  1. Hi all,

I was working on my driver's side vent assembly today and i noticed a small cover that its existence made no sense to me (P/N 996 552 621 01 A03).

So i looked up the parts and saw that this is where the headlight levelling system (M605 build option) switch is. And then when I searched around I couldnt find anything on this - not even a photo of how the switch actually looks like.

    Has anyone have this option?

Then this made me wonder does my 2003 996TT with stock bi-Xeon lights have the headlight levelling system?

I was reading that one way to know if this system works is that when the car starts the Xieon lights go a "bit" up and then down.

    Is this true?

    Thanks guys!

  2. Hi all, I have different kind of problem. My rear spoiler will work absolutely fine (auto up/down and also from the button located in the central console, but no light will pop up in the instrument cluster. Also when I turn on the ignition all lights will come and except the light for the rear spoiler.

Thinking that I am dealing with "light bulbs" I removed the instrument panel (also changed the broken clock shaft) but I realised that we are dealing with very small LEDs... bummer.

Any body has any feedback on this?

  3. Just opened my cluster (2003 996TT) and it seems that the warning lights are all small LED. I guess I should stop here as it would be impossible to change those? I have to change my broken clock shaft anyways so I am happy I have gotten this far. Your kind attention on this would be appreciated as I have my cluster open in my living room!!! 🙂

Thanks guys for your replies. My engine has 196K on it and i am not sure if there is a "tune" on the DME.

How can I check if there is a DME on it? Can Porsche dealership "reprogram" the DME?

Also do you have any idea about the second question i had about the Oxygen Sensing?

I had Porsche reprogram my DME, which they guaranteed the car would return to stock performance. Well what a difference did that make to the car. The car is idling on lower RPM, "feels" less powerful on lower RPM, but at the same time it is much more smooth. Of course once you are above 3500 RPM the car is transformed! 🙂

I need to hook up the durametric tool and see what are now the ignition angle values!

  5. Hi all,

    I purchased and installed the new PCCM+ for the 996TT (P/N 996 642 59000).
After some issues with the sound, Porsche realised that they also needed to install a control unit (P/N 996 642 58000 - cost is about $140). Initially I did not second guessed it but then I saw the photo below which states that it is in the original package (it the second box from top left side).

Can any of you confirm that this control unit is installed? Especially for my European readers.

The two not illuminated ( N & O ) are for the air bags and roll over bar extension on cabriolet models.

If you pay attention to the photo I post below: 1 is the airbag (this one comes on and off right away - should be good I assume!), 2 is for the rear spoiler? It never comes on but I know the spoiler works great and 3 is for the cab (don’t have cab so should be OK to be off)

your photo maybe is from an older 996?

    mine is 2003 996TT

The Durametric system can see every value the DME sees, but it cannot create values that are not part of the DME's PID file.  As for spec values, or explanations of what those values mean, that is not Durametric's prevue; if you want to know what the car's specs are, or an explanation of the codes it reports,  you need either the factory OBD II manual for the car (about $2,000.00 when it was still in print, which it no longer is), or the vehicle's factory service manual (13 volumes, but also no longer in print, but available online with either a monthly or annual subscription of around $5,000.00, depending upon what you ask to see).  Your other choice to get everything you want, you can lease the current PIWIS III (lease only, not for sale), starting with an opening annual lease cost of $20,000.00.

"Speed cost money; how fast do you want to go?"

I guess I will be driving on the right lane! 🙂

  8. Hi all,

I have been using this tool for over a month now.

My general feeling is that its super outdated and for the amount they charge they need to have a more modern software/interface.

Also surprised its missing some key engine parameters, ie oil pressure and has no manual to explain some actual values, ie spec RPM!

Would love to hear your thoughts.

They may be the result of a DME "tune", common aftermarket tune factors are more timing and more boost.

Correction to my post above.  Your numbers look similar to this:

Automotive Electronics for BMW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, and Asian vehicles

Your 996 numbers are very close (appears to be for all 996s both NA and turbo, which makes sense I think):

Porsche 986/996 MAF & DME System Data

RPM  MAF (volts) Mass Flow Ignition Timing Load (ms) Pulse (ms)
    Idle 1.30 15 5.0 1.10 2.6
    1000 1.35 20 10 1.20 2.6
    2000 1.70 40 23 1.20 2.7
    3000 1.90 60 32 1.20 2.7
    4000 2.11 80 36 1.20 2.6

Thank you so much for sharing this. I will check the above parameters on my next Durametric check.

