  1. Hey guys, As many of you know, I have been trying to track down this annoying vibration / wobble that I've been experiencing through my steering wheel for past year or so. Today, another forum member was generous enough to let me swap wheels with him to see if that was the case, but the problem persists. However, when I was replacing the wheels after the test drive, I noticed that my driver side front rotor was a good bit hotter than the other three. When I got home, I used my IR thermometer and confirmed - all 3 were between 85 and 95 degrees F and the driver left was at 115-120 F depending on the part of the rotor I pointing the thermometer at. Could this be responsible for the vibration and wobble? Would it be a warped rotor issue? Unbalanced rotor? Sticking caliper? What's the best way to check for these? In case anyone asks, the following have been done already in hope of figuring this out and have not solved the issue: Tie Rods Inner (L+R) Tie Rods Outer (L+R) Drop Links (Front) Struts (All 4) + Mounts/Bearings Lower Control Arms (All 4) Front Track Arms (L+R) Rear Trailing Arms (L+R) Wheel Bearings Tires (All 4) Sway Bar Bushings (All 4) Alignment (Thrice) Wheel Balancing (5 times and counting...)
  2. Is this part accessible from the interior of the car, or underneath? Is it possible to tighten them without removing the steering rack?
  3. Which part numbers correspond to the u-joints, and how does one check/access them? What is the best way to check the rack for play?
  4. Hey everyone - I'm now starting year 2 of the steering wheel shake saga... Anyway, the most recent thing I did has improve the issue significantly (maybe 75% gone now) but I still have this infuriating shake in my steering wheel at 75+ mph and a lot of bump steer / some play in my steering. Car is 2002 S with 88k miles. I have replaced all of the following items in search of this issue: Tie rods (in & out) Drop links (front) Struts & Strut mounts (front and rear) Control arms (front and rear) Front tracking arms Rear trailing arms Wheel bearings (front) Tires (Continental ExtremeContact DW) Sway bar bushings (front and rear) Multiple alignments Multiple tire balances All parts are OEM. Most recently, I went to a Porsche dealer and had them align the car and balance the front wheels. The toe was set to toe out on both the front and rear which they then corrected to zero toe in on the front and slight toe in on the rear. I'm really at my wits' end here. What else could I look at? I have thrown a ton of money at this issue and I just want to enjoy my car again. Pretty much every shop I have taken it to has claimed it to be wheel balancing, and I have had the wheels balanced probably 5 times all on Hunter Road Force machines. Every time they balance them, they seem to be close to a 1/2 oz out of balance - is it possible that there is something inside my tie that is causing this? This issue started with my old tires and has continued with the new ones too. I've had multiple places check the rims for bends, but nothing has been noticed - only thing I can think of is that they have not checked the rims with the tires off. I have also tried different PSIs and swapping tires L/R. Rotors have a pretty significant lip on them, but the vibration does not get any worse when braking. The vibration does seem to get a little bit better as the car warms up... any help would be awesome guys.
  5. I thought my tire was slipping on the rim earlier this week when I referenced them off the center caps, but the center caps might also just be loose. I'm going to index the tire off of the valve stem tonight and see if it is slipping. I've had the tires road force balanced twice, but no improvement. No wheel spacers - stock 18" rims and the problem started before I put on the Conti tires. The previous owner had these horrible Nankangs on there, but they worked just fine for about 8 months before the problem started. The car felt great on my way to work that day, and then when I got back into it to drive home, it just felt off. This was about a year ago and I've been trying to track down this issue since then.
  6. Yeah, the steering wheel seems to be pretty responsive to the steering inputs. I'll run the second test today when I get off work - from what I remember, there is no clunking besides the wheel turning.
  7. Yeah it feels like both of my front wheels are square or something, but I've undone and re-done the lug nuts multiple times and everything up there is torqued to spec.
  8. Hey everyone - 2002 Boxster S, 87k miles, 18 inch turbo twists. I've been trying to track down an issue that makes my steering feel loose and sloppier along with a slight vibration I can feel in the steering wheel. I also get a lot of steering kickback when I drive over bumpy roads - the steering wheel violently shakes from side to side on road full of ruts/imperfections. The vibration and sloppy steering is noticeably worse on rough roads, and seems to improve a bit on smoother pavement. The steering wheel shake gets worse on the freeway around 75 mph. I have also noticed that my driver-side side view mirror seems to vibrate while my passenger side one stays perfectly still. So far I have done the following: So far I have done the following: New tie rods (inner + outer) New front drop links New sway bar bushings (front + rear) New control arms (front + rear) New track arms New trailing arms New struts (Bilstein B4) New strut mounts (front) New tires (Conti ExtremeContact DW) New front wheel bearings 4 Wheel Alignment Wheel balancing @ a reputable shop I've had all four wheels checked for bends/defects and they are all arrow straight I have done all of the work myself (except for the alignment, balancing, and tire mounting), but I've been to a few different specialist shops and no one has been able to fully solve the issue. The parts I replaced have improved on the issue, but the car still does not feel like it did before this issue arose. I can't really find any play when pulling on the wheels nor is there a noticeable drone at highway speeds. Does the actual steering rack play a role in this? Could it be the motor mount that causes this?
