  1. Hi, I have a 1998 3.4 Carrera MK1 996. 6 speed Manual. The car has been fully restored and had subtle changes made to it including upgrading the brakes and the wheels to 19" versions. (285/30/R19) I have recently changed the rear tyres on my 996 to a brand new set of PZEROs. and since doing this the passenger side rubs whenever I hit a bump or a pothole. I have had the arches rolled and this has resolved the issue on everyday roads, however over the weekend I took it out on some country roads for a some spirited driving and it rubbed often so I am now looking to fit adjustable suspension to the rear in order to raise the car slightly to accomodate the larger wheels (currently you struggle to get your finger between the arch and the top of the tyre). Can anyone suggest some makes and versions, and where to buy them? Also I am not looking to spend a fortune - hopefully around £300-500 at max.
  2. Hi, I noticed today that my coolant level was low so I have topped it up and will monitor it to see how it goes over the next week or so - however I have read that there is a coolant low level indicator that flashes a certain colour in the corner of the temp guage if the coolant is too low. I have not had any lights flashing so I am hoping everything is fine, however it has occurred to me that maybe the light isn't working. On my Z3M there is a proceedure I can do with the key that will put the car into self test mode and it will cycle round all the dash instruments to show that they are working etc. Is there something similar on the 996? For reference it is a MK1, 3.4l 1998 manual. Thanks in advance.
  3. Hi, thanks for the reply - yes it is a 6 speed manual. I will have a search online for info on the e-gas control
  4. Ok so I removed the panels next to the battery and looked in and I can't see any drain holes. Does anyone have any pictures of where these should be? Also I removed the pollen filter and removed some leaves however the noise still remains - any thoughts?
  5. Hi All, Thought I would introduce myself and see if anyone can offer any (hopefully obvious) advise on a couple of small issues that are really starting to spoil the experience. I am the new proud owner of a Mk1 996 Carrera which has had a lot of work done on it previously including a replaced engine, full respray to a new colour and GT3 upgrades. I love the car and the way it looks and I have already started making it "mine" by fitting a new Double Din stereo, Refurbished Steering wheel and bought some leather dye and treatment for the seats. However, since I started ownership in September I have had a few issues which hopefully people will be able to point me in the right direction. The first 2 are the ones that baffle me, the other 2 I just need to know if I am on the right track. 1. When I set off (and when I reverse) I find it hard to find a "normal" bite point. Often I touch the pedal and it goes up to 2000 rpm rather than being a smooth bite action. Linked to this first point, in an attempt to control the bite point I often find that I don't give it enough revs and the revs drop to almost a stall. This then leads to an irratic idle when I come to a stop at the lights. When I pull up at the lights and put the car in neutral the revs drop down to around 400 rpm, before rising to 1200 rpm dropping again and rising before settling back at around 700/800. I have a couple of BMW Z3's and they suffer with a similar lack of control at low revs which is fixed by replacing the (stretched) throttle cable. Is this something that is common on the 996? My other thought is that maybe the throttle body (and or Idle control valve) need cleaning? If so are they easy to get to, can you recommend any links, videos, instructions? *EDIT - found the Throttle cleaning thread - hopefully it is as simple as it seems*? 2. When I got the car I couldn't see any receipt for the IMS bearing (although the clutch had been repaired and it has a refurbished engine) so the garage agreed to drop the engine and replaced the IMS, RMS, new clutch plate, replace both inlet manifolds and full service. After a few days the engine management light came on. A few trips back and forth to the garage and it was finally resolved by changing the plugs again. All was well for 2500 miles before it came back on again. Codes said a misfire down the left bank but after a few times reseting the codes it happened again that the only fix was to change the plugs. Since then I've done a further 1000 miles with the light off but Im sceptical about whether it is fixed or not. 3. The carpet in the boot is wet (inside the car is dry) and if I don't remove the boot (bonnet) floor drain plugs there is often a deep puddle - I think this might be the front drain holes under the plastic in front of the windscreen? 4. There is a buzzing noise which seems to come from behind the dash on the passenger side - sounds like the heater fan catching - I think this might be the pollen filter? All advise welcome.. apologises if they have been covered previously, I did try to search the site but wasn't able to find exact matches. Thanks, Bert.
