Hi all, I have a 1999 6sp manual Carrera 2, that has a 2007 3.8L S engine swap in it (I wasn't part of the swap). The engine starts, idles, and runs "fine", but there is a very obvious lack of power. If you're driving leisurely it's not real noticeable, but once you step on the accelerator at all, it bogs down and has just a slow gradual acceleration even under WOT. I got a look at the DME and it's still the original 996, so my best guess is that the differences in variocam vs. variocam plus (and the inability of the old DME to process the info) is whats holding it back. Feel free to disagree, as this is NOT my forte, and I'd love to learn more. If it is the DME/Variocam issue, I'd like to ask opinions on what you would do: 1. Get a 1999 3.4L engine, swap it back in and sell the 3.8L engine to recoup cost. 2. Get an updated 997 wiring harness and DME, and try to get the 3.8L running correctly. 3. I've read a couple posts that suggest you can run an RPM switch to the variocam plus wiring to activate/deactivate it at the proper RPM's, which might allow the 3.8L to run correctly with the 996 DME. Do you think that's actually a possibility? And if so, do you have any guesses on what tuning the old DME might cost with such a switch in place? Sorry in advance if any of this sounds dumb because I don't really know that much about these systems. Thanks for any input you can provide!
Thanks for the reply JFP! That’s my biggest concern. I had no part in the swap, so trying to figure out what they did might take some time 😉
Hello all, After much searching and not finding anything exactly like what I'm experiencing, I decided to reach out here. I have a unique 1999 Carrera 2, that has a 2007 Carrera S engine swap, 6sp manual. The car starts and idles fine, and if you were taking it out for a VERY leisurely drive, you might not even notice anything is wrong. It's driveable, and has no CEL or codes showing up on OBD or Durametric, but it has a very obvious lack of power/acceleration wit any type of spirited driving. The pedal is responsive for about the first 1/8th of the way down, but once you get above 2000 or so RPM there is a very slow, gradual acceleration even under wide open throttle (especially in 3rd through 6th). I started with some basic maintenance and cleaned the K&N air filter, cleaned the MAF, cleaned the throttle body, fresh oil change, and put techron in a tank of gas. I also put the pedal to the floor with the key turned on and the engine off, and the throttle opens completely, so the wire seems to be fine. Reading through the forums, the most similar issues I could find suggested possible : Throttle Position Sensor Camshaft Position Sensor Fuel Pump Fuel Pressure Regulator Plugs & Coils Most of those all came with a rough idle, hesitation or CEL, and I don't have any of those issues...So for now, I'm driving a cool looking car that would lose a 1/4 mile race to a ford fiesta. If anyone has experienced anything similar, or has a good suggestion on where to start, and how to check the sensors or fuel pump to try to narrow down the problem, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks!
