  1. post-1096-0-95639400-1331410160_thumb.jp

Check this out... Just a little tidbit to personalize the car. Ferrari does it so it's OK, I guess.. :-)

That is cool! Where did you get the Porsche crest and how did you adhere it to the paint?

It is actually a magnetic "sticker" that you can peel off at any time without damaging the paint.

Can you tell me where you purchased it?

    Thanks !

  3. Some pointers for folks that are looking into buying a 996 Turbo. They are THE best value on the Porsche market right now and, no matter what people tell you... this is the FIRST of the NEW Porsche (water cooled etc) with a GREAT GT1 engine (no known engine defects). The car is well understood in the aftermarket tuner and modification market with a wide array of aftermarket options available at reasonable prices. It is also 1/2 price compared with the 997 versions if which more than 100,000 copies ( all variants) were made worldwide.

There are very few gotcha's with the 996 T assuming it was accident free and maintained correctly. The gotchas's are:

a/ 2nd gear pop-out - modification is available. engine needs to be lowered to repair.

b/ coolant pipes not welded but glued prone to dumping our coolant - engine needs to be lowered to be repaired

c/ check front differential for wear if previous owners have used incorrect tires sizes back / front

d/ Porsche batteries have short life and are hugely expensive - so replace asap is best option

e/ Brake system and clutch servo system uses Pentasin and can leak - modify clutch master/ servo to GT 2 system is the solution

f/ air leaks in turbo system - pressure / leak test the system

So here is a write-up on my hunt for the right car. I started off thinking that I did not want any mods or " enhancements".

    My initial criteria were:

    1/ 2002 or later

2/ nice exterior color / interior color combo

    3/ California car

    4/ low mileage

5/ DME read-out acceptable - no over revs that matter

    6/ six speed

    7/ preferable a 1-owner car

    8/ Carfax solid

    9/ PPI acceptable.

10/ only meaningful mods (wheels, suspension etc)

    11/ full documentation

I looked a several cars during my chase and I ended up purchasing a 2003 T 996 with the following build / options

1/ metallic basalt black / natural brown full leather

    2/ Cal car

    3/ 23k miles

    4/ no overrevs

    5/ 6-speed

    6/ 3 owners - last owner 6+ years

7/ carfax solid / docs complete

8/ PPI done by Porsche dealer OK

When I was done, I also ended up with additional goodies such as:

    1/ Factory Aerokit

2/ 19 inch Sportecs instead of 18 inch Hollows

    3/ Fabspeed headers / exhaust

    4/ Evoms airbox

    5/ Tial A28 turbo/s

    6/ Evoms ECUtune to 520 -550 HP

7/ Upgraded sound system to Alpine, including JLA amp / cross-over complete with 2 x12 inch woofer box custom built on parcel shelf, etc

8/ K-40 installed incl Laser scrambler

9/ full ruffled leather interior, headlining Alcantara

10/ complete JIC coil over installation

I am estimating that I paid no more than $2,000.00 for the complete mods / upgrades. I am also calculating that the cost of the mods - when NEW - including the various installation(s) would have been pretty close to $20K. So , I recon I paid 10 cents to the dollar for the mods.

One rule: Take your time... there is ALWAYS another one just around the corner to look at.

  4. Could not resist so I acquired a set of 18 Inch Porsche Original Hollow Spokes - Turbo rims. They are currently tireless

And.. I am starting to think about what set of tires I am going to put on them. My plan is to swap the 19's Sportecs out for a while, just have some summer fun with the 18". Ahhh the hunt !!!

  5. Update after exhaust change. Folks, it is a different car for sure and I must say that I do like the way the engine sounds now. The sound is "there" for sure and gets a " urgency" when running above 4K revs. I am thinking that perhaps this exhaust is "tuned" by Porsche to give a quite uniform sound foot print at a set of frequencies that is pleasing to the ear ( hey I am a musician so I hear that stuff). Somehow, the engine seems to be pulling just as hard as before and more importantly, the engine sounds "happier" and more linear in power build-up with this OEM exhaust. It just could be me of course!! :-).

Also, I notice that - unlike the 996 - the 996T seems to have less of a problem with ambient temperatures, the engine temp sits just at 180 degrees and does not move too much north whereas the 996 temps goes pretty high up to 200 + in the summer months. It was something I did not like too much and yes, I kept the radiators clean.

All-in-all it is a very positive change. Happy face <here > :drive:

  6. Just wondering. Obviously we have a bunch of fans for cooling purposes and then there is the fan that pushes air into the engine compartment. What is the proposed cycle for this fan? Is is supposed to be on at all times, or when the engine is warmed up or when the engine is "hotter" than X degrees?? Is it supposed to be working in conjunction with the radiator fans in the front of the car or what??

  7. So, here are some thoughts after 3 months of ownership. First, there is NO comparison between a C2 and a similar model Turbo. This thing is frighteningly fast whereas the C2 can be driven with full throttle up to 6th gear, the turbo is just too fast and will hit triple digits before you know. It's a good idea to only hit the go-button when you are reasonably straight. The car just hunkers down and goes, boost comes on very quickly and holds .9BAR (I have Alpha 28 Tial turbos) all the way up. Gear shifting is smooth and consistent... but a bit long ( if you are used to a shortshifter). Brakes are powerful and inspire confidence for sure. Must say I like the "weight" of the front part of the Turbo. It is not "floaty" and it is planted very well. Perhaps my JIC Coil overs have something to do with that. I decided to raise the car about 1/2 inch to get some more cushioning as I am running 19 inch wheels. It is still quite low and looks right to me. I also bought a set of Porsche Hollow Spokes and I am planning to swap them over some time in the future to see how the 18 inchers feel as I am running mostly on 405 freeway type roads. I think the 996T is a real good bargain at this moment but I also believe that the prices are started to climb and that many 996TT are in the hands of folks that have no intention of rotating them out in a year or so... I believe that, because of the Mezger engine, lots of people will be hunting for these cars as the engines can be modded so easily and the engine can go to 700 HP without problems. There are lots of parts and tuners that have options and parts for these cars. They will be there for a long time to come.

  8. It still works. Just a quick update. I am extremely surprised to see how often the charger's display changes from "battery full" to " battery charging" with the appropriate activity of the charger. I take it that there is a lot of power consumed while the car is just sitting there (hence the suggestion to lock you car as that turns off more electrical systems). No wonder Porsche is using these HUGE batteries to prevent them from draining too quickly.
