i looked here and here but i am still a little bit confused by what needs to happen (and i am usually good with working on my own car too).

i bought a CDC-4 on ebay. it came without any brackets or wire harnesses.

my dealer tells me i can get the brackets ($50) and optical wire harness ($243) from him.

the question is... is there a good, step-by-step, DIY write-up on how to do this project?

Try a new battery first.

If that does not work you might have to have programmed to the car.

tried it - not the battery.

if i reprogram the car, does it mean the other key will stop working? do both get reprogrammed?

hi there.. i bought my '03 996 cab two years from the dealer who only had one key. today they called me and told me they found a 2nd key for the car. so i stopped by and picked it up. here is the problem:

the second key only works when i use it to physically lock/unlock the door with and to start the car with, but it does NOT work as the remote control (even though the red light flashes brightly on the remote) even from 2 feet away from the car.

anybody knows why that is? do i need to have special magic done to activate it?

i know the car disables remote control capability after 5 days of inactivity, but this appears to be a separate issue.

so in follow up to this post, i found these parts sell for $10... the question is, what is my interior color? it seems like i have a few choices here

the part number that is on my car (just took it off to check it out) is 996.552.273.01

996.552.273.01 only comes in one black: "black lacquered" but part number 996.552.273.00 is "satin black". i have 2003 and i remember pre-face lifted 996s had different shade of black. should i get "black lacquered" like i suspect i should or am i wrong?

so i spent my day today swapping out both front and rear worn out OEM pads with Hawk HPS pads. i do have a few questions though:

1. I have decided not to install both rear and front vibration dampeners for now since i will want to swap to pagid track pads in a few weeks. Question: will not having both rear and front vibration dampeners affect brake performance or brake safety in any way? I am aware of possible "sound like a train" effect :) but without the dampeners the brakes just feel loose in their, like they could pop out any time :(

2. This is the final result. As you can see the brake sensor wire is missing. I decided not to drill the pad for the sensor and simply shortened the cable and tie-wrapped it:

dear all,

a few weeks ago i noticed a little bit of brake fluid on the top of the brake fluid reservoir. i figured the cap was not seated on all the way (or seated properly). i wiped the fluid and re-seated the brake fluid reservoir cap. i did notice that if i tightened it too much, it would click and i'd have to re-tighten it all over again (stopping right before the click)

today i noticed a little bit of brake fluid on top of the reservoir again. you can see it right around the edge:

the brakes seem totally fine. i had them bleed by a high end independent porsche shop about 9 months ago (~5K miles ago).

any ideas of what this could be? the fluid is right around the 'max' marks. my first step will be replacing the reservoir cap but if anybody has any other suggestions, i'd LOVE to hear them.

P.S. - what does the "clean filter cap before removing" mean? why before? how can you clean it before removing? gosh i feel stupid, i suspect the answer will be super simple.

OK, one 2001 TT bumper installed on my 03 Targa and it looks great - thanks to the posts of others that have completed the similar project. Although the bumper fits and looks great, there is a big gap underneath between the bumper and the underbody lining. I have not been able to locate any specific information here or on any of the other forums that explains how to fill the gap - any advice would be much appreciated!

you can use tie wraps for now and fabricate little metal extensions later on...

ok i feel like an idiot. which means i probably am. i removed my litronic headlights today on my 996 today and when putting one back, it got wedged in such a weird way that now it will not come out. i tried everything: twisting the headlight removing tool and pulling, removing wheel and liner and pushing it out, etc. nothing. its just stuck there. the weird part is that the inside of the light seems to come up an inch or so, but outside seems to be stuck solid next to the fender metal. any suggestions? clues? pointers?

(it seems stuck on there so strong, that i figured i'd drive around with it for a bit and see if things change)

any pictures of this magic part 996 504 085 00 707?

also, why did you need new headlight trims and finder liner extensions? what is a finder liner extension anyways? :)

I recently installed a turbo bumper on my C2. I didn't want that gap, so I searched for the parts used on the 40th anniversary. The part I found was called an air baffle/inlet, it surrounds the inside of the center grill and extends down to the mounting points of the body. The gap is completely gone with this part. The piece is quite large and qiute expensive but secures everything nicely.

Tha part number is:

p/n 996 504 085 00 707 It costs around 560 cdn wholesale or 700 retail.

I also bought these parts:

two headlight trim-996 505 741 02

-996 505 742 02

two finder liner extensions- 996 504 124 00

- 996 504 123 00

my 996 soft top is in need of some repairs. as you can see from pictures, the wire which runs on the very edge of the top snapped at the very bottom (only clip is left in place):

because of the wire not pulling on the side of the top, it does not end up sitting inside the grove properly:

it looks like i should be able to pull the old cable out and put a new one in. the questions are:

1. is this an easy DIY project? (looks like it)

2. i could not find how the wire is secured on the opposite end.

3. any special tools i might need?

I can't prove it was their fault but I've videoed them doing crappy maintenance on my car but, that's another story.

how did you videotape the dealer? i always wanted to put a small camera in my car to see what dealer does to it. which dealer do you go to anyways?

996.505.531.01 is the retaining strip (item 23 below) (this is the same on both a standard bumper and C4S/TT bumpers)

996.575.161.01 is the (under bumper) air duct (item 10 below)

i am about to do a turbo bumper retrofit on my 2003 C2 cab. i did a lot of research already. i bought the bumper primed on craigslist from a guy who ended up not using it since he upgraded to a 997. what i got from the guy was:

- bumper

- three grills

- bumper lip

i also got two parts which i can't seem to figure out what to do with. they are: 996 505 531 01 and 996 575 161 01

any ideas? loren? :) :) thanks in advance.

might be hard to drive with it on. also not sure what the laws around here are on driving with a car cover - i'll have to double check.

yes i know you mean when i am parked :) the thing is, at home and at work i park in the garage, so that is not an issue. i am more worried about shorter pit stops (food, shopping, etc.) which are usually under 30 minutes. and of course while driving during the day too...

To give you an idea of the trouble - the instructions are 7 pages in the service manual.

hmm ok. i thought i saw a zipper when i was installing a SmartTOP - i guess i was wrong.

Just tint it from the inside glass. Why need to be removed???? The glass is pretty small so tinting doesn't make that much sense unless you tint the sides too.

yeah doing side windows too. this heat is insane. definately need tint to cool car down.
