you can hear the noise goes away after less than a minute. The indy has told me it's early piston slap and will cost about £6k to put right! It didn't do it before and i wonder if they've put different oil in it or something. Any ideas please? Thank you.
  4. Sorry to open an old thread but I'm still having issues with the tiptronic when cold. Is it possible to reset the gearbox? Where i used to live we had a gravel driveway that was on a slope, when i reversed the car off, it had so much torque that using the brake pedal to control speed meant the front wheels would lock as the rears kept turning and literally dragged the locked up fronts across the loose gravel. Eventually I learnt to leave the brake pedal alone and i used the hand brake instead as this helped to slow the rear wheels instead of the front and did the trick. However about this time i found that once I'd driven off (forwards!), at low speeds the rpm would be a little erratic, almost like it wanted to change gear but didn't (I've tried to video this to demonstrate). So I'm wondering if my hand brake trick might have upset the tcu settings, and now i need to reset...? Any ideas please? The Indies I've taken it to have changed the maf and the throttle body, thinking it's an engine issue, this has done nothing other than cost me money and I'm now convinced it's transmission related.
  5. Thanks Loren, not sure where to get a smoke machine from just yet but I'll try this and let you know. Thank you.
  6. Sorry I should have said, throttle body was replaced already, along with maf. Where is the cold start valve please?
  7. Carrera 2, 1998, 3.4, just over 100k with a new ims 6k ago..
  8. I have this issue where the car starts and idles fine but when cold, I drive down the road at a steady 30 out 40mph, the revs fluctuate by about 500 rpm, enough to hear and enough to feel. When warmed up fully it's fine, until the next day when it does it all again. The only other issue is noisy tappets on cold start, for the first minute or so, then the tapping goes away. Is there any chance the two could be linked? Any thoughts? Thank you.
  9. I also had the mayo in the filler neck, a few longer trips and red lines later, it's all gone!
  10. I bought the one from Amazon in the end, it arrived yesterday and I fitted it last night. Drove to work this morning but it's probably too early to tell yet if it's made any difference to that particular issue. The weather is quite warm right now and it was always more obvious during the colder months. That said, it did seem smoother in general but that could be in my head!! Will report back in a couple of weeks to update. Thanks again for all your replies.
  11. Sorry didn't see that pic, I was looking on my phone last night, I'll wip mine out and check the number. I have already cleaned the existing one and changed the idle valve & throttle body but the problem still persists, I think the MAF is the only item remaining now! Basically, when cold and at low revs it struggles to hold a constant RPM and instead fluctuates a little, maybe by 50 RPM or so. Not there under hardish acceleration, just when the engine isn't under much load. Hilux - Olympic sale at Euro Car Parts means it's just been reduced to around £200! Amazon is still a bit cheaper though.
  12. What part numbers do you have there Firestarter?
  13. Thanks guys. The Amazon one looks reasonable, certainly more so than euro car parts. I'm not entirely sure that's the issue but have an annoying hunting problem at low revs when the engine is cold, so figured it's worth a try.
  14. Hi, can anyone recommend somewhere to get an MAF for a 996 in the UK please, other than Porsche direct? I've seen MAF Shop etc but would like to know if anyone has experience of them? Many thanks.
  15. 1998 C2, tiptronic. Bought it in amazing condition at 92k, oil change at 94k revealed metal in the filter. Drove a few hundred miles after this as engine sounded sweet as. Then found a really good indie who advised me to stop driving and get it trailered to him. He stripped the engine down and found the IMS literally hanging on, to this day he cant believe I got away with it. Anyway new shells and one or two other bits followed and I now have a lovely car and engine with about 4K on it. A daily driver, other things that have gone in my ownership are the water pump and now the indicator won't turn itself off, it is old though so I should expect things like this now and then.
  16. Thanks for your replies. It was done by a Porsche Indie, he charged me £250, apparently they hold a lot of oil/fluid. I have no idea what the temp was when he did it but I would hope it was correct. Hilux, you've described it exactlyso it's obviously pretty normal.
  17. Hi all, is it normal for a tiptronic to feel quite brutal when cold and be almost silky smooth once warmed up? I've had the oil changed recently and it made a little difference but not much. As well as being a bit more brutal when cold it almost feels that it can't decide whic gear to be in. When warm though it's pretty perfect, I wondered if there's temp s nor somewhere that could cause this?
  18. Thanks DBJ. I just tried this, unlocked via the key hole, the alarm went off so I opened the drivers door and pressed the remote until it stopped. Then shut the door and tried the passenger door, it opened. Locked it with the remote, then unlocked it with the remote, passenger door fine. It may just be coincidence, otherwise I'm not sure what I've managed to change but will see if it continues to obey and report back. Thanks again.
  19. Hi people, got my 996 back a few weeks ago after an engine rebuild so the battery etc. was disconnected for a couple of weeks. Everything engine wise is good but I'm having an issue opening the passenger door. If I press the remote then driver's door always unlocks and I can get in, but the passenger door won't open, you pull the handle (inside and out) and the window drops slightly but the door won't open. When you let go of the handle, the window moves back to it's shut position. I read somewhere that if you press the remote twice within 5 seconds then both doors will open, and sometimes this works. I'm sure it's a safety feature but I'm keen to get it back to how it used to be when you pressed it once and both doors were ready to open. Does anyone know how to reset it / switch it into another mode please? Many thanks.
  20. John, Ahsai, Update time! I've had the engine stripped down, went to see it the other night and according to the guy who's doing it it's all in pretty good condition, liners, cams etc. He's going to replace the crankshaft bearings while it's apart, but the offending item was......you guessed it! How lucky was I that it didn't go bang?! He wants to replace the whole shaft as opposed to just the bearing and I believe that means getting one from the US so I reckon it'll be the end of November before I get it back. I feel lucky to have caught it in time, and lucky to have found someone experienced to do the job, looking forward to getting back my almost spotless 996 with a new lease of life :)