  11. Hi all,

Recently purchased a durametric tool and am having great time with data logging the engine info on my 2003 996 Turbo (stock).

A few question for your guys:

    1) My Ignition angle goes up to 40 when running the engine up to 4K RPM. Idle is about 6

From your experience does this sound normal?

    2) My Oxygen Sensing values for both banks is 1 all the times, except when I go in boost mode which then it pushes up to 5. So 1 for no boost and then 5 when we have a boost.

From your experience does this sound normal? Does this indicate that maybe there is a boost leak in the system? The max boost seems to be 0.6 - have not seen a 0.7, but then again never pushed the engine yet above 5K rpm.

    Thank you

  12. Hi all,

The Durametric tool shows that a country code of C40 on the "information" page of the Bosch Digital Motor Electronics Motronic 7.8.

Under the specifications of the car the code is C00 (Germany).

Any idea what does this mean?

  13. Mark - you were right! I felt brave this morning, took off the battery and cleaned up the cable and put it together again. The break proportioning and the key ignition faulty alerts went away, but still have the chassis error and a headlamp faulty message. The headlamp could be from a weak battery ( I have been using the battery a lot without driving the car).

Needless to say I will check all the connections on the driver's seat and the front passenger seat to see if anything else is loose. Also the back floor is wet - so wondering if there are any split wires there as well.

In my opinion you have absolutely found the source of your troubles. The symptoms were the same, and your picture may as well have been one I took myself. There were no wires in my harness that were left with an intentional dead ends, and I can even remember that particular wire being in a similar state. Mine had corroded away entirely just like the wires you are holding. I remember both times the wires terminated in a larger connection in my car, but mine is a 2004, so potentially different. Were these two lines the only two inside some tape that you have cleared away? If they were clearly the only two inside the tape - then most definitely, clean them up and reconnect them. I would be willing to bet that your systems will all come back up.

If you found them just like the image, naked and loose inside the bundle of wires, then I would be careful to search for their original near connection points. It is a little harder to see in your image, but behind your finger looks like a connection for a number of larger wires wrapped in electrical tape? I would inspect that too while you are in there.

Another thing: right behind your thumb on the left on the thinner of the two wires looks like more corrosion maybe? Watch out for that, you may reconnect everything perfectly but there may be more corrosion further up the line just waiting to cause more trouble. When I was doing mine I just felt the flexibility of the wire for any signs.

So, 100% I think you have the problem right there inbetween your fingers, just be careful that you reconnect them back the way they were originally, then afterward get the wheel wells off and clean out the drain points that tend to clog up and cause water to get into that area. Write me back if you want more info on that and good luck!

    Mark

Thank you so much Mark! I will take photos of the other wires as well and post them here. There is no rush to fix it and just want to do the right thing. Knowing me, in the end I will just take the car to the Porsche dealer to take care of it (as I always do!), but at least it will save me a $$$ to point them in the right direction.

  15. Hi Papagut, thank you so much for your hard work and research. I have exactly the same issues on my Cayenne S 2008 car.

Lots of water in the front and back of the car and getting all the same fault messages.

Unfortunately my case starts about 100miles away from home, so I had to manually override the P on the gearbox and drove the distance in about 5.5 hours.

I confirm that the car drives in 1st/2nd gear, with all the GPS off and the parking assistance off. My headlights works and I believe also the break lights.

After cleaning all the water from the matts and the carpet and the bottom of the car, I am now trying to investigate what is wrong. The first thing I checked was the corrosion of the split wires. I have only looked so far the driver's side and from the 3 splits I found 1 cable (the brown one) like in the photo below. There is no copper at all the two wires not even touching each other. Is it possible that the copper completely eroded and disappeared? OMG how is it possible that Porsche knows about this and they do not make a freaking recall? Poor engineering and definitely poor assembly work by the engineers.

Anyways - my question is should I clean up the cable and make a new connection of the brown cable? Is it possible that they were never connected and just sitting there in the black electrical tape?

    Thank you for your help!
