I just had a full glass out respray. Cost was £5000. it looks great now!
-
Unless you are lucky like me-I found mine written in biro on the top of the unit after removal-you will have to take it to Porsche so they can get the serial number and send of for the code. Wave goodbye to £40.
-
It is a common issue. Sometimes, if its run very low, you have to put a certain amount in before it will register on the gague. If I run mine till the light comes on I have to put more than £25 in before it registers. I have no idea why?
-
Mine has never had an RMS and uses NO oil over the 12k intervals between servicing. People tell me that these cars like to be driven and I can see now its true.
-
hey guys , would like to hear some opinions on your everyday driving habits
, can these 3.4 996 really handle years of high reving fun with out spinning out the RMS every other month or the dreaded cylinder wall failures,
:renntech:
Yes of couse they can-its what they are built for. Mine now has 72k miles and lots (most) of those miles are at high revs/hard driving. As long as its serviced and you MUST wait for it to warm up then of course you can thrash them every day. The red line is there so that the engine cant be damaged. They set it at a safe level.
-
Yes the switch still works.
-
No idea I am afraid-but I am very interested in the answer,
-
Mine was the same for months-it was the battery and now everything is great.

The relay has to be part number 996.618.980.01 or 996.618.980.02 or 996.618.980.03.
You need to find the right relay.
Loren thank you. I pulled another plastic cover down and there was another relay-the one that I needed! All done now and very happy!!
Thanks again.
Phil

Hmm... what is the part number on your relay?
There are 2 of the larger relays with the following part numbers. The first one is the one highest up on the board
996 615 117 00
996 615 103 00
-
If your relay ends in 01 or 02 then it will be different.
I doubt you have the dash switch either - do you?
Yes I had the dash switch fitted too.
-
Eddy,
Many, many thanks for this superb mod :D As others have observed, the longest part of the project was getting the case off the relay
Just taken it down the road and enjoyed my GT3's 'voice' at the mid-range where, because of British roads, it spends most of its time - superb mod - thanks again.
For those who are interested, I use the part no. Loren gave and ordered a replacement relay just in case - £51.00 and will be here tomorrow.
Philip
Hi all. I just had the PSE fitted and want to do this mod BUT..there is no relay with that part number or words on in my car. It a 1999 C2. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help

If its any use here in the UK I paid £550 for the same job....makes yours seem OK.
-
You wouldnt catch me putting used tyres on.
They could have been down pot holes, over kerbs etc and who is to know if the sidewall is weakened?
The only time tou may find out is a high speed blow out that could be the the end of your life...
Driving a Porsche and trying to save a few £s on tyres???
Dont do it. Its just not worth it. They are the only thing that keeps you on the road.

I had the exactly the same thing on my 996. A few days later the window got stuck and all sorts of grinding noise and no more window...a new regulator was fitted last week and no more squeek!
-
My warranty covered the same leak...
-
Well I have been to Wilmslow this morning and its the window regulator, not covered by warranty :( and will cost £210 all in.
They also found the cam cover is leaking (it was fixed in Feb!!) and the variocam is leaking and I need an oil pressure switch, all of which IS covered :clapping:
So its going in a week on Thursday and they even asked what car I would like for 2 days!! So since I have never driven a Boxster I am having one of them...nice to be given a choice I think.
-
Hi All- just wound the windows down and there was a trerrible sqeeking sound followed by a crack and the window stopped going down-but the regulator was still moving (albeit gratingly) inside the door
So it wont wind the window up (I have pulled it up by hand and it dosent want to stay). Any ideas anyone and will this be covered by the OPC extended warranty?

Hi - I have just bought a 1999 996 C4 - Even when driven lightly, it has a very mild 'hot engine' smell when I stop. It doesn't really smell like burnt oil (maybe burnt Mobil 1 smells a bit different) - to me it might smell a bit like burnt coolant, but the car does appear to be losing / using any fluids... Any ideas?
Thanks,
Derek
From what I can gather this is perfectly normal. Mine does the same but mine dosent smell midly hot rather red/boiling hot :drive: !!!!
I think most people find the 996 smells...if there is no coolant/oil loss I wouldnt worry about it!
-
Most likely spark plug tube(s) or cam cover, since they are common sources for oil leaks.
Thanks for that.. I had the O/S cam cover mended last Nov at the dealer so perhaps they did a bad job...I will take it back.
-
Yes its fine-I had mine done and they split them for me.
-
Hi all…I nave been lurking here for while and it seems a great site!(and always recommended)
Can I pick your brains???
I was out for a major thrash yesterday (racing a motorbike and losing like normal-those things are FAST) and when I got home I noticed that after 20 mins or so there was 5 or 6 drips of oilo n the floor-but it stopped after 15 mins or so. I have the following pics so wondered if you could help and give me an idea of what is leaking? Its on the right hand side if your looking at the rear of the car.
Is this kind of thing covered by the Porsche warranty?
Many Thanks for any help!
996 T floppy driveshaft!
in 996 TT, 996 TT S, 996 GT2

Hi all, New here again after an extended Pork break, but have been a lurker for a while. Wonderful place, and I now call upon your help!
My 2002 996T (Tiptronic) went in for a discnnected boost pipe (all fixed easily) but they noticed movement in the rtight hand side (as you look from the rear) driveshaft, at the output flange. Rather than risk driving it and a gearbox explosion, I have left it with them. Not really floppy, just a small movement.
However, I am an impatient type!
They think its the bearing just inside the flange and are taking it apart with that repair in mind.
I just wondered if anyone has heard of this before-I have searched but cant easily find anything.
All help appreciated.
Phil
